Why all this comparing and bickering? JJ Cale wrote and recorded an incredible song and some other artists loved it so much they just had to play it. Instead of passing all this judgement.....get a guitar out and give it a go. Then post it.
@hammeron39 I'm an old musician/rec engineer myself (with almost every DAW and plugin known) and, still, the default of MY soul is an acoustic guitar and a moment in time.

Any time I watch Beck...even on his videos...he comes across as raw emotion. Even when his videos are accompanied by massive production like "Hell Yeah"...the effect I am left with leaves me feeling I have connected with him on an issue he feels.
I know that sounds preposterous but that's my opinion.

Agree. If there's such a thing as a definitive version of this J. J. Cale classic it's Poco's live performance at their 2004 Reunion Concert in Nashville. Paul Cotton will make you cry tears of joy.
I'm surprised nobody has recommended Poco's version of "Magnolia" with Paul Cotton on vocals and Rusty Young on steel. Soaring beautiful harmonies from these guys. No one does it better!! Check it out on youtube.
@popnutty Hate to pop yer bubble but the original was by JJ Cale, He wrote it and recoded it first. I am sure Poco did a sweet version but you gotta give credit where credit is due.
Its hard to screw up such a beautiful song, JJ Cale is a one of a kind songwriter. I think Beck does a fine job but for those not initiated with JJ Cale, the awsome feel of this song, the easy pace and almost lilting dreamlike feel of the song belongs to JJ.
@Cooleemee43 eh man,ok jjcale it's legendary but you could appreciate a song even it is not "the" original. buy beck's album and you will understand is better than jj cale! and if you dont like:Don't WATCH(SUCKER)
I believe it was just a nice off-the-wall cover he threw in...but I am no expert on Beck...Road To Escondido was also great because it brought Doyle Bramhall II to Clapton's band...I would hope people listening to that album would check out Doyle's playing and his brilliant songwriting and singing...

well he doesn't sound like his usual self that's for sure.. but Vedder? People say everybody sounds like Vedder.. but nobody really does to me. Vedder's voice is actually pretty unique. Nickelback,Creed,7 Mary Three.. people all said they sound like Vedder but do they really? It's sort of like saying "Tastes like chicken" but after you eat it a while you realize it doesn't :P
All the best songs are soul songs. Not necessarily soul - R'n'B soul - songs. Just songs you just know originated from deep within the song writers soul. This is one of them. Hats off to Beck for having the kudos to recognise this song and performing a lovely rendition of it.
Thank you Beck for awakening my soul and letting me see what Love and Life are ment for. Because of your soft song and heavy words, you allow me to think of Christ and what is my true purpose. if you have heard a whiporill sing, it is the absolutely most beautiful song, in the mountains of east tennessee, with the dogwood flower, the magnolia tree/flower is in south carolina....sweetest smell of life
Then you paid $300,000 to find out that L. Ron Hubbard is really god? How much did you spend before you got to the secret chapters about the spiders from Mars?
It really pisses me off when people compare cover versions to originals. He's up there paying homage to a great singer/songwriter for chrissakes. Kudos to Beck I say!

The guitar playing though: he hammers the catch-riff hook-run thing too much. Ease off - that's the beauty of the song - it leaves you wanting to hear that catch-riff again.

popnutty 1 year ago
@popnutty the original is by j.j. cale. poco covered it from him. it is from the album "jj cale-naturally". released early 70s
jj cale also wrote "cocaine".. many artists including clapton covered it.
in fact, a lot of jjs songs were covered by people and made famous by them,
yet, i think the originals are the best.. jj was a god.
this is a nice version by beck, he sings it well, the guitars rough, but the end guitar work is good. the original is on youtube, check it
