Clara Ward - Short History

Clara Ward & the Ward Singers pioneered a lot of what quartets are doing today including 'driving.' She had an awesome drive. I would love to see a live video of her performing.

What's funny about her career is that she was the charisma of the act, but the actual singing was usually in the hands of the Ward Singers. I can't tell you how many times the lead gets all the credit while being propped up by truly gifted singers who get next to no credit. I LOVE Clara Ward, but this is so unfair, because the Ward Singers were just the best.

@gospellin What purpose does it serve to label someone especially since they're deceased. A persons contributions to our culture should certainly outweigh their personal life.After all, none is Perfect but the Father. She happened to be a good friend and a good-hearted person.With maturity one learns not to throw stones unless we've made no mistakes in our own life. Nothing is gained by hate but much is gained by love.

@cjzzzzz It's more accurate to say that Clara Ward occasionally had sexual relationships with women. She was sexually abused in childhood by a cousin, and her sister Willa claims that Gertrude worked to prevent Clara from forming any romantic attachments, including ending her marriage and causing her to miscarry. Willa describes Clara as explaining her occasional lesbian encounters as the sexual expression likely to escape her mother's notice.
