The hard drive will not spin up in the Windows environment--it can't because of the coding. Linux systems will see the drive and can even format it but it will still not power up in Windows. There was some discussion about this in another thread but I have since lost it...Windows may at some point see the drive but the info is erroneous and the hdd cannot be accessed......Hackers have been trying to open this thing for a couple of years. Anyone know how it's done?
@garwatch dos is NOT WINDOWS, use FDISK,, did you not read my post, cheese n rice, Kid. Im said nothing of using windows or Dpart, when youve done that, i will answer your questions, if not , looK for another hard drive, maybe a bigger one. If you dont no what fdisK is you r done hacKing. I have a question for you,,, R YOU OLD ENOUGH TO OWN A COPY OF WIN98, cheese n rice . try it!!!!!!
@garwatch The hard drive will spin up in the windows environment. It has nothing to do with the coding. As long as power is supplied, the hard drive will turn on, and the disks will spin up to speed.

The coding only applies when windows attempts to read the disks. If it's in a format that windows can't understand (eg. EXT2, EXT3, EXT4), then windows won't show it.
This hard drive is "married" to the unit with special hard coding.....Maybe this older one can be unlocked but no such thing with the new units! -It's small anyway-- go for a 500gb for all the effort. Linux dpart will reformat it but is still of no use for the pc.......try it!!!!!!
My current DirecTV receiver is an R15, I got the service back in 2007. It's cool to see what is actually in the thing.

@garwatch You can. Just go to disk management and format it. I've done it before. Windows Safe! XD
