  • DrJ, would have destroyed the NBA if he spent his years from the ABA in the NBA.

  • Than dont take the 20 sec timeout!

  • Meanwhile in Lebrons life...

  • what a true class act and a real champion us sixer fans thank you dr j for making this a proud franchise that will one day be on top again

  • hearing that zinkoff intro brought good memories back.......

  • Dr. J has got to be the sexiest 60 year old man on the planet.

  • Nikita

April 21, 2011 8:29:39 pm You are not old enough to play here

  • @scott620forlife its wrong

  • great post, wonderful to hear the intro from Dave Zinkoff of Dr. J. at 1:10 or so.

  • if only they brought big shot back, he woulda mopped the floor with hip hop

  • Dr. J was a one of a kind player. One of the truly great players in any sport.

  • Errrrrrving! Man, I feel lucky to have seen this legend play. The Spectrum should have been saved, case closed!

  • I've never visited Philadelphia but I've met quite a few from that great city and they all know their sports and positively love their teams. Though I can understand wanting or perhaps even needing a new arena tearing down the Spectrum is unthinkable. Maybe I'm being a little bit too sentimental but destroying the Spectrum essentially amounts to throwing away a museum piece. My heart-felt sympathy to the great sports fans of Philadelphia.

  • Id rather knock down the center than the spectrum, FLYERS WON back to back stanley cups in the spectrum NOT the center.... THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE WITH ME!!! KEEP THE MEMORIES!!

  • I went to many-a concert & sporting event here. Miss the ol' girl.

  • i'm from philly (still live here) & i feel that the spectrum SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DEMOLISHED, it should of been structurally renovated & turned n2 a philadelphia landmark, a sports history museum - there were just 2 many great memories here, the sixers, flyers, big 5 games, wwf wrestling, concerts & who could 4get that historic duke-kentucky game during the 1992 ncaa tournament (which is widely recognized as the greatest BASKETBALL GAME college or pro - ever) , it shouldn't have been demolished

  • @costcordero2 I totally agree with your post costcordero...great points...I will miss The Spectrum also.

  • @costcordero2 i hear u man, makes u sad like when they tore down the vet

  • Now all we're left with is 3 corporate whorehouses in Philly...all hail Lincoln Financial...Citizens Bank...Wachovia,,,no, wait...Wells Fargo...come one, come all and plop your 800$ down for a family of four and you too can watch watered-down professional sports while being inundated with corporate advertising! And don't forget to wear your over-priced officially licensed fan gear to the game that was made in some third-world country by a kid making 25 cents a day! Long live the Spectrum....

  • @garystraits

Sad, but true. What used to be more about the sport has become another corporate venture. Nike, for one, DOES pay impoverished countries pennies to have their out of school children make their corporate fodder. Where are the Wiz Kids!

  • The only thing wrong, with the last few days of the Spectrum, is when you go by it..there's a big "Wachovia" sign splattered on the outside.

And it's hard for the "Doc" to consider himself the best..when he played for a franchise that once had Wilt Chamberlain.

  • doc had the best series in history in the 76 ABA finals against Denver, who were as good as any team Jordan played against.. 37 pts,14 rbs, 4 sts, 2 blks. Know yer role!

  • Epic reverse layup

  • you're a prick

  • This is ridiculous. WHy don't they just knock down The Palestra to build a Taco Bell while they are at it.

  • They're knocking down arena's all over the place. The only thing I will say is that if Yankee's stadium can die and the Reunion arena which to me is still kinda young can die. Then unfortunately the Spectrum must die one day as well. I just wish it wasn't today.

  • julius dr erviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing the best from spain canary island

  • Nuggets were my team in the Doctor's era, but those Sixers were easy to like. Dr. J was and is all class.

  • I was at that first game for Dr J against San Antonio. During the introductions, they dimmed the house lights and the scoreboard asked "IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?" The roar was deafening. Then the Zink intrduced Doc for the first time..."EEEEEEEEEEERVING!". It was all surreal.. that legendary afro...the black and silver uniforms of the renegade Spurs..Kenon..Gervin..Paultz. I will miss that building when it's gone.

  • Doctor J "The Greatest ever". Jordan, Bird, Russell and Magic would be the others on my starting five for all time.

  • THE SPECTRUM!!!

The team of America the SIXERS!!!

  • pitty the worlds sees philly as killadelphia now:(

  • am a big philadelphia fan i luv the sixers & eagles phillies flyers they will always be my teams.

  • Thank you so much for posting. I grew up watching the Sixers in Colorado. I feel in love w. ith Doc the first I saw him in the ABA play against the nuggets. He was my idol from then on. he is truly the classiest person in all of sports and I still miss him to this day.

  • My favorite player of all time. I still remember him saying, "Don't call me 'Dr. J,' call me 'Dr. Chapstick!'"

  • u rekon he could still pull off a dunk?

  • Philadelphia Freedom! Shine on me...I love ya-Shine that light

  • The best part was when public address announcer Dave Zinkof would announce Julius Errrrrrving.

  • do you know the rap song from the 80s where Dave says his name

  • Basketball by Curtis Blow

  • What song play 3min 05s please? this song lyric and all-right my new clip ;]

  • This little clip shows what a great man Julius Erving is. You don't see that kind of humbleness in players anymore.

  • so epic and makes you wonder, what memories will you have when you are older? Flashbacks? Dreams?

  • secerets?

  • god bless nba

  • I wish this was an entire documentary. This is extremely interesting.

  • Connie Hawkins was the original high flyer who was blacklisted but eventually made it to the NBA. Erving gets his game from studying "The Hawk". He got that nickname by swooping in and dunking on people. Hawkins was like an F4...Erving was an F-15 and Jordan was like a stealth bomber. Each generation improves on what the latter did. The NBA was in trouble in the 70's and the ABA merger with Dr.J helped make it what it has become today. No Erving? The NBA would have broken up into a lesser league

  • @ethurst2 ... connie hawkins WAS NOT the original high-flyer, elgin baylor was, connie was quoted saying this himself ... elgin was 1st, connie was 2nd, julius 3rd - the holy trinity of basketball artistry at the small 4ward spot ... yoda, obi-wan & annakin ... michael jordan is luke ... LOL

  • @ethurst2 and blake griffen is a rolling thunder, cuz he comes and slams so firecly, people shit them selves

  • Dr. J

Only man that could EVER compare to Jordan.

  • True to that.

  • Athletic ability, yes. But Dr. J was even bigger off the court than he was on the court and on the court he was GIGANTIC! He did a lot of charity work and promoted the NBA. That is why he still commands so much respect. Jordan has respect on the court but no where near as much off the court; no comparison to Dr. J. And biggest of all; DR J's legend is still growing; Jordans is fading. Dr. J is still IT!

  • @Dbusdriver71 Why are you comparing Erving and Jordan? Dr. J was great but he was no Jordan...be real. Is that really the point though? Does he have to be as good as Jordan? The Sixers have had so few classy, decent players---can't you just be happy Doc played here without insisting he's the best ever?

  • @altohart Its been a long time since you posted; I got distracted. I never said Dr. J is the greatest; it still chamberlain. Dr. J is the complete sportsman. Jordan is very overreated in spite of rings.

  • Mr. integrity and Mr. class; help keep the nba alive while it escaped the 70's to the Golden 80's. As someone who watched the lakers since the 72 season, I wasn't happy in 83 but I can say now he deserved a ring, one of the few that can actually make that claim. As sensational as Maravich was he couldn't claim that, Dr. J can. God bless you Dr. J.

  • agree 100%

  • Brings tears to my eyes. I grew up in Philly and I spent many, many nights at the Spectrum with my grandfather and/or my uncle watching Dr. J at his peak. I remember once seeing Julius and "The Ice Man", George Gervin, go head-up one night. I think it was in 1980 or '81. Julius finished the game with like, 46, and Gervin finished with like, 40. What a night. Julius Erving, when I was a kid, was the undisputed G.O.A.T.

  • Class on the court anfdoff. More of today's players should take a page from Mr. Erving. He could have been cocky about his talents...but instead he always demonstrated how humble he was and grateful for his talents and respect for his fans.

  • Julius The Best!!!

  • Whats the music from 1:00 - 1:36...?

  • Dr J was a GREAT player and even a GREATER gentleman.

    What a world class act.

  • What a classy guy. Always loved Dr. J's attitude and devotion to the game.

  • man i used 2 go there allll da time ima miss it!!

  • even though i've never been there before, i can feel the history and its really sad that its going to be torn down

  • Grace you got ice cream all over the luge track

  • my mom and dad met him at a hotel in ireland and all they did was sing and dance and play guitar all night they say he is one of the nicest people they have ever met

  • i love the haunting theme that plays at the beginning of the vid.

  • Yeah,i wanna make an hip hop instrumental with this, soo good ^^ Like all this vid

  • wow!

he got joe bryant(kobe's dad) as his teammate!

    i nvr knew that!

    haha

  • why are they always tearing down and building arenas. i live in charlotte and tore down the hornets arena and built the bobcats arena that sits less people.

    weird

  • becuz of the sponsers

  • i would prob cry if i was dr J

  • pretty sad ending...

  • The Spectrum being knocked Down ! ??

  • whats happening to the Spectrum?

  • 4:17 still one of the most amazing plays of all time!

  • i realy miss him

  • Sad to see...

  • 59 yrs. old

  • how old is Julius? Please educate me.

  • 59 yrs. old

  • they tearin it down cus we couldnt keep up funds now we play in tha same place as tha Flyers do i believe

  • My Fav Player of all time and the best....

  • This was stupid. Someone should be fired over this.

  • why was it stupid?

  • why??

  • why is it getting torn down???

  • he could palm a basketball when he was in sixth grade

  • he is the reason my number for b-ball is six

  • Yeah, why do we have to always say who is the best? Doc was MVP in his time and one of the best of all time. Just enjoy the players and the game because they go so very quick. It seems just yesterday I was in high school cheering for Doc and the Sixers against the hated Celtics. Now,I look back and miss those times. Miss MJ(both MJ's..Magic and Mike)..enjoy Kobe while he is around...before you know it he will be just like Doc is now..a wonderful memory.

  • The Doc was a bad man no doubt. He didnt quite have the jumpshot of a Kobe or MJ but he could soar. The guy all of us kids of the 70's wanted to grow up to be.

  • ? bjacobsdabest, ...?

What about Oscar Robertson, or Wilt Chamberlain? And if u think LeBron is better than Kobe (i agree slightly) then why did you put him BEHIND Kobe?

Not trying to hate at all, just checking. ;)

  • LeBron shouldnt be up there. poor jump shot still most the accolades he gets right now is just hype via ESPN.

  • why cant the sixers play on the spectrum?

  • Dr. J had one of the best, if not the greatest, athletic ability in NBA history. the only players i can think of that was that athletic is either MJ in his early days, or Lebron James (seriously a 6'8 260 lbs dude that can out speed most point guards...). sure vince carter or dwight howard are super freaks. they dont have the grace in the air that Dr. J and Michael Jordan had. I think some of the lay-ups that Mj and Dr.J did in GAMES is better than most dunks in a dunk comp these days.

  • dont forget dominique wilkins and dwayne wade.

  • yeah true. i wouldnt put dwayne wade the most athletic tho. dont get me wrong, he's a smart player who has great vision. like i see dwayne wade more like a pistol pete. marovich wasnt the highest jumper or quickest guy, but just the way he controlled the ball and his bball IQ was simply amazing. wade is same deal. sure he can jump and is fast but he's not a freak athlete like the ones i named above. he is a great ball player that can put the ball in the hoop any means neccesary.

  • my initials are dr.j

  • why are they tearin it down??

  • i believe in a few months. well thats when they'll start. ima try to be there when it happens.

  • what will happen to the spectrum?

  • The Spectrum is the Old Trafford of basketball.

  • no msg is the old trafford of basketball

  • NICE!

  • wats happening to the spectrum?

  • its gettin torn down.

  • No need for these MJ vs Dr. J comments...and besides, the best dunker is Vince Carter.

Dr. J pioneered many of the moves that you see today. No matter who's better at those moves now, you can't take that away from him.

  • Have you ever seen Carter dunk backwards in a crowd of 4 people UNDER the hoop? No!

Dr.J's best highlights are in the ABA. By the time he got to the NBA, he really turned down the volume on his high flying act. He was doing stuff that Jordan, Wilkins and Carter still can't do today. Erving put the team before his skills and still came out smelling like a rose. Ervings' influence was Connie Hawkins the original high flyer. Erving like Jordan, took above the rim to another level.

  • Jordan retired.... Wilkins durrr...

You said stuff they still can't do today...

  • dr.J was jordan's mentor basically. at jordan's dunk contest on the last dunk he look over at dr.j and he just nodded basically saying do the freethrow line dunk. w/o the doctor jordan would have never done the freethrow line dunk. i love dr. j but jordan is a better player overall but dr.j is a better dunker. respects 2 julius "Dr. J" erving and Michael Jordan.

  • you really don´t know what you talking it´s right that mj was better that dr. j BUT dr. j was a better dunker as mj because dr. j invented more dunks as mj and his dunks are very popular for example the freethrowlinedunk

  • Dr. J, the best dunker in the world. Better than MJ. Better than Vince Carter, plainly THE best. My dad played ping pong with him in Philadelphia. at my dad's college (st Josephs) The sixers were practicing there, Dr. J came over and asked to play with my dad and uncle. I wish i were there... Dr. J IS THE BEST!!!! MJ was a better shooter nd player BUT not dunker. Dr. J, were amazing happened.

  • lol. dr j is a legendary dunker, not to disrespect the man, but michael jordan is a better dunker than dr. j, don't get me wrong he is a great athlete but michael jordan was the best. i hope this did not offend anyone, this is my opinion.

  • But with out Dr. J there would be no Michale Jordan...

  • where you think MJ got the shit for??

with out Dr. J there would be no Michael Jordan, dominique wilkins,or kobe

your opinion is disrespect and offinsive to us old MR.ERVING fans

  • I agree with except for MJ, MJ was and will be the best of the best.

  • ok let me put it like this:

Michael Jordan is the g.o.a.t of dunking, but julius erving is like the poineer of dunking. julius basically brought dunking into the nba but michael jordan elevated it to new heights. G.o.a.t=Greatest of all time.

  • not!!

  • RIP Spectrum

  • How long has it been since the last time a match was played in the Spectrum?

  • not that long ago...bulls played the sixers..

  • how does a person w/ the name MJmike not know who Julius "Dr.J" Erving is?.....please explain

  • maybe he only knows MJ:) but it's still wierd though

  • wow you dont know Dr J??? thats culture man, the first guy that dunked from the free throw line, the guy that inspired MJ, a terrific scorer and one of the greatest players ever. you should see some of his videos in youtube at least

  • you don't know Julius Erving?

  • how can you demolish something so beautiful

  • i think that too

  • (5)*

  • great video

  • why do they have to demolish it?

  • A lot of great things happened there. It is a shame it is getting demolished.

  • Awesome Piece.. Thanks for sharing!

  • even the janitor buffing the hardwood has pretty nice shoes

  • Spectrum is being demolished

  • whats happening to the spectrum ? O.o

  • is he going to die? whats special about this?just asking

  • Spectrum is going.

  • the spectrum is a legandary areana...and because of repairs and what not they decided to rebuild...Wilt Chamberlain also had his famous double triple double in that areana...25 points 22 rebounds 21 assists

  • i want Spectrum arena to live!! not to be demolished :(

  • yea its true im from philly they destroy ing the spectrum wat a shame

  • i love that shot

  • eh, i didnt know he played with kobe's dad... wow, interesting

  • hahaha i heard joe bryant lol kobe's dad.

  • isn't Erving Jordans Fav Player?and he was mines too...

  • Where amazing happened.

  • def not aprils fools day prank, the sixers already played their last game in it

  • it could be fake...cause it was set on april fool's day... nah i believe it, dont demolish!

  • looks like a very decent arena

  • julius erving is my favorite player. :]

  • what will happen on this arena? demolished???

  • "Dr J" Julius Erving we love you (No homo) =]

  • no! no no no. why must historical buildings be torn down? goddamn it why. The Spectrum will be missed.

  • I understand and also share your point. BUT, if you watch the whole video (as I know you did), you can see how messed up it is (e.g 2:09/10) - the maintenance would be a HUGE job. The 76ers don't even play there anymore. So unless they could get the government to make it a heritage site and get tours going in it, besides the history of it, its useless.

  • (snipingcheese) wow you never know ALL sides of an argument until you hear other people speak. its true what you said too. they can tear down the building but not the memories.

  • I can't help to argue the point that if they would have KEPT UP with the maintenance, there would have been no need to move in the first place. The powers that be *left it go*, they wanted a new arena just like every other city did. :(

  • Yeah I totally agree. The powers that be never cared for the Spectrum the way New York cares for MSG. I/m a very spoiled person and I enjoy comfort. But I like the Spectrum. I would want to keep the Spectrum even if they totally redid it. And they should have. Over time they should have kept up with it. But Philly has never cared for it's history the way it should.

  • great video =]

  • wow he remembers a lot.

  • awesome

  • they should put a statue of him on top of the building like if hes flying with a dunk

  • God Bless Julius Erving! Loved this video! ;)

  • A True Inspiration for today's youth

  • Are the Sixers moving to a new arena??

  • They already have a new arena. The Spectrum was the Sixers former arena.

  • Aww, that sucks.

So MSG is the last standing historical basketball arena around huh?

  • the forum

  • The 76ers now play at Wochovia Center since 1996. Erving played in the Spectrum and the it will be closed in September

  • The Forum is still standing.

  • goodbye spectrum :(

  • What an excellent video, Mr. Erving was truly a class act.

  • I wonder if they're gonna put a Dr J statue outside the new building

  • 250th view 15 rating and GREAT VID AND 16TH COMMENT
