  • cool !! make more !!

  • he became not vytaytas the great he bacame Vytautas Magnus....

  • This is a most interesting topic in my opinion. I hope you will make more videos along this line.

  • @1worldgov1 Thank you! I may do some videos of Finnish history in autumn. Thanks for subscribing as well!

  • @Vitoldian Good video! But I have a few comments. There was no "Baltic states" until the 20th century. Tribes of Balts and Finns lived on the territory from the Baltic to the Volga and Ural, colonized by Slavic settlers from the south-west.The official language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the western Russian or "Ruski jazjik" (Old Belarusian language). This was fixed in the Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The full name of the country was Grand Duchy of Lithuania,Rusia,Samogitia

  • @Aleph500adam Okay, one learns something new everyday! Thaks for pointing that out. I guess these anachronisms slip into our speech very stealthily, for example too often I utter the phrase "The Renaissance started in the 14th century ITALY..." when I mean "-- in the city states of what is nowadays Italy".

  • @Vitoldian Ah, now I understand. In this sense, you're right, as art experts often use such terms as Italian art of 14-15 centuries.BTW Could you confirm the information that the hydronym Moscow (MOSKVA) is a Finnish hydronym and it can be translated from some Finno-Ugric dialects as "Muddy Water"?Since the Moscow region was inhabited by the Lithuanian and the Finno-Ugric tribes who mixed with the Slavic newcomers in 15-18 centuries. So most Russian rivers have not Slavic but Finno-Ugric names

  • Great stuff more please !

  • Greetings from Lithuania Vitoldian :)

  • Makes me want to learn more about Eastern Europe, present and past, and distant past!

  • Wow, this is great Vitoldian. I love every minute. I had some sketchy ideas of the events, not enough to see the story. Thanks heaps for the effort.

  • @MacNutz2 Entirely my pleasure! I know I have a largely romantic view of the Middle Ages, but the period has always fascinated me. It must be due to the types of literature I chiefly read when growing up, namely fantasy and historical novels.

  • Awesome. I love history

  • @Coquipirate Goody! History indeed is the greatest thing about past.

  • Very interesting, thank you for posting this! It's always good to have a few more pieces of the immense jigsaw, that is history!

  • @finlarg My pleasure! Still, I probably won't do that many history videos, at least this one didn't get much attention.

  • No huh huh... Hemmetisti laadukasta sisältöä vajaassa kymmenessä minuutissa.

  • @aKindofHeart Kunhan ei ollut ironisesti, niin kiitän! Tää perustu mun tokana vuonna hissan kasikurssilla tekemään tutkielmaan.

  • Nice vid bud.

  • @monkeytail2002 Thanks!

  • This is funny, my country Luxembourg still is a Grand Duchy and the forest surrounding the capital city is the Grunewald.

  • @goxster Can this be a coincidence, or are we witnessing some great, cosmic powers at work here?

  • Thanks for the video! I know so little about the history of Lithuania and this really helps.

One question, were there "state" religions before the adoption of Christianity? If so, what were they?

  • @marcmerlin According to Wikipedia, the Lithuanian state religion before the time Jogaila and Vytautas was a form of polytheist paganism. They worshiped gods such as Andajus, Perkūnas, Teliavelis, and Žvorūna. It also states that even though Mindaugas took the baptism, he still continued the worship of these deities :)

  • @marcmerlin

    paganism

  • @marcmerlin today that religion is known as Romuva and still exists in Lithuania ^^
