My friend always rants to people shes just met about how, she got a modelling job, how much she misses modelling, she's around the height of 5"4, and lets be fair, not exactly the "model criteria" in terms of looks. The best part is, she paid to have all her hair done, all her makeup done, all the clothes and even to get the photoshoot done. She did one day of a 2 hour photoshoot that she paid for.

If you know you don't fit the criteria to be a model and a "modeling agency" contacts you...don't think that you're going to be the exception. Recently my friend who is 5'4'' announced that she signed up for a talent search company and actually believes she is going to be a model. There is also a 12 year old who is friends with me on Facebook who "models" but she never gets gigs and is just part of a photo mill. She is way too short, busty, and not pretty enough. Clearly she is being scammed.

Oh man! The same thing happened to me! I was offered a professional photo shoot in London (I live in north Scotland) with hair styled and make-up done for free, on the condition that I make my own way there and pay for my own accommodation. And I thought "Great! That sounds like an amazing opportunity!"

But then I felt suspicious. So I looked through the whole website, and there was no guarantee that the photo shoot was free or that I would get my photos in a professional portfolio at the end of it. In the end, I decided to avoid their hundreds of phone-calls and emails reminding me of the photo shoot and asking me to come to London. I am so glad now that I decided not to go for it - it's such an awful scam.

I don't know about the UK but here in North America these 'modeling opportunities" are often fronts for the beauty pageant circuit. When my wife was 17 she was "scouted" on the street. Although she had a contract with a reputable agency she was coming up for renewal and figured that it wouldn't hurt to shop around. She ended up having to take this store front operation to court to sue them for using her image to advertise their pageants when she didn't sign a model release.
