John Duffey is (was, and probably always will be) the greatest . . . i had privilege of seeing the Seldom Scene perform live several times in the mid '70s . . . unforgettable .. . superlatives don't do them justice . . . it's nice to see my appreciation for them is so widely shared . . .

I was very privileged as a young girl with my dad and the band we traveled to all the bluegrass festivals and played and this group has always been one of my favorites !! miss the good old days!!
Not long before he died I reckon. I saw him at Birchmere 11/96 and in his eyes I could see a bad heart. next thing I heard he'd been forwarded uptown.

I'm 35, was raised listening to this stuff - my dad is a Country Gentlemen and Seldom Scene junkie... lol I got into music with this influence on me and it seems there are so few people these days who appreciate true musicianship. Although my heart lies with more of the alt/folk/rock/indie stuff - this band, in particular Jonh Duffey certainly had a strong influence on me. Every time I watch these videos I get goose bumps and or my eyes swell up. So sad that John is gone.
John Duffey is very missed in bluegrass music. The man was a legend. I have a video with them playing Lay Down Sally, wearing little children's sunglasses. It's on VHS and I am going to have it put onto a DVD. I love it. It's priceless to me. RIP John.
i 1st tried to get in to see the Scene at the old Birchmere, in a run down shopping center off Walter Reed Road in Alexandria, VA in the late 70's.....we got there too late and it was sold out but i remember seeing & hearing Duffy doing this song thru the glass door and was mezmerized....turned into a huge
scene fan over the next twenty years or so.
Incredible band, but what always got to me was Duffys beutiful, pure tenor. RIP JD
John Duffey was a great influence on me as a musician. He was an institution. His music lives on. This video from '96 was the same year he passed away. Sadly, his declining health shows in his eyes here... RIP John Duffey!
I love this song. I'm 34, I listen to Black Sabbath, Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and many others. Something avbout this song though. When I was a kid I went to Bluegrass shows with my parents though
Wait, let me get this straight? John Duffy is no longer with us? I'll have to go think about that Through the Bottom of the Glass. Used to see these guys almost weekly at the Cellar Door, the Birchmere, or County Line. Went to Sunday afternoon pickin parties with these guys,
Anybody got any recordings of the Katie Dalie radio show? I beeb looking for the words to Ely Renfro. Anybody remember that?
this is a spectacular group..immensely talented. i don't actually care for the bluegrass genre of music, but i could listen to these guys all night..rip mr. DUFFEY..you were so cool..
I was at this festival! Some of the best times of my life occurred at the Festival of the Bluegrass. I've been there 20 years in a row, since I was 1. Seldom Scene, IIIrd Tyme Out, Tony Rice, Allison Krauss!!!! Oh My God I Love Bluegrass!
To the best of my knowledge and the friends I know that were personal friends of John he passed away from a hear attack. may he RIP In heavens Blugrass band. I saw him in 22 and never will foreget it.
These guy's were great, Duffey had an unmistakable & awesome voice. I never did know what he died from, anything I read just said that he died suddenly, but didn't list a cause of death. Sad loss
The stuff legends are made of. Amazing vocals, and a beautiful song.
Thank you for posting.

This is the 1996 Lineup (l to r)
Ben Eldridge (banjo), John Duffy (mandolin), Ronnie Simpkins (bass), Dudley Connell (guitar) and Fred Travers (dobro).
We all miss John Duffy. His was the greatest bluegrass tenor voice I've ever heard.

For some wierd reason John Duffey allways reminds of big tony soprano.

JD White,
I believe John Duffey passed away from a heart attack at home. He looks tired in this video, and not as much power in his vocals.
I've been a great fan of his for decades.
