First they met in the colonies before they knew who they were or what their rival pilot looked like, and then they fought outside their mobile suits outside the Battle of A Boa Que.
You might even count it only as the second time since the first time they met they were more like passing strangers then people truly aware of each others identities.
Both Char and Amuro are very different people since then.

And Newtypes can be just as bad or good as everyone else: Paptimus Scirocco, and Haman Khan are among the biggest Gundam villains, and both are very powerful Newtypes.
Their "Newtypes" aren't the same as the UC versions, whom run the gamut from being incredibly powerful pilots, to just people who learn certain skills quicker, or even people who are no different from everyone else except that they can "detect" other Newtypes.
Furthermore, Newtypes aren't a special evolution: Crossbone Gundam makes it pretty apparent that they're just gifted freaks, not actually a new race of humanity, and humans need to work out their own problems.
Crossbone was a manga done by the creator of the series. Can be found online it's pretty sweet, though it sort of requires having seen the Gundam F91 film first.
And the bad guys don't win in the UC: it's more like the good guys don't win without a LOT of effort, because war always has human costs.
That Newtypes weren't actually any different then normal people at heart was supposed to sobering: people are just people, and you can't expect a race of supermen to fix things.
I guess the short version is yes: his theory basically said that one day people in space would become a new race of superior humans, peaceful and divorced from Earth's history of wars.
Haman Khan and Paptimus Scirocco basically showed us that Newtypes are just like regular people, but with unusual abilities.
The moral is that there isn't an easy way out of anything: everyone has to learn to live with everyone else, and no "new humanity" is going to fix the world's problems
@Zkration I agree, and Michael Kopsa was a better Char than Tom Edwards (though no one can beat the legendary Shūichi Ikeda). For a show that deserves a good English dub (many of the major and minor players in the Gundam universe are not of Japanese or Asian descent) so far there has not been one that sticks out as "amazing." Being Japanese myself, I grew up wondering why the ENTIRE Earth Federation (even the Americans) and Zeon spoke in Japanese, in the future are all other languages gone?
@terrarune Seed had a sex scene, I think that's why some people like it. Most of the altenate timeline stuff is not really good. I only like Wing because the mech designs and it gave me a glimpse into what Gundam shows were like but it was convoluted soap. The 1st season of Gundam 00 actually had the guts and balls to comment on current 21st century post 9/11 issues/politics but this was undone by the atrocious 2nd season. UC is great but novices need the alternate stuff to ease them in.

@karry299 i been to Japan. I talked to life long gundam otakus, they all agreed SEED was the worst of the franchise. They took a series that was targeted to the adult male demographic and made it kid friendly. Which is why many pre-teen girls love gundam seed. It sucks. i hear shinn asuka voice better on this series then in double zeta, gundam 0079,or chars counterattack.i know their same voice actors but that doesn't mean you should give up on trying to change your voice for a different character

Both he and Char were going to, but then Char's Counterattack got green lighted so the ending arcs of ZZ got re-written with them not in it, to leave more of them for the CC movie.
