@Askalijupaa No. It's too big. Too expensive. It's more a successor to C-141 and a supplement to C-5.

It's very difficult to improve on the basic C-130. The outcome every time seem to be: "why don't we make a new C-130 version instead, with new engines and avionics?"

@Askalijupaa Lol. No, I know the Airbus A400M is a new European aircraft. It tries to avoid direct competition with C-130 by being 50% larger (payload weight). It has not been exactly a smash hit. In development since early 80'ies, it's very expensive for the countries participating in the project. I think cost overruns are like above €10 billion. To add problems, many potential customers have cancelled orders to purchase C-130J instead.

I was on the 1100 block of 2nd Ave. in Asbury Park delivering Rte. 9 today when I heard the rumbling engines of a low flying plane. When I looked up I was surprised to see a C-17 flying over Asbury Park which is unusual because their normal flight path is further south to Maguire AFB. And growing up in Howell, NJ the C-141's going in and out of Maguire would sometimes fly right over the house in Winston Park. During the Yom Kippur War in 73' C-141's were flying in and out night and day.

@Arthashat it's called reverse thrust. Engine thrust is temporarily redirected forward. Look at the engines at 8:11 to 8:30 and you'll see the pilot places the inboard engines in reverse thrust again. The engine appears to split apart somewhat.

The design of the aircraft allows it to operate through small, austere airfields. The C-17 can take off and land on runways as short as 3,000 feet (914 meters) and only 90 feet wide (27.4 meters).

Just aviation lovers understand the pleasure of watching such a footage. I am an aviation lover since I was a child. Dream on the day I will get my pilot license...I am a woman close to my 50's. Have a special attention towards the C-17 Globemaster III. It is a great military aircraft and seens to play with "G-Forces". Aircrafts seem to have proper life. As a physical body they really do, but the brain on and behind it is human. Great project!

@256dallas I just visited an Air Force recruiter actually, for in flight jobs they said Id be waiting like a year and even then I might still have to wait to get into bootcamp. But who knows she didnt really check. I am not impressed with the Air Force recruiters at all to be honest.

That's not a fair statement! The c-17 is not intended for the same things as the c-130. The c-130, being a propeller plane, can land in dirt without fear of rocks in the engine, and because of its size requires only a short runway. The c-17 is used for larger amounts of cargo on a paved runway to established places! There will always be a need for both kinds, if not specifically the current model!

C 17 good airlift performance. The USAF,RAF, RAAF and others fly it.

The Indian Air Force just placed an order for 10 C 17s'.

70 ton payload over good distance is awesome to say the least.

We had one of these from the Alaska National Air Guard come down to New Zealand for the RNZAF Airshow at Whenuapai Airbase. I dwarfed everything that we had, and when it flew they took it right down below the tree line. Its amazing how somthing so big can just disapear into the landscape. I got to go inside and climb up and have a look around the cockpit and sit in the pilots seats. Its one badass aircraft and the female Captian that flew it was a hot bonde ;)

these planes are MASSIVE i'v eflown in a few of them from charleston air base to ramsein. for some reason the passenger seats on the second deck are facing backwards, kinda different during take off to be thrown forward.. and they are also known for catching their engines on fire.. but i always arive safely.. god bless our troops..
