I'm pretty sure people call them hardcore because they have breakdowns. Well,Meshuggah pretty much invented the breakdown, at least how BTM plays them.

meshuggah and beneath the massacre sound nothing alike. meshuggah is pretty much constant polyrhythms and really hard shit to play, btm is just kinda lame, not saying they dont have any talent, cause they might have a little, but they are using it in a bad way

I know they don't sound viscerally similar, but I can see how meshuggah affected their approach. hell, I can see how touring with gojira affected BTMs newest album.

I have seen them live several times and find their music to be invigorating and, most importantly, unusual. nobody fingers their fretboards like 'neath, not with their style.

he does a few cool things, but in between them is way too many breakdown riffs and boring chugga chuggas that dont vary much between eachother, not really similar to the meshuggah and sometimes gojira style of heavy riffing to odd time signatures and polyrhythms. although i do get sick of meshuggah too even though i like them a lot more than BTM, because after so many albums.. how much more can they really do with that style? not much. gojira on the other hand, have a very good blend of style.

personally, meshuggah, BTM, and gojira are my favorites, I guess I make connections between them them that might not exist. You might hear repetetive chugging, but I hear a defined style with small variances making each song unique yet plainly sounding like their own sound.

all tech metal sounded the same to me when I first heard it, but now it all sounds different to me.
