is it good to go from not running for 2 months straight from when i was in shape, to going back to every day and as much as possible instantly? cause thats what im doing right now
as a professional boxer I can jog 1 hour even though I rested & did nothing 1 week before, but when 1 month before the competition I jog 1 hr & 30 mins uphill & its very exhausting.
It's funny how he talks about starting off at 8 miles and going up 2 miles per week when I can barely run 2 miles without stopping...he should know that the people watching this video obviously don't have great fitness levels, if I could run 8 miles allready why would I be watching this?! :p
i need to run continuously...i have never been able to before...but i am going to run the same distance for months on end to get rid of my walking when running...the shortest distance i cant run continuously is 2km...
This is so true. I jumped from my usual 7 miles to 11 miles in a little over a week, and now I haven't been been able to run for an entire month. The tendon on my left foot is messed up.
So yeah, building up slowly is key for injury prevention.
It's a lot more difficult to run a mile in under five minutes than to run a few miles. I can jog 4 on a good day, but can't do a mile in under 6.5 minutes yet.
we are literally built to run. we are one of the best long distance runners on earth. we can run an animal till it collapses. then we have an animal just lying down on the ground in front of you. that gets more meat than using a bow... but no one cares now cause of stores... just saying. if you dont run your denying your heritage. anyway...
Used to run 4 miles back when i was in the military. But that was like 10 years ago. Ever since i been on my butt watching tv or in front of my computer. I'm not fat or chubby. But im completely out of shape. I can barely run half a mile. But i'll get back to the shape i was in before. Thanks for the vid.
Running 1 mile a week will not do anything for you. Because if you decide to run 1 mile a week, your wasting your time. Cross country is a consistent sport you have to run at least a mile a day. Then move up to 2 or 3 miles but at your own pace. You have to keep at it.
The advice for building it up slow is GOOD lol, I was running 12 miles a week then bumped it up to 24+ one week and got myself a nice little case of achilles tendonitis that i've been nursing now for about two weeks.
@GreatBlueKnight Such numbers are a subjet to dimishing returns. Which means that the numbers dont really stack like that, what he is saying is that if you run for two weeks like this, then by the next week you might be able to run 5% longer then last week, he never said these numbers stacked on the amounts of weeks.
About how much to bump it up, I heard something about a golden 10% rule. That you shouldn't increase your distance or speed with more than 10% per week. Obviously this should be taken as a guideline as 10 of 2 miles won't feel much like an increase at all, but you get the picture. I suppose it's either speed OR distance, but I don't remember where I read this, so I can't really confirm that theory :) Anyway, can anybody (and preferably Tim) confirm this as a good rule of thumb?
I will be running the 5k half entirely barefoot @ over 100+ degree heat.
I am already pushing further than this, and have done runs in 105 degree heat where the feet were really cooking up so to speak, but running that heat just made my feet stronger and more capable to run cooler days for extremely longer distances. Almost a 60% increase.
Push yourself hard as possible, or just entirely go barefoot. No shoes, no vibrams, just human flesh to the ground or asphalt!
5%?? WHAT A LAZY BUM. YOU PUSH YOURSELF UNTIL YOU ARE CLOSE TO DEATH! THATS HOW THE AFRICANS DO IT. THEY ARE ALREADY HALF DEAD AT THE START OF ALL MARATHONS AND WIN BECAUSE THEY ARE EMPTY BODIES RUNNING LIKE MACHINES. AND LIKE ALL MACHINES THEY DON'T FEEL ANY PAIN. SCUMBAGS
Here's what not to do... go from never running more than 10km in your life to getting marathon fit in 2 months. Get an achilles injury on your last LONG run (44km) 1 month b4 race day. Take 3 wks off and do some light jogging days b4 event. Run the marathon and finish with a stress fracture in the metatarsals. Don't run at all from July to December and do a 17km run to test fitness and end up with a biceps femoris tendon injury which has played up since. Endurance is easy. Injuries, not so much.
theres a alien species aparently living on earth called rods they travel as fast as the one that went passed his head at 1:49 search em up on youtube :)
Good tips. In my experience you also build endurance A LOT faster if you allow your muscles to FULLY heal between each run, be it one or two days or even more.
hey am 15 and i play rugby,i play on the wing so i got alot of speed :) but u could never ever have enough endurane or stamina but i only get to train when i go to practice which is only 3 times a week so is there any exercise i can do at home??

I'm no expert but distance running increases endurance, yes, but it also induces muscle wasting. Speedworks are better for "leaning out" without wasting muscles like if you want a body like ryan reynolds' you should be just doing 1-2 speedworks a week (a fartlek or a tempo run) and then easy paced runs of 2-3 miles 3-4 times a week.
On the contrary, just run and have fun. Don't mind the details unless you're an athlete or you compete :P
@vlysed hey thanks yo!! that realy helped out!, alota people's judgement on EXACTLY what to do has been very hazey. But the only thing i dont know about is what a "Tempo" run is?
@11033066099 Doing sprints will wear most people out a lot more quickly, so if you're doing purely sprints in your running workout it will be a relatively short workout. On the other hand, if you're just doing endurance running at a steady pace, you'll be able to run a lot longer than you could if you were doing sprints, hence burning more calories. Also, your body will be sweating for a longer duration of time with endurance running because you'll be out in the sun longer, burning more calories
@lollerskates1992 Incorrect. Interval training is actually proven to be a more intense workout, and is more effective at burning fat. 20-60 or minutes of correct interval training= short distance (100m-400m) sprints + short rest periods combined with plyometrics at high intensity will burn more calories than 20-60 minutes of pure jogging.
@lollerskates1992 That's incorrect it's been proven that sprinting(more specifically HIIT) will burn more more fat and keep more muscle than longer distance running. Longer distance running challenges your lungs and your mental state, more than your body. Where sprinting is just physically hard to do, therefore activating fast twitch muscle fibers allowing for faster fat burn. Not saying either of them are better than the other, just saying what you said is completely wrong.
@r2d23678 wannabe soldier muthafucker, I bet you can't even pass your ASVAB!!! ahaha.. now go smoke your cigarettes and get drunk you fat slobby bastard.
@CPU119 no. endurance is primarily used for pacing over distance. for some this could be just getting through their first 5K. but if you want to place (get a medal) you want to train for endurance in order to hold, say an 8 minute mile pace for the race.
Im 17 and wanted to challange myself... I didnt train for 3 week because of a foot injury, but then one morning i decided to run a Marathon before brekfast! I felt very rusty and slowmo but i put on my shoes and started to run. 3h 30min i was back home... I had just finished a marathon or more (45km) without eating or drinking anything during that day. The real great thing about it is that ive never run past 15km before, so this was a huge step for me. Is this dangerous, cuz my legs r in pain?
I'm supposed to run a half marathon in late March, but I've been having a hip pain.
I decided to rest for a week or two, but I'm cutting too close to the race date and won't have enough time to build mileage and speed. I have been running long distances before but I'm slightly rusty now. Should I actually run this race?
I gotta be honest id much prefer to do it 5-7 days a week than going to the max on 1 day only. I find doing cardio rope/running I am building endurance at a slow but steady and noticeable pace.
@Twisted86 i think he is saying, 1 day you have a long run and the rest of the day you have short runs, not run only once a week, I dunno thats how i see most people build their training schedule for endurance
@UBCBarefoot or not, we werent raised barefoot and cant change the way our body adapts to wearing shoes over our whole lives. find me one elite runner in the U.S. or other well developed country's that trains barefoot and ill think about it. dont believe everything you read
@taylort36 how about Anton Krupicka? Leadville 100, Western States 100, that good enough for you? so you don't think you can train your feet the same way you do to all your other muscles when you run? I've made the transition and am not having any injury problems, maybe you shouldn't believe everything big shoe companies tell you about what to wear.
@UBCBarefoot Yes i believe you can train your feet, as a collegiate runner, we do our cool downs in bare feet. But running 80-90 miles per week on bare feet after rarely doing it for 20 years of your life is an injury waiting to happen. how many miles do you run per week?
@taylort36 Absolutely not, it is a slowww process. You would get stress fractures almost instantly if you started that fast. Modern day running shoes tend to alter your running form, unless you know how to run midfoot it is very difficult to do with the large heel pads that they come equipped with. Running barefoot you are naturally forced to run midfoot, thats all I meant by it. The guy in the video is heel striking hard! if you have ever felt the difference you know this is not efficient!
@taylort36 , Most all of the elite marathoners from Kenya, Ethiopia and other parts of the world that produce champion distance runners actually do allot of their training barefoot. The practice of wearing bulky running shoes is (for elite runners) is to condition their body to run with more weight on the feet. This is why elite runners consider the running shoes that you and most other people wear "trainers" During a marathon, elite runners run in "racing flats"
@minuteman2006 yes but as i said, we werent raised barefoot. they were rasied barefoot and therefore are already accustomed and adapted to not using shoes. And i understand the concept of trainers and racing flats, Im a collegiate runner. We do some barefoot training as well on our cool downs after workouts, but at 80-90 miles per week our bare feet would be destroyed without shoes.
@123helenkeller wait, you say running 16 Km everyday is nothing special? Then whats is it? Well I dont was trying to say it like only Bruce could do that nono dont get me wrong, anybody could do that, but its still amazing.
Here's what worked for me. When I first started jogging I just jogged for 3 minutes. Every day I will add 1 minute to my jog. Now I can jog up to an hour :)
@maindeeboyz Just keep working on it,there is no competition and your running at your own pace.Best thing you can do is if you do take walking breaks during your run,try to cut them out and run at a slower paced jog.Works for me.
@maindeeboyz that's good! i weigh 8.5 stone and i'm about 5 ft 4, it takes me about 11mins to do 1.5 miles. i'm currently training for army selection :P
@CoffeeBeatsTea you want to get it around 10 mins mate and try interval training its wicked or if you play football keep at it because thats another form of interval training
i need to run a mile in under 9 minutes to get 60 bucks cuz they think i cant cuz im kinda chubby, but i think i can do it cuz last year i ran a 10 30 and i was straight up fat so i should do it and then, get me some new shoes, baybay!!

@CPU119 no. endurance is primarily used for pacing over distance. for some this could be just getting through their first 5K. but if you want to place (get a medal) you want to train for endurance in order to hold, say an 8 minute mile pace for the race.

He is not really saying much i will try one long run a week i guess.
ClaireSuperNana 1 year ago
I gotta be honest id much prefer to do it 5-7 days a week than going to the max on 1 day only. I find doing cardio rope/running I am building endurance at a slow but steady and noticeable pace.
Twisted86 1 year ago
@Twisted86 i think he is saying, 1 day you have a long run and the rest of the day you have short runs, not run only once a week, I dunno thats how i see most people build their training schedule for endurance

or try barefoot running...
UBCBarefoot 1 year ago
@UBCBarefoot or not, we werent raised barefoot and cant change the way our body adapts to wearing shoes over our whole lives. find me one elite runner in the U.S. or other well developed country's that trains barefoot and ill think about it. dont believe everything you read
taylort36 1 year ago
@taylort36 how about Anton Krupicka? Leadville 100, Western States 100, that good enough for you? so you don't think you can train your feet the same way you do to all your other muscles when you run? I've made the transition and am not having any injury problems, maybe you shouldn't believe everything big shoe companies tell you about what to wear.
UBCBarefoot 1 year ago
@UBCBarefoot Yes i believe you can train your feet, as a collegiate runner, we do our cool downs in bare feet. But running 80-90 miles per week on bare feet after rarely doing it for 20 years of your life is an injury waiting to happen. how many miles do you run per week?
taylort36 1 year ago
@taylort36 Absolutely not, it is a slowww process. You would get stress fractures almost instantly if you started that fast. Modern day running shoes tend to alter your running form, unless you know how to run midfoot it is very difficult to do with the large heel pads that they come equipped with. Running barefoot you are naturally forced to run midfoot, thats all I meant by it. The guy in the video is heel striking hard! if you have ever felt the difference you know this is not efficient!
UBCBarefoot 1 year ago
@taylort36 , Most all of the elite marathoners from Kenya, Ethiopia and other parts of the world that produce champion distance runners actually do allot of their training barefoot. The practice of wearing bulky running shoes is (for elite runners) is to condition their body to run with more weight on the feet. This is why elite runners consider the running shoes that you and most other people wear "trainers" During a marathon, elite runners run in "racing flats"
minuteman2006 1 year ago
@minuteman2006 yes but as i said, we werent raised barefoot. they were rasied barefoot and therefore are already accustomed and adapted to not using shoes. And i understand the concept of trainers and racing flats, Im a collegiate runner. We do some barefoot training as well on our cool downs after workouts, but at 80-90 miles per week our bare feet would be destroyed without shoes.

Bruce Lee ran 16 Km every day.
Maxaker67 1 year ago
@Maxaker67 That's irrelevant, not to mention when you run every day prettymuch all year 6 miles isn't long.
123helenkeller 1 year ago
@123helenkeller wait, you say running 16 Km everyday is nothing special? Then whats is it? Well I dont was trying to say it like only Bruce could do that nono dont get me wrong, anybody could do that, but its still amazing.

Here's what worked for me. When I first started jogging I just jogged for 3 minutes. Every day I will add 1 minute to my jog. Now I can jog up to an hour :)
Riana718 1 year ago
@maindeeboyz Just keep working on it,there is no competition and your running at your own pace.Best thing you can do is if you do take walking breaks during your run,try to cut them out and run at a slower paced jog.Works for me.

@maindeeboyz that's good! i weigh 8.5 stone and i'm about 5 ft 4, it takes me about 11mins to do 1.5 miles. i'm currently training for army selection :P
