  • you should do something like all these lessons for the game "Go"

  • GREAT TUTORIAL!

  • from 4:48 through 5:30 the demonstration of saving the rook and bishop, but in both cases white (opponent) dropped a pawn in the way to stop a check... is that illegal or is it only illegal to do that if its a checkmate or neither? and if you dont mind answering id like to know what the rule was for dropping peices other than a pawn in the path of a check or checkmate.

  • @superbadhinie99 There's absolutely no rule against dropping pieces to block a check. It's a big part of shogi. The only illegal drops are drops where the piece has nowhere to go (pawn, lance, knight at the end of the board) and immediate mate with a dropped pawn. Any other drops are completely acceptable.

  • @superbadhinie99 Oh, and two pawns in a file, of course.

  • On 5:58 you are suggesting an illegal move, because your bishop can't promote in your own territory ;)

  • @torntrof It's legal. Look at the square it's coming from. It starts inside the opponent's camp, so it can promote.

  • oh i'm sorry i made a mistake

  • isn't that an illegal pawn move at 5:26?

  • isn't that an illegal pawn move at 5:26 ?

  • at 6:30 the bishop could have go for the other gold! :(

that would be best for the opponentm right ?

  • at 5:38 can you also promote the lance to protect the silver?

  • Yeah! You're right.

  • what is the best move at 6:51 if white attacks the gold by a bishop drop on 3g?

  • @jiseok0809 Sente can defend against ☖B*3g with ☗B*6d.

  • when then rook forked the king and bishop... how did it get there? think about it

  • thanks u taught me a good gamme :D

  • Shion no Ou isn't great for learning to play they skip out 90+% of the game play.

It is good for getting you interested in it though.

  • Wait at the last example.. T he horse is c hecking the king. . so if white takes the horse. He loses.

  • @KaitoDiend ops.. My bad didn;t see it correc tly.

  • At 2:52 white took 2 turns. White captures the knight with silver and then moved king right afterwards.

  • White didn't captured the knight.

See which player's piece stand the knight went to.

  • at 5:28 you can also double threat the pawn, even if the opponent knight promotes, it's pointless, if he doesn't promote, the king will be in a bad situacion ;).

Your final suggestion in the last example was exactly how I planed it too ^^. thanks for another lesson Hidetchi-san.

  • Oh, you're right. Nice suggestion.

  • where did you get the easier to read shogi pieces?

  • whoa, just like the double atari in Igo, by the way i have a few videos about igo/go, if you want to learn more visit my page.

By the way, is there a place you can find a cheap shogi set with JAPANESE characters, in the usa (like a store)

  • I know how to play go.

How about searching it in Amazon, or ebay?

  • well my parents arent big fans of credit cards over the internet =/ but i can try to convince them... if im lucky i might get a go-ban too ^^;

  • Concering the problem on 7:06 wounldn't be better if you moved the silver up in front of the knight?

  • There is no silver on the board or in hand at 7:06. The knight is forking a rook and a bishop.

  • A huge shogi board can be seen in the 2001/2002 movie Cowboy Bebop - Knockin' on Heaven's Door; and also in Honey and Clover, where Hanamoto accuses Mayama of having more time to study shogi after stopping stalking Rika :)

  • I always liked Chess but was introduced to Shogi from the Anime: "Shion no Ou".

  • Me too. Shion is so great!!!!!!!!!

  • yup thats were i saw shogi the first time Naruto Shippuuden

  • lol same here

  • Hmm..I know Naruto shows shogi but I think the first time I remember seeing (myself) it was in Samurai Champloo which shows a more historical Japan more like the Edo era.

  • Would it be possible to add the original proverb in the comments, 日本語で? I can translate, I'm just curious what it is literally.

  • It's "両取り逃げるべからず".

Oh, I didn't know there's a scene of shogi in "エヴァンゲリオン". I think I watched all the episodes a long time ago, but I don't quite remember the story...

  • Yeah, in the Evangelion scene, the sharp sound of the Shogi pieces being moved can only be heard, and nothing is shown visually, so they may only be metaphorically used. Thanks for the response!

  • This scene was included in a few NGE fanfictions, but I'm afraid that many writers mistook the sound for Go pieces. Above all, if you seriously uphold the thesis of Commander Ikari and Deputy Commander Fuyutsuki playing merely "metaphorically", then uncountable questions will arise from the churchyard of millions of sacrificed social lives, the first one of which is: will mankind's fate ever be quite the same again?

14 years later, we are still light years away from sensing the truth behind Eva

  • Theres no bigger truth behind eva. Its post modern, it doesnt have to make sense.

failure to understand this will drive you insane

  • @osofrontinoquantico What's eva?

  • It's true that with the recent spotlight of Shogi in Naruto, especially in Shippuuden episode 82, there has been a significantly increase in Shogi interest by foreigners. I was a bit surprised too, at first. Ultimately, I think it will be the people that already play Western Chess that decide to commit to playing Shogi after a show like Naruto (or Shin Seiki Evangelion) facilitates its discovery.

  • Its interesting that you speak of this episode because of naruto i got stucked on shogi. Im happy that i found this video guide for my first steps in this exciting game. Thank you Hidatchi for this awesome guide im looking forward to buy a wooden set soon and will tell my friends about this nice strategy game :D

  • they play shogi in evangelion? when?

  • i actually got to know shogi because of naruto shippuden :P

  • vnanoさん、いつもコメント有難うございます。あれ、日本語話せるんですね・・・(^^;

    Lesson#13まであるはずですよ。その先も、まあボチボチ続けていきますんで、気長に見守って下さいm(_ _)m よろしくお願いします。

  • When foreigners are interested in shogi by this movie, I am glad.
