  • Amazing that they all had their music memorized, and the saxes can double so quickly from sax to clarinet and back again. Sad that there are not more bands like this anymore. I heard a tribute to all women jazz bands of the 30s-40s on NPR just yesterday. It was a great segment and featured the sweethearts of rhythm mostly, mentioned several girl bands. This music should be brought back to everyone's attention that 'Yes' women can compete with men on all levels in life and these bands prove it.

  • My Aunt May played the horn in the Melodears... She let me play with her horn when I was a child. She unfortunately died very young. We don't have many pictures of her so thankyou for posting

    Nancy

  • Thanks! What was her name and what exactly did she play?

  • She went by the stage name May Navis her real name was May Navazio. She is the blonde lady playing the horn.

  • Which horn did she play? Trombone or Trumpet?

  • @pedaltonz Yes the blonde lady on trombone! My aunt May! :~)

  • I very much regret that there is so little evidence of her music and they are a great Orchestra - this female jazz band is very beautifull and they playing alltogether wonderful; especially Ina Ray Hutton is absolutely fascinating
