I didn't know they're called growls! They're completely different from the Death Metal growls, which are produced by the false vocal chords. I think she used her chest voice to produce them. Seems very hard to do the ''double voice'', though. I haven't really heard anyone else singing like that! She had such an unique talent! :)
@FrozenMermaid666 Yma sumac is one of a kind, she could do amazing things with her voice, and that´s because she liked to do any sound possible with it since she was a child.
@Neisfai So true! There's no one like her! She could even imitate birds! :)
By the way, have you ever heard about Charles Kellogg? He had 12 1/2 octaves, and he could also imitate birds. His style was way different than Yma's, but I think he was really amazing! :-P
Yma Sumac was one of my favorite singer way back in 1955. I could not get enough of her "Taita Inty" Virgin of the forest. I still get goose pumps every time I hear it. I am sorry for not been able to see and hear her concerts before her death in -08. Her voice range was incredible
First of all let me state that I've always loved her voice, her presentation, and don't get me wrong, I am NOT criticizing anything about her!
However, they've always billed her as the woman with the 5(!) octave range - that is INCORRECT! She had a range from B2 (oct.+a Major2d below middle C) to C#7 (that is a minor 6th above the Queen of the Night's high F), also 4 oct+a Major second.
I've enjoyed tremendously when she walked off the stage somewhere in Germany. MCs are sometimes idiots!
@abbekiubebe - She mentions in one of her videos that from her early years she imitated the sounds of the Amazon, from bird calls to animals big and small, so that's probably how she developed those sounds. I can relate to that. ;- )
I don't think you've included too many of Yma's "many voices" here; most of your clips simply focus on her "growl" technique. She actually produced quite a few notes lower than those you included, but these low notes were not produced with a growl technique. I was also surprised that you didn't include her extreme high notes.
I did some research. This sound is produced by the false vocal chords, and that's probably the only similarity to metal growls. I also tried it and it hurt my throat. Yma must have practiced a lot and she also had a proper vocal technique.
