One flew right over my head today when put walking the dogs it was about to land at Newcastle airport (uk) it looked like it was only going like 50 mph above me huge engine sound also :)
@Askalijupaa No. It's too big. Too expensive. It's more a successor to C-141 and a supplement to C-5.
It's very difficult to improve on the basic C-130. The outcome every time seem to be: "why don't we make a new C-130 version instead, with new engines and avionics?"
@Askalijupaa Lol. No, I know the Airbus A400M is a new European aircraft. It tries to avoid direct competition with C-130 by being 50% larger (payload weight). It has not been exactly a smash hit. In development since early 80'ies, it's very expensive for the countries participating in the project. I think cost overruns are like above €10 billion. To add problems, many potential customers have cancelled orders to purchase C-130J instead.
I was on the 1100 block of 2nd Ave. in Asbury Park delivering Rte. 9 today when I heard the rumbling engines of a low flying plane. When I looked up I was surprised to see a C-17 flying over Asbury Park which is unusual because their normal flight path is further south to Maguire AFB. And growing up in Howell, NJ the C-141's going in and out of Maguire would sometimes fly right over the house in Winston Park. During the Yom Kippur War in 73' C-141's were flying in and out night and day.
I am a lady but: i love this fat bird's body moving-flying around so lightly esp taking off and landing with that immediate stop- USAF rules! I wish I could just sit at the back of the cockpit wooooooooooof
NOW ! im i going mad or did anyone else see it ! TRANSMITTED on UK TV was america has talent ! and a young girl entered her self SMALL VERY ATTRACIVE , they asked her and what do you do she RELPIED IM A C17 PILOT DID U SEE IT ! or was i lacking sleep !
@Arthashat it's called reverse thrust. Engine thrust is temporarily redirected forward. Look at the engines at 8:11 to 8:30 and you'll see the pilot places the inboard engines in reverse thrust again. The engine appears to split apart somewhat.
@CRHAYNES123 thats just like saying i wonder what it feels like to fall over know all that pain was influenced by a crack on the pavement / sidewalk :) :P
@SuperRetardedPENGUIN First of all it has jet engines so it's not an AC-130, 2nd. It doesn't have a guns on it so it's not an AC-130, 3rd. AC-130's are not allowed to fly during the day.
the amazing thing about a C-17 if you have ever seen one you will know what im talking about, but the C-17 if really Stubby it seems really small and bunched and that is why it is such a magnificent sight.
@akkadianno naah but i have watched the show ufo hunters on the history channel, and their is this ledge or land formation were at night and early morning you can see all of area 51, (with binoculars) it is a great view but then again it's only tv
@dunnobutwayne that was actually pretty normal for a C17. They're made for short takeoff's and landings. They pull up that steep of an angle to avoid missile locks in hostile territory
@psadpoiafsdf Both, the aircraft is design to take off on short runways, landing in a hostile zone you won't find 2 mile long strips or humanitarian ops in rural areas. The design of the aircraft allows it to operate through small, austere airfields. The C-17 can take off and land on runways as short as 3,000 feet (914 meters) and only 90 feet wide (27.4 meters).
Just aviation lovers understand the pleasure of watching such a footage. I am an aviation lover since I was a child. Dream on the day I will get my pilot license...I am a woman close to my 50's. That's not a fair statement! The c-17 is not intended for the same things as the c-130. The c-130, being a propeller plane, can land in dirt without fear of rocks in the engine, and because of its size requires only a short runway. The c-17 is used for larger amounts of cargo on a paved runway to established places! There will always be a need for both kinds, if not specifically the current model!
In the 1970s, the US Air Force began looking for a replacement for the C-130 Hercules tactical airlifter. The Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST) competition was held, with Boeing proposing the YC-14, and McDonnell Douglas proposing the YC-15, which became the C-17.
original purpose was to replace the C-130, but the project was cancelled and soon after the C141 replacement project came along which was perfect for the YC-15. If the 141s were refurbed and still flying, the C-17 probably wouldn't exist
Not so sure I agree with you SporkMan. The 141 was a bad ass, but referb or not, I think the C-17 would still be flying! I kinda miss the old 141!! : (
WOW !!! Heavy was making 50% banks, flybys. I thought it was great when the pilot pull down the geer !!! In the short amount of air heavy was GREAT !! I loved the landing also and when the place did full reverse engines, WOW ! Great Vid man Rock on !!
We had one of these from the Alaska National Air Guard come down to New Zealand for the RNZAF Airshow at Whenuapai Airbase. I dwarfed everything that we had, and when it flew they took it right down below the tree line. Its amazing how somthing so big can just disapear into the landscape. I got to go inside and climb up and have a look around the cockpit and sit in the pilots seats. Its one badass aircraft and the female Captian that flew it was a hot bonde ;)
these planes are MASSIVE i'v eflown in a few of them from charleston air base to ramsein. for some reason the passenger seats on the second deck are facing backwards, kinda different during take off to be thrown forward.. and they are also known for catching their engines on fire.. but i always arive safely.. god bless our troops..
I live less then a mile from a MAC Air Force Base. There are many c17's in and out of the base, There isn't much this plane CAN'T Do! An amazing machine!
A live right under a C - 17 globemasters flight path. They fly by everyday for about 3-5hours every 20mins. Pretty cool to see them. My favorite plane in the usaf is the c17
I did not resist to make a comment. I can't believe that mens could do this kind of ship. It looks like a UFO made by Alliens. I can't believe that mens can pilot them.
i dont know why but when i see this plane the only name that comes into my mind is BIG BETTY they gotta paint that on the side of this C-17 cause this baby is BIGGG

C 17 good airlift performance. The USAF,RAF, RAAF and others fly it.
The Indian Air Force just placed an order for 10 C 17s'.
70 ton payload over good distance is awesome to say the least.
