While this is a good song and duran duran was a good band, the 80's were without a doubt the worst era in the history of man kind. absolute shite. lived in it, hated it. 70's were better, 90's were MUCH MUCH better, loved the 90's, new millenium is better still. The music hasent changed, you lot have just gotten tired and rusty. wake up, life is still happening. happen with it or wither away old.
@knowlgo OMG how can you say the 80's was the worst era!? Or better still how about you keep your irrelevant and pointless opinions to yourself! and saying the 70's was better LOL! if you think the goodies and all that shite are better then I think i should leave you to it...
@heskins don't hate the playa, hate the game. and don't kill the messenger just because you still have feathered ass hair, some ocean pacific corduroy shorts, and a gay sweater tied around your neck. oh yeah, and get rid of those tired ass penny loafers loser.
@knowlgo But the reality is my friend everyone old enough remembers the 80's! By these comments you sound like a stereotypical dickhead who never had the balls to wear 80's fashion at the time because you thought it was gay!. So before you call me a loser i think you should look around... i have seen some kids wearing clothes that were fashionable back in the 80's. and many clothes stores are bringing it back my friend. Although, i never wore a sweater around my neck anyway!
That is why CD sales is down when you have to look for good music. When did THAT happened? I couldn't name the current number one hit on the Billboard to save my life.
I was 12 when I first heard this song and watched this music video on TV in HK. This song impressed many teenages like me at that time. What a good song! Thanks for posting it. Recall the good memories of the 80's.
"The Reflex", released April 1984, was #1 on music charts, even with its puzzling lyrics. Strong conjecture it's either about erections or drug abuse. According to lyrics, the Reflex is a mysterious child and a game. Video was shot at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The video screen above the stage displayed naked models. At one point, a waterfall appears to pour out above the stage to soak the audience. The computer graphics were cutting edge at the time, but now look dated. (From Wikipedia)
I would just like to comment on how this video was posted on YouTube. Umm yeah I'm used to watching videos coming in loud and clear and this video just doesn't fit the criteria. I'm sorry.
just dont look and buy all the videos you want in a plce that you know with a good sound and video dont waist your time looking at this trash use you CRITERIA dont be sorry im sorry with you you idiot
I reckon its all symbolism to rootin'. The 'only child' refers to his cock finding 'Treasure in the dark'. 'Waiting by the park' could be a reference to his pubes...Maybe : )
We use to make fun of these groups, after all they came after Hard Rock. But compared to today's Pop music (can u actually call rap, hiphop Pop music or music at all) it's like 100 times better than rapcrap hiphop and all their deriatives.
haha luckely i was born a few years later so i didnt heard much of the song (or its succes:P) but i heard it in american pie movie at the stiffler dance off haha roflmao

I must have been 9 or 10 when this vid was made, I was SOOOO in love with John Taylor, Thanks for posting this vid! I loved seeing how excited the crowd was and this has to be my fave song by them!
This was filmed live at Maple Leaf Gardens which opened in 1931 in Toronto. The video was shot in the '80's and in 2007 the arena is being turned into a supermarket but their keeping the outer shell, peace
I think that I can answer this. Because, compared to today, the eighties were so much better. I mean, global warming was less, everything was less expensive (Including gas.), and life was better to live, and music was one hell of a lot better.
I may have been born in 1989, but I feel as though I have lived this decade before and loved it.
And, we weren't fighting no fucking war on terrorism!!!
I remember miners strikes, high unemployment, the IRA bombing campaign, capitalism, AIDS and the cold war. The only good thing was getting sent home from school or having days off because the teachers went on strike!
We still have strikes, mining and otherwise, The IRA at least warned when they struck (so it was property, not lives taken), Capitalism is America's second flag then as it is now (apologies to our American friends, but it is very sadly true), AIDS did not originate in the 80s, there was just a public awareness for it.
I think the 80s were the best decade in my lifetime (with began in the 60s), irrespective of some of the fashions hehe.
Most of us who actually lived through the 80s don't care to repeat it. Sociopolitical attitudes were stultifying, fashions were horrid, manners vanished, vanity became fashionable, the 60s hippie generation became shameless materialistic sellouts, and honestly, the music of the 80s sucked a steaming pile of ass. The 90s weren't a whole lot better, but so far the 00's have been OK. But take it from those of us who have been-there-done-that: no reason to re-live the 80s, thankyouverymuch.
Socio-political attitudes have not become any less ridiculous that I have witnessed. Simply changed to new forms of idiocy. Manners seem to be far more related to geo-political boundaries than any "age". Who cares what the hippies did in the 80s? Everyone makes mistakes. The music of the 80s rocked.
Man, you have some nerve. And in reality, you can't really talk for everyone here. Also, I think you have it backwards, 80's music was AWESOME. MOST of the music in the 00's is horrible. Rap is the most retarded, shameful, and ridiculous music to evr be made. It even tops Contemporary Christian as worst type of music in my mind. Anyway, Music started oing downhill in the 90's, not uphill. Thats my point.
I agree about the rap comment more than I can even say, but as far as music going downhill in the 90's - I think that is shortsighted. The radio due to monopolization has gone downhill leaving us with repeat songs of crap- but it you get music from other sources, I think you would discover a vast world of breathtaking and amazing music available. Think about it - rap is cheap as hell to produce, why do you think some recording companies love it so much?
Oh how I love this =D Why wasn't I around in the 80ies?

Another reason why CD sales are down! They don't make music like this anymore. Music nowadays is crap!
PungiFungi 2 years ago 4
Umm, no, CD sales are down because people are cheapskates and download everything or copy it from a friend.
There's plenty of good music today. You just need to look for it and quit whining about what they play on Top 40 radio.

Well no, because people from this generation will like this music, like hardcore kids, gangsters, 20th century hippies.

what is this song about?

It's about getting an erection - a reflex - the embaressment that comes with it and the humor that our bodies give us with these fun little things.
Bluntly - He was with a girl he liked and boned out and has to live down her telling everybody.
