Passionate and moving. I do enjoy her more with just her voice and guitar accompaniment. She is so intimate in the best sense of the word when she performs thusly. In my humble opinion...
It is sweet, redskydc3, that you read to people with head injuries but you shouldn't take their opinions too seriously until they are better. And, if by "great vocals ", you refer to blinking wet ear pups picked for their passable talent & marketable inoffensiveness or the warblers who genuinely can wobble out a note for 60 seconds then these exponents of musical porridge need such gargantuan notes to pad out vacuous efforts that have nothing to say.
Her performances generally have very little emotion or affect. Not a criticism; just the way she plays. But here, she's really seems to be feeling a lot playing this song. Very nice.
Today is the 4th of July, I had to hear this. Aimee Mann has more talent and class in her socks than Gaga will ever know. She also is almost old enough to be Gaga's grandmother, but certainly doesn't look it. Let's see how Gaga looks at 50, if she makes it that long.
"So that's today's memory lane With all the pathos and pain Another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless And they're always the same A verse, then a verse, and refrain"
Today IS the 4th of July. Another (very hot) june has gone by. I can't beleive this is the last July of this decade....where has it all gone!?
But now here I am, and the world HAS gotten colder. :'-(
She is such a great song writer, her lyrics have so many different levels of meaning and possible interpretations. Unique. Moving. Timeless. Thank you Aimee :-)
I just watched Aimees "christmas carol" (very funny by the way) and thought of this song. Glad its been posted, she has to be one of the best female song writers i've ever heard. The one thing that bothers me is how many (ignorant) people comment on how horrible her voice is. We live in a world where "great vocals" come from american idol radio. Aimee has always made me think of a female version of Bruce Springsteen she uses every bit of range nature gave her and conveys her thoughts perfectly
@redskydc3 i have only heard this song by her but i think she sings good, she trys hard and it doesnt come across as obnoxious like lady gaga's bad romance.
I met Aimee on August 1, 1981 at her workplace, Newbury Comics in Boston Ma, when at the time she was in a band called "The Young Snakes" a very tready art like act. I was beginning to become a band agent she was looking to book a venue at the Living Room, which was a popular Night club in Providence, RI. She gave me a demo tape of her band, which I still have. Oh yeah, the got the gig " a $150 opening act! LOL She had the most amazing eyes I have ever seen and such a womanly way about her. :)
My very favourite Aimee Mann song. So simple, yet the lyrics pack punches, "What a waste of gunpowder and sky" "Reverse, and reverse, and refrain" (so much like life itself). Her vocals are great in this performance, too.
"When they light up our town, i always think what a waste of gunpowder and sky" God, i love her songwriting! such an amazing talent. and this song was from Whatever, Aimee Mann's debut album - what an auspicious start! brilliant stuff...
Very good! I only heard a few tracks today and Im hooked already! If you like her maybe you guys should try John Martyn. In particular the solid air album! thanx for the vid mann fan!!!!!!!!
dude someones IS playing fucking bass in the back right?!! cause if not i dunno how the fuck she made it sound like she was playing bass over herself, and from her hands it doesnt' look like she's playing the bass notes in some unfathomable jimi-hendrix way
One thing you notice on you-tube is who has talent and who doesn't. How many "live" videos of bands and singers have you seen here that expose the actual low quality of their talent. Their records sound so great on the "produced" CD but they sound like shit without all the electronic processing. Aimee Mann is the real frickin' deal.....a microphone, a guitar, and a song.....no where to hide....only REAL talent passes that test.
How to write a song so beautiful it hurts? Poetry wrapped in musical simplicity. Amazing...How many times can you write a song like that. Only a truly great songwriter can do this again and again and again...<3 <3 <3
what can one day about beauty
