What is the title of this song? I have Wendy Carlos' original score soundtrack and the the main theme I have is called 'Colorado' and but where did this come from? Still it's a nice piece.
This is great and its weird when you are used to the dark original bassy music. Its not as scary with this music here. The helicopter shadow on the mountain is gone too - must be cut off. Nice resolution on the vid though, better than most of the clips of this scene on YT. Thanks!
Stanley Kubrik originally comissioned Wendy Carlos to do the soundtrack for "The Shining", but he later decided to use various other pieces by different classical composers. He ended up using only 2 of Carlos's songs in the final movie. One of her peices was mixed into the background of the "Symphonie Fantastique" for the opening credits.
Her original score is now available on the CD's "Rediscovering Lost Scores: Vol-1 & 2" by Wendy Carlos. She also did the score for "A CLockwork Orange."
It was shot 1.37:1 but always meant to be projected at the standard 1.85:1 ratio. That's the way it was screened in theatres. The reason Kubrick shot it fullscreen was so that it wouldn't have to be pan and scanned for television. Anyway, the movie looks gorgeous in widescreen.
Good job. Comments: Beginning comes in well. Less piano, it makes it seem likes it's a new horror film. Pace is good but could be slightly slower to fit the action. Melt the screaming sound around 1:20 into different shapes and that could really help. I like your ending as well, it really finishes off the sequence using the brass instruments. I think if you add a few more natural sounds and melt them into different meanings it could really help, lending from electroacoustic tendencies. Good work
Movietrax, I am in the process of filming a screenplay re-adaptation of "The Shining." May I have permission to use this piece for my "Closing Day" sequence? You would receive recognition and referral in the credits.
Why would you want to change the opening score for The Shining?!? Kubrick masterfully adapted Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique into one of the best opening scores in cinema history. The music totally sets you up for what's about to come.
100% agreed, as you should know if you would have read the info to this clip. That would have made this comment obsolete. As a matter of fact, many people write comments without ever reading the infos about the clips. But thanks for careing anyway! Kubrick is definitely one of the best directors to know about the importance of the use of music.
Thank you very much for your reply. So far everything is moving along quite slowly. Just had a meeting with the staff at the facility we'll be using to shoot it. For scenic footage I chose the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado. I was looking for something with a Native American feel. As we know Indian chanting was present in the original movies soundtrack. My screenplay deals more with the Natives. I was thinking to implement my own vocals on an already composed piece whatever it is.
@nostromo74 Indeed the original music is quoted from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. However, Berlioz didn't compose this theme; he quoted it himself from a musical work that existed way before him: it's a part of the Dies Irae of probably the most well-known Missa Pro Defunctis written for gregorian chant. But I agree that it is beautiful music and that it has been masterfully adapted.

When I can say something to the Picture...
The Widescreen Version is Crap! The Movie was shot in Fullscreen (1.33:1)! And only and Really ONLY in this Format the Film has his Power!!!

sound more like an intro to another instalment of Resident Evil (the video game), especially with the soft piano playing

the music kubrick chose is much more ominous and thus a better fit

Was this the original choice for the Shining opening credits before Stanley Kubrick said he wanted more classical?

your music has a slight Mark Snow atmosphere, which I really like!

What's the name of this music please?
KThompson1990 4 years ago
No, it can't compare to the original that so perfectly matches these tracking shots.
Your music isn't bad per se, it just needed to be more darkly haunting to fit this shot.
