I came here because of a search for Dr. Pepper and thought I'd comment. Over the past 15 years I've had 12 roommates (mostly grad students staying temporarily). Out of all of them, only two ever brought watermelon in the house. One, almost every week. They were my only two black roommates. I grew up in compton, riverside, and 3 years in minnesota for high school. Mostly blacks, mostly mexicans, and mostly wight's. Only saw watermelon twice in riverside, never in Minnesota, and 2 or more times..

I came here because of a search for Dr. Pepper and thought I'd comment. Over the past 15 years I've had 12 roommates (mostly grad students staying temporarily). Out of all of them, only two ever brought watermelon in the house. One, almost every week. They were my only two black roommates. I grew up in compton, riverside, and 3 years in minnesota for high school. Mostly blacks, mostly mexicans, and mostly wight's. Only saw watermelon twice in riverside, never in Minnesota, and 2 or more times..

I wonder how many icons and images have to be socially outlawed before people would get the picture that you can't ban things because of a negative connotation one person or a group may have.
I can think of few things that aren't stereotypical of black people.

Stereotypes are not racist. FALSE stereotypes are racist. This is a true stereotype, therefore NOT racist. Black people like watermelon just like white people. White kid was on the can also! If I take a picture of a black kid eating watermelon in the park is that racist, of just if a draw a picture of it? I like watermellon and i'm not black, but i don't know a single black person who doesn't like watermaellon. in fact why do black people like watermellon so much? i like watermellon soda and grape soda, but i'm the only non black person i know who likes it.
i wouldn't get offended if companies put my face on my favorite products. unless it was false like a dildo or something. black black people love fried chicken and grape drink and watermellon soda. why even hide it?

The further we get away from the past historical events that defined these images each generation becomes more and more disconnected from the past reality. We see it with the use of the "N" word which traditionally was a line drawn in the sand and when someone crosssed it we knew that they had no respect for us.
