I drove two '66 Corvairs--a hardtop and a convertible, both purchased by my dad around 1972 for a couple hundred bucks after Nader destroyed Corvair's reputation. They handled well and were fun to drive, but they had one extremely annoying trait: when you turned on the heat, you would get blasted by exhaust fumes. So in winter, the choice was to freeze or to get a headache every time you went anywhere. I guess that doesn't much matter in southern California, but it sure did in Kentucky!
Same thing in a VW Beetle 1303 1974 year. The only difference is that the Beetle freezed even if you turned on the "heater" which took the heat as you know from the exhaust pipes. However in summer the heater worked ! :( That and the high noise because of the turbine are the two main misadvantages of air cooled cars !
@Awesomeman1987, how is this a dangerous car in any way, shape or form? Ralph Nader was shut down time after time with his "accusations" towards the Corvair. I personally own a 1963 Monza with the 110hp in it and it will flip just as easily as anything else it's size.
The blue Corsa 180 at the beginning of the video looks just like the one I had back in the '70s - great little car - I remember surprising a few small block V8 Mustangs when I got to the next stop light before they did. Thanks for the memories.
Actually, the smear campaign on the Corvair very much exaggerated their driving challenges. They were not flip prone, in fact Nader had to over-correct at high speeds to flip it, which will flip 99% of cars. If they had one big challenge, it was their oversteer.
so not ture my man. unsafe at any speed he wasn't driving the cars in the first place and it was the indepedant rear suspesion over extending. that was the problemo. nobody "over corrected at high speeds" they were all things that happend to average people and some of those people died because chey was to cheap to put a proper suspenion componat on there cars. i like corvairs and i have ridden in a couple.
The early models had a swing-axle type suspension with limiters on it that would keep it from hyper-extending. Go look at the first IRS Jeep's if you want to talk about that. Though, yes, they did improve it later. One of its big downfalls is its high amount of oversteer that the average front engine driver wasn't used to.
I've seen people do 360's at speed across 4 lanes just to keep on going. Fun to wave as they face backwards on their way around. Though hes driven them since '62.
