I have flown an RC plane, and can fly my proper one very well thanks. This thing was bodged together in about half an hour, has been broken and glued back together about 50 times, had a pent prop shaft, so it had no power, and had a massive heavy nicd that put the CofG way out, so trimming it out was impossible. It was just for a laugh. Also, the flimsy foam wings just twisted when it accelerated and it didnt respond to a single control input after that point.. hence the crash... :-)
I was thinking about doing this a while back when I was in high school. What I pictured in my head was a model rocket attached to a RC airplane. To up the excitement I also wanted to add a wireless camera to the plane to see where it was
Sorry mate.. I deleted your comment by mistake... Anyway - theres nowt wrong with getting excited about stuff.... much better than being a miserable git..
what you want for an engine is one that ends in 0 (zero)....that's the time delay between end of propulsion and the ejection charge going off (for popping a chute in a rocket or IGNITING A SECOND STAGE ENGINE *hint* :)....0 means no eject charge at all, so no reverse thrust.
You can disarm the ejection charge on an Estes engine by drilling a hole in the top of it through the cement-like covering and then pack it with flame proof wadding.
Bad idea to use estes rocket engine. The reverse charge will burn the foam. Hey! if you wana make a high explosive detonating rocket, buy 4 "D" engines. Unroll the outer layer of the rocket so the propellant is left. Crush the propellant into a fine powder and pack tight into the rocket you're gonna launch. Launch the rocket and it's the BEST! It's like a grenade. But you gotta do it right.
The other end of the rocket was vented, so it did no damage (unlike flying into the ground. )I'll give the dismantling thing a try.... thanks for the tip. I hope its not too much like a grenade tho or it could get expensive......:)
or you could jut buy a 1 lb jug of it at wal-mart for $12 cause all they are is black powder. Still low order explosive. You want HE, try dynamo, RDX, PETN, and such.
not me making all the noise.... thats my mate, the camera man. I'm the guy that sounds pissed I just crashed the plane. anyway, sod off you cheeky git!!! I'm not a geek :)
I'd done loads of flights with it at altitude, but you get no sensation of the extra speed, hence the low flight. Also, on this flight I had to use an overweight and under charged nicad, so the thing would barely fly at all, let alone get altitude... :)
We used a speed controller plugged into a switched channel. The first (cheap) one we tried always had 0.5V even in the off position, which was enough to set off the igniter, so we got a decent one that shuts right off to nothing.
The cheap one was unbranded that I took off one of those ready to fly cessna polystyrene thingys. The one that worked was a GWS I think. Its nice to have one you can trust when your messing around with those things!! Next job is to fire the rocket off the plane on a rail... :)
Its not a firework rocket its one of the ones you stick in those plastic rockets from the model shop, so it doesn't eplode at the end it just fires a small charge to fire the parachute. so it melts a bit, but no explosion.... :)
Yes Yes Yes! Wow, obsession.

Ya shooda pointed the nose UP. That way, gravity would have moderated the thrust and youda had more of a rocket than a plane that shed its wings.
Please do try again.

Yeah... we did that already several times. It just didnt look very exciting........

Cover the bottom of the wing with tape, add a carbon flat spar to the LE, and then try again ;)

you have done a great work, i would try a roket plane too, where have you bilanced the thrust?
zzMAXz 4 years ago
The rocket was mounted so that the line of thrust was aligned with the front wing. We mounted it in the fuselage at the bottom of the tail fin.
robnob2 4 years ago
What did you use to trigger the rocket motor? I assume it was on a seperate channel, but what was the trigger?
