  • very nice studioscratches....great tutorial. subed n scribed. ;)

  • will either of those faders fit my model 05 pro?

  • @vdoscanr yeh should be fine!

  • once again studioscraches i need your advice......i have had my vestax 05pro since 98, now i have never changed the fader, i have the c-f mode all the way to bleed, now i noticed the fader comes to about 4/16 of an inch before the sound comes out all the way at an even level.....i have been scracthing oldschoolstyle for as long as i have had this mixer , i do have to clean the fader cuz i will get some bleed through from time to time. once i clean it it goes away .

    ..should i change the fader?

  • @vdoscanr you can keep on cleaning it as long as its ok for you! you could put a different fader in it like the pro x fade or the innofader. its up to you!

  • i have the vestax 05 pro qbert edition got it waaaay back in 97.....i barely started to practice the crab today...how do you set the volume ....the sound comes out a little low....lower the bass and turn up volume (not all the way up)on the channel right....

  • @vdoscanr try turning up the gain and turn the bass down on the scratch record so you don't get the hand touching the record picking up on that.

  • how did they chrome out the decks.....i have always wanted mines to be like that

  • @vdoscanr chrome faceplates, just google it they should come up

  • Kinda hard to do this on the optical fader on the numark pro sm3 (old mixer i know) since the Xfader offset is kinda wierd. I had to cut an old credit card in half, and tape it to the bottom of my faceplate on the mixer to get rid of the offset. For some reason it's easier to do the fader movements left handed when i'm right handed.

  • @TheWaynelds yeh its good to get a mixer with a fader that can handle scratching. I use the TTM57sl now, its a dream. Scratch with whichever hand feels best to you.

  • @studioscratches It can handle scratching. It's got the optical fader with the ball bearings and laser sensor. The xfader is pretty slick. but even with the Xfader curve is set to sharp, there's still a few millimeter offset from quiet to full volume.

I've been practicing more with my left hand cutting lately. It's akward as hell, but coming along nicely, and almost as good as the right.

  • I have fat hands which makes it hard for me to do this! So, i use a moisturiser to help me slide my fingers across the fader. i have been on and off the deck for 20 years.

old habits die hard! so try switching hands and plenty of practice!!!!

    Great vids

  • I've been scratching for years and still havent got this down. It looks like you have the fader going in a different direction. Do you have the fader in reverse, if so why? I've seen other deejays reverse the fader to crab scratch.

  • @PRODUCERSANDDEEJAYS its a preference of mine to have the fader reversed / hamster style. the key to this scratch is practice. took me a while.

  • @3fthighandrising its all practice. thumb needs to be relaxed. keep practising you will get it!

  • I just don't understand why people try to teach scratching. Scratching is all about improvising and creating your own style, not mixing togheter techniques created by other people.

  • @OverTimeeeee I teach the basic techniques to get you started then it is up to you to make them your own. Techniques and style are 2 very different things. I do not claim to teach style. If what I do is not useful to you thats ok!

  • I found the chirp, one click flare, and the transformer scratch by just stabbing at the record, but the dexterity in my right hand lets me do sharp crabs but they arent nearly as fast as yours. Mine are very clear and cut, but just not quite as fast. Any ideas for tips?

  • @S13Sldewayz just practice loads!

  • @DJDVUS1 hello. use your thumb to keep the fader closed then the 3 /4 fingers to push it in and open the fader. its all about the thumb keeping it shut regular style crabs. hope that helps.

  • Your right hand makes me think you'd be a great flamenco guitarist if you tried.

  • I'm curious, are you left handed or do you choose to scratch with your left hand and move the crossfader with your right for another reason?

  • @DrMatt7 im right handed and thats just what felt best for me. choose whichever feels good for you!

  • how much of a role do needles play cuz i got the crab scrath down pact and i just got that same mixer u have and the cuts r soo sharp. but these shitty stanton needles i got stil lskip and it dosent sound that good like urs do. but i feel like im doing it right and i practice in my lab 3 to 4 hours a day. doode i need those shure needles or what shoul i get

  • @mug04life shures are really good. what tables do you have? watch my video on how to set up your needles / tonearm for more help

  • There is no doubting your scratching skills but these are more demonstartions than tutorials. You really wanna break down the movements more.

    Keep them coming!

  • @tonyspinningg thanks, great idea to go more indepth which i will do

  • for me this more a demonstration then a tutorial. but it's pretty cool!

  • @VJbasti thanks. i could break down the finger movements some more i think.

  • holy cow this is cramping my fingers. practiceeeeee!!!

  • @sirshaunathan it does get easier with practice!

  • @studioscratches thanks, but i think i'm just a righty, can't execute well with my left hand. and I have a question: is it possible to crab with your fader set to normal?

  • @sirshaunathan absolutely you can scratch with your left or right hand, reverse or normal. In normal mode your fingers just tap to cut the sound in.

  • @studioscratches thank you studioscratches/dj short-e!!

  • @sirshaunathan ANYTIME!

  • I don't have a hamster switch? am I buggered? :(

    DJM 600

  • @akingscott no you could plug the left table into the right channel and vice versa. or just take the principles and scratch regular

  • its like faster version of the transformers

  • some shiny technics there

  • taking the easy way out with the reversed cross fader none the less, very clean crabs. nice job

  • Cool :) does it need a special modification ? Thanks

  • @FlashMcEdown nah scratch mixers have a reverse / hamster switch to change it to that setting!

  • @studioscratches my cross fader on my mixer is really small would i have to get a mixer with a bigger crossfader?

  • @kingkevboi67 you need a mixer with a decent crossfader such as vestax, rane, stanton. Innofader or pro x fader. hope that helps!

  • @kingkevboi67 thanks for the info do u have a job as a dj

    u everenter a dj competion

  • @kingkevboi67 no competitions for me. I run the Studio Scratches website and make videos for here, thats my scratch job!

  • I don't understand why is your crossfader in the wrong way, is it done on purpose ?

  • @FlashMcEdown yeh its called reverse or hamster style.

  • I have got the finger motion right but im struggling to use the thumb as a 'spring', I think my crossfader might be too stiff which is making me use too much force.

Should the whole hand motion be gentle or should it be quite forceful?

  • @juzzy7291 what setup have you got?

  • @juzzy7291 it could be that the fader is too stiff. You kinda gotta be relaxed with the whole hand yet firm with the thumb. experiment and you will get it! walk around practicing without the fader! Thats what I used to do!

  • @studioscratches yeah I have been practicing the motion. i think its really down to the crossfader, I checked on my friends and his is alot easier to move so i might try and replace that and hopefully that should sort it out. thanks for your help :)

  • @juzzy7291 i had the same issue when i started. As soon as i got my vestax 06 with a decent fader i nailed it! Happy scratching! - Short-E

  • is there a way to set up a cross fader?

  • @runnermike25 depends on the mixer - sometimes there is a curve adjustment which you need to be a tight cut in, some crossfaders have adjustable tension like innofader / pro x fader.

  • i can only do this with beatbox :(

  • how the hell are you doing this? ive been trying to do this scratch for too damn long, every time i do it the scratch sounds like 3 extremely rapid choppy scratches (i cant explain it) . is there a difference between cross faders or what? cuz i have the numark mixtrack and its plastic not metal

  • @madmoocows hey! its probably related to the crossfader. The crossfader I am using here is designed specifically for scratching. it has a very sharp cut in. Post a video and i will take a look at what you are doing. Please also visit the studio scratches website and sign up for notification of my how to scratch course as it will explain everything you need in way more detail. Thanks! - Short-E

  • Hey Shorte when I do my crab scratch I can move all 4 fingers in a great consistant way but when I actually do it on vinyl it doesn't really come out well, with your thumb do you put pressure or do your let the crossfader just bounce off, and also when handling the vinly do you lightly bring it back in forth, like at 1:55 I can do the crab at that rate, but it doesn't really sound that good any tips with handling the vinly and the crossfader please reply soon! also very great and nice tutorial!!

  • @dIMPULSEj Hey! ok do you scratch hamster / reverse like I do? If so, not too much pressure on the fader, just kinda relax. If your crossfader does not have a good sharp cut in then that might be the problem. let me know more about your equipment and i will let you know. A lot of it is just pure practice and repetition. try and just do the movement on the record release then add record control in after you have got the fader hand down. i practiced with a looping sound for a long while.

  • @studioscratches hey thank you for replying fast! I use a rane ttm57 mixer and I have 2 numark ttx's now I think why my crab scratches can't really be heard because I have them, I plan to get technics some time in the future, have you ever spinned on numarks, and if so how much better is the switch to technics? and I just scratch noramlly not hamster, and also I loop a sample and when I do my crab scratch I can hear all 4 individual sounds, but its just when i'm handling the vinyl please respond

  • @dIMPULSEj hmm shouldn't be the turntables. TTM57 same as me in terms of mixer. have you got the cross fader settings to the sharpest cut in possible? scratching normally your thumb needs to press to keep the fader shut then the fingers should just cut the sound in. what sample are you using also. maybe post a video and i can see what you are doing. try and make it as clear as possible so i can see and hear whats going on. - Short-E

  • @studioscratches yeah I think I will and I too am using sample ahhhh and ahh yeaah and also have you spinnned on numarks before and if so, how is the feel scratching better on technics?

  • @dIMPULSEj hey, havent used numarks so cant really say, but what i will say is that nothing has topped technics for me. I had vestax pdx 2000 for a while but swapped them for technics as prefer the feel. try and have a go on someone elses if possible but i highly doubt you would be disappointed with technics.

  • @studioscratches yeah, I actually love the feel of them, and the look, I am actually saving up for some M5G'S :D hey, I heard that Rane had actually bought Technics and are making their own versions of it, have you heard of that? I fyou have do you have any info on it?

  • @dIMPULSEj Hey haven't heard any info on that myself. I prefer the mk2s to the 5s myself but the 5s are still good.

  • I've been Heard of u Now I know where to send BIG SHOUTZ NEEE-IIICCCE!!! SCratchz right C'here

  • @ODUBBZYA777 hee hee thanks for watching!

  • thank you so much, luv you!

  • Short E, do you ever use four fingers when you crab? I crab the same as you, with 3 fingers, but I was wondering if the fourth finger is overkill. It makes a great sound but is much harder to keep consistent.

  • @tony2sandals sometimes, i use 3 more regularly than 4 but go with whatever sound you want to make! it is a bit hard but practice makes perfect!

  • ok so im like a beginner at djing in general. i bought the IDJ3 and when i try to do any kind of scratches. it is just horrible. ive seen many different tutorials on how to scratch and i see they all use records like you are here. why is that?

  • @mrchango147 hey it just gives you the utmost control. the sound is coming off the record raw so when you move the record you are in direct contact with the sound, instead of everything having to be processed electronically. hope that makes sense. Also you need a really sharp cross fader cut in. Hope that helps

  • @studioscratches yes it makes sense. thank you. you are great btw:)

  • @mrchango147 thanks!

  • i want to marry you....

  • hey short e :) what is that record youre scratching with called? i need one that had "aww yeah" in it lol

  • @blackfriednoodle superseal - see video description

  • @blackfriednoodle

Ooh Yeah by Moby from the album Last Night

let me know how it comes along?

  • This feels utterly impossible without a reversed crossfader... I need 2 more thumbs.

  • @bassmzero you can totally do it!

  • @studioscratches haha how?

  • @yolbit practice practice practice!

  • I'm good at transformer but I'm very bad at this. I use the regular set up for the mixer, is it easier to crab scratching hamster style because you don't have to use your thumb on the mixer as much or is it the same amount of difficulty?

  • @emopalstrawberri nah its the same!

  • @emopalstrawberri i though the same thing but i kept practicing and now i can do it :D

just try to put more pressure on your fingers and less on your thumb

  • @supermathi good advice - the thumb keeps the fader shut and the fingers tap the fader to cut in.

  • @emopalstrawberri hey man. I had the exact same problem when I first started learning the scratches. I was amazing at making great sounds with transformers but I couldn't seem to do much else. I was using the standard setting on the fader. Then I saw just about all of the great DJs using hamster style and doing all kinds of things I couldn't, even though I knew how to do the scratches they performed. Crabs will become much easier but you will have to relearn transformers.

  • @camobarker You could also use wax paper to make them more slippery. Use a vinyl as a template and cut two circles. There you go.

  • What kind of curve adjustment do you have that mixer on?

  • @erick329 tightest cut in possible!

  • @camobarker sure i use butterrugs by thudrumble. pretty slippy! nice and thin for minimal skippage too.

  • @camobarker hey yes its called reverse or hamster - comes from where djs used to cut with the upfaders. no one way is better, just a preference - Short-E

  • Yo nice scratching! Was just wondering where you got those deck covers? HTFR used 2 sell them but I cant find them on their website anymore. I really wanna make my 1210's mirrored. Please if anyone knows where 2 get them & how much they cost PLEASE let me know cos they look super cool! I'm in Dublin, Ireland by the way...Peace...DJTrueSoul.

  • @truesouljs hey i got them with the decks second hand i belive they came from HTFR. im not sure where else does them. try google "technics chrome faceplate" some results come up or add UK for specifics. anyone else know? - Short-E

  • When you are working the fader when you crab are you actually applying "force" (for lack of a better term) back with the thumb or is the fader light enough to just kinda bounce off of your thumb...It's the one thing I can't seem to get working. Also the 'ah yeahh' cuts were really nice

  • @bigheadmikelove more bouncing than force! hand is quite relaxed. keep practicing its a strange one. practice the motion without a fader anywhere you are. glad you liked the ahh yeh cuts!

  • what mixer is that?

i saw rob swift using that before too

  • @chicostick90 its a vestax 06 pro. check video description for more

  • what's the name of that lp? need battle breaks!

  • @checo878 superseal by thudrumble

  • BASTARD! The crossfader on my mixer is too fucking tight. Guess I'm buying an Innofader...

  • is this a demo or a tutorial?

  • Someone plz reply me the name of the instrumental plzzzz

  • @cjcjcj212 Hey please check the video description there is a link to the beat pack on the studio scratches site. Thanks.

  • what instrumental are you using in this vid ?

  • @blackfriednoodle Hey please check the video description there is a link to the beat pack on the studio scratches site. Thanks.

  • hamster is better for skratchin

  • god damn dus ne one crab normally???? issit jus a lost cause cant seem to get it down am i gonna hav to relearn evrythin hamster?

  • @chooby3000 No just apply the principles. If you scratch regular there is also dj angelos tutoriAls he scratches regular. Hope that helps.

  • @chooby3000 Once you learned in regular position you should learn hamster

  • @chooby3000 also D-Styles.

  • That's what i cal Crabbing....Nice again!!

  • all the other scratches i have down but this one is tough

  • @steveshort4steven yeh its a bit different. Keep practicing!

  • hamster is cool and all but its mainly useful for scaratch dj's

as hamster for juggles... ive tried it and it gets confusing when you start juggling fast

  • @kpkopo hamster juggling takes a bit of getting used to!

  • Nice tutorial!!!

    Peace

  • nice crab

  • I swore i already posted a comment on here. question, do you use 3 fingers or 4 for the crab scratch. also do u prefer the orbit crab scratch or just regular?

  • Question. during your crab scratch, are you using 3 fingers or 4 to execute?(with or without your pinky) Also do you prefer the crab scratch orbit or regular crab scratch?

  • @madhatter536 Hi, i use 3. You can use 4. I like both scratches for different things!

  • Hey Short-e, seen you in quite a few bits now. I first saw you on that scratch documentary, at least i think it was you. It was about 5 years ago when i saw it, and i just remember the name. Thats what inspired me to start. Only been scratching since X-Mas.. Really like the tutorials. is there anywhere in the UK that i can purchase your DJ101 DVD and the follow up? need a bit of help with the juggling..! Great vids, keep them comin..!

  • @Liggy2008 HI thats Shortee from the usa, I am short-e from the UK :)

  • Impressive, im trying to get into more varations of scratching. these tutorials do help.

  • great thanks for the feedback. keep scratching!

  • is your fader revesred there? im struggling like hell at the mo trying to do do it, my fingers cant move fast enough.

  • hey yeh it is reversed. Start slow, one finger at a time then speed up. Repetition is the mother of all learning! Keep on!

  • doin a great job, been watching your videos everyday now and practicing. Thanks!

  • Thanks! Keep at it! maybe post a video response?

  • so we starting with fader open here?

  • you kinda open it with your thumb quickly first.

  • DJ Angelo is really good at breaking stuff down I just wanna see more stuff from hamster style scratchers. Thanks though, your still helping a lot of people.

  • Yeh i completely understand. I am doing more videos these are tasters to get people going and inspire them.

  • haha, my bad. You sounded like a young lad to me I see your very much a girl now. Sorry :s

  • ha ha no worries at all.

  • These really are more of demonstrations than tutorials :s It's sad cos your the only bloke on here scratching hamster with "tutorials"

  • Hi scratchgonzo. Thanks for commenting. Sorry if the tutorials are not as indepth as you would like. Try looking also for Qberts tutorials and also DJ Angelo. P.S Not that it makes any difference but I am a girl not a bloke! :D - Short-e

  • isn't the crab all 4 fingers though? I scratch Hamster too and am finding it annoying. I can do it like you with 3 fingers but really wanna get that pinky in!

  • You can use 3 or 4. I tend to only use 3. Keep practicing and flexin those fingers!

  • Crabs are strange for me. I use my right hand on the platter and my left on the fader, I also scratch "hamster" . I'm right handed and my left hand fingers just don't want to work right on this type of scratch.

  • hey hogantmwnn, keep practicing it does take a while to get the movements down. Your hand will get stronger. Let me know how it goes.

  • que consola es esa

y cuanto cuesta una como esas

  • hey short-e thx for your tutorials! these vids are what inspired me to get tables from craigslist and after two days im starting to get the chirps down lol.

i notice that you scratch on reverse, meaning when the fader is all the way to your left the scratch record is silent. i don't understand how you are making the crab scratch noises if you are hitting the fader from right to left (which silences)?

  • wow you are welcome, glad to help. Its kinda hard to explain in text. the crab is cutting the sound off. can anyone else help explain this in type?

  • @studioscratches To me, crabbing is just like gating an audio track like in music production. It just cuts the audio clip into bits and cuts in and out.

  • @andyberike The crossfader setting is set to Reverse, so it gives the "Hamster" style affect. Many mixer's have this option, it's personal preference to use. Also, the slope is adjusted to the sharpest setting to cut off for scratching.

  • The crab scratch:the most difficult in my opinion.

  • @steeltownbrown52 its the eazyest one for me.

  • I found Joe cooley's and chirps harder to learn than crabs, I still cant twiddle properly because my hand is so used to the crab tecnique. Once you've found your flow with crabs its like any other pattern and you just know how to do them. Bit like riding a bike really. Scratch it up!

  • ohh noo ;D

fast delayed 2clickers or clicks + tears in the same time are more diffcult than crabs.

  • crabs are kinda tough and intimidating at first but imo flares are the toughest

  • Great Tutorial!!! Love that face plate on your 1200... Where can I get one of those?

  • cheers, mine came with my decks but check hard to find records in the UK or google technics faceplates. PEACE!

  • thanks for all the thanks. keep practicing :) happy scratching! - Short-e

  • Again, fantastic tutorial. You are an invaluable resource to everyone learning how to scratch. Thanks again. Best wishes, and a happy new year!

  • You make some bad ass tutorials

  • Practice makes perfect! thanx 4 ur tutorials

  • damn!

  • cool
