By the way, one of the central secrets of real success in Minoan Crete was that they really were not "interested" in the individual ego. Every person you see in their art is an individual, and yet there were NO KINGS or big chiefs---they did not "believe in" the lie of the "I" which Watts discusses so well here.
What we CAN do is carefully re-evaluate our track record, isolate the worst mistakes, and change accordingly. For example, ancient Minoan Crete (the start of the West) was thriving for over 1500 years of relative peace, progress and prosperity when bad luck took it down. That's where "life as war" began. I agree with most stuff he said, but I don't agree that we gotto stop trying to be square and we gotto stop squaring the world. Because what people are doing with the world is natural too, and nature actually can be cruel and bad and seriously very horrible sometimes to some creatures and some people. And even if we become extinct, then that is natural too. Just let everybody do what they do, but that shouldn't stop us from doing what we do. So if you wanna change or save the world, go ahead

instead of holding onto medieval stories which has obviously not done much for us except create war and hatred, why doesnt humanity embrace practical philosophy ?!! are we really so stupid?
@damaged01 I believe that in part you are correct. However, you must not forget that the powers that be wish to keep you in a stupid state. And boy, have they got the technology today! Much more so than ever before. The media are a class act for sure. Question. How do we get our information about the world? Well, through the media of course. Therefore, whoever controlls the media will become the 'Masters of Reality'. The problem is however, that the masters are crooks.
@CelticReject I completely agree with you. It's REALLY bad over here in the States. Our media seems to be set up to keep us distracted and at each others throats to keep our attention away from the issues that really matter as they actually are. The truly scary thing is that most people here are OK with that, so long as their consumer lifestyles aren't interrupted. Kept fat and happy the masses do not seem care about reality or truth.
@CelticReject While it may be true that the media holds sufficient power to shape how we see the world, it is a mistake to talk of the media and "the powers that be" as this one, ill-willed entity. That is not the case. "The masters" are not crooks because there are no masters to begin with. While some people hold vastly more power than others, the patterns of power exist beyond the will of any one group of people.

@znikacz I disagree. time is not an illusion per se so much as it is a construct that we create to make sense of something that is beyond our grasp. We chop things up in a linear fashion to give ourselves a sense of order because our puny ape brains are not capable of fully understanding that all things flow with no separation and all things are connected with no separation. All is one. One is all.

I AM Shocked! This stress and tension I always feel is my ego. That metaphor blew me away. I have always had the problem of not knowing who I am, which was translated to being shy and alway anxious. I am afraid of being a part of the whole because I am overconscious of my own ego and others. I am even writing because I. want more Watts
"the human race has come to a dead end", watts explains so many perpetual feelings and thoughts we have about the decline of the world in a very simple manner.
@EEPIIFFAANNY How you could take anything Alan Watts has to say as the mere bi product of an Ego and not Universally Applicable Insight is dumbfounding. I hope your Ego finds its way back past its own picket fences.
@dojonane ~~One day when you are past 15 and arrogant, maybe you won't be so dumbfounded by one who has taken Mr. Watts' own suggestion and have become, dis enchanted, even with Alan Watts. Or perhaps you could eat shit and go fuck yourself. If you don't like the expression of a contrary opinion posted, especially by one who has read every single book the son of a bitch has written and at one time, hung on every word, by all means, eat shit and die and go fuck yourself.
@EEPIIFFAANNY ...Otherwise, all that happens is that we all cut everybody else down, and we also cut ourselves down. Nothing ever measures up. Nothing is ever good enough. Honesty without kindness, humor and goodheartedness can be just mean. From the very beginning to the very end, pointing to our own hearts to discover what is true isn't just a matter of honesty but also of compassion and respect for what we see.
@dojonane ~~Why yes, quite, but do remember that this is it and to behold the spirit while you enjoy your joyous cosmology while knowing that there is a myth and ritual of Christianity which proves ever more eloquently that even the uncarved block and the unbleached silk point to the fact that just like the book against the taboo of knowing who you are that some people are just a little more full of themselves and others and to prove it, they presume to tell others how to empty themselves.
@dojonane~~Perhaps it would be more prudent to remove the beam from one's own vision before attempting to comprehend the mote in one's brother's vision, and especially, since I was only making my own private observation and not bothering to make a ripple in anything except for the extreme ripple that I made in your consciousness, exemplified by the advent of the comments proffered by you yourself, since the intentions of my remarks were to tell nothing but an observation
@dojonane~~of a broader interpretation of the observable phenomenon of life around me without emotional attachment. In other words, that I had found it necessary for Alan Watts to be a hero in the first place, though his writings have been helpful and influential to the paradigm, the prism through which I view reality, I can now say with hindsight that he was the hero of my youth, but I can now see with certainty that he was a self absorbed asshole. And if you don't like it,
@dojonane ~~ you could perhaps say to yourself, that was a provocative observation, I wonder how that guy reached that conclusion. But no, with all of the arrogance of a teenager or Alan Watts, you are certain that I must be the egomaniac, so instead of letting my observation be what it is, simply an observation, you have to continue to dog me with your remarks pertaining to what is most obviously the inner failings of a mental and emotional defective. So since that is the case, perhaps you
@dojonane ~ Perhaps you could take my original suggestion, supplied by the the philosophy of The Book, which observes that we are simply tubes that wear ourselves out over time with the precise activity that keeps us alive, namely eating at one end and shitting at the other, and Richard Alpert's "Be Here Now" and you could GO THE FUCK OVER THERE, FUCK YOURSELF AND EAT SHIT AND DIE.
@dojonane ~~Twasn't. Profane yes. But then again, what is sacred anyway? What is it with your inability to bugger off? Of course, if I wasn't so insanely drunk right now, I would probably see even deeper humor in the fact that the sacred Alan Watts died of alcohol poisoning, and that I am the alcoholic son of an alcoholic Episcopal priest who was himself friends with the late, great and amazing Alan Watts. Sorry for being so offensive. I have not been myself lately.
Wonderful, wonderful stuff. The best of western and Eastern thinking, and with a clear moral compass and passion. He reminds me of much of the teaching of the Alexander Technique.
sorry Al you lost me when you said "to meet some rather important people...people in the movie industry" ??
WRONG! Actors, movie moguls, celebrities etc are NOT important.
That's the biggest problem with people born in the US, they all think their movie industry is such a great contribution to the human race. When in fact it's not so far removed from people in the middle ages watching a cock fight. ITS JUST ENTERTAINMENT.
America has given us the atomic bomb and Tom Cruise.
What a refreshing sign! Alan reappearing to the current generation. He was a very instrumental guiding light for many in my generation and hopefully his spoken and written word and many books will also start reappearing. His 'message' and insights are crucial to the awakening the must occur if things are going to change. Welcome back Alan old friend, good to see you again!
the human race has to learn how to leave the world alone, and let what is called the natural homeostasis that is the self balancing process of nature, take care of the mess.
now how we going to do that?
good old alan, intentionally or not actually answered by making tea.
There are two theories in psychology that if combined prescribe the shedding of the ego. One theory states that our psychological health is dependent on creating congruence between our identities and reality. Another theory states that our fear of death causes the creation of the ego as a coping mechanism. So to reconcile the inevitability of our death with our psyches we must release our incessant grip on the ego... shed it if you will.
@formaldehyde28 I mainly got it from books on humanistic psychology. Consider the works of Carl Rogers (for the idea regarding congruence of self concept and reality), and the other theory is Terror Management theory created by Sheldon Solomon. (There's an odd phenomenon though that's almost paradoxical... in order to transcend the ego or become what Abraham Maslow called "self actualized" you must first embrace your ego and have self-confidence... but then again it's just a theory)
Alan is so succinct...each word is essential and deliberate. You can see him pausing to formulate his sentences. Nothing is without intent. What an example of awareness for us all
I just don't think his beliefs are "delusional" is all... far from it. But then again who has the right to say something is delusional or not? if anybody thinks someone does hold that right to label people with mental dysfunctions then they should watch the movie Neverwas.
Alan was certainly ahead of his time with this way of thinking. Also he was instrumental in bringing Taoist and other Eastern philosophies to the West. Thanks for the great upload!
@madhattery341 what makes you say that? Today, people are wasting their lives staring at computers- in '71, people were wasting their lives staring at televisions.
"words can never be the things they represent"-aldous huxley.
This sums up alan watts, but in an even more clear way. Once you realize this, you can begin to use your SENSES to experience the world rather than your intial WORDS that reshaped what you sensed into a different human idea
Before were able too get it right on the scale needed too make real change it will be too late we already have weather modifications and no one knows really the after effects of that ,bill gates has a patent on hurricane control. H.A.A.R.P which is experimenting with our ionospere plus lunatics for leaders.. seems too me humanity has already sealed our fate. i guess at least im aware even though i cant do anything about it.

god, this is fucking amazing. i don't have to be high to enjoy this (and i'm not). the way he linked letting go of our attempts to control the world with letting go of our attempts to control ourselves... i don't know how to describe this feeling, but i've had it some times before. i want to punch the air, just shout "yes!" what an amazing man.

I have read most of his books. He was the hero of my youth. What a self absorbed asshole. Talk about ego. I have never seen a bigger one in my life.
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@EEPIIFFAANNY How you could take anything Alan Watts has to say as the mere bi product of an Ego and not Universally Applicable Insight is dumbfounding. I hope your Ego finds its way back past its own picket fences.
dojonane 1 year ago

From the very beginning to the very end, pointing to our own hearts to discover what is true isn't just a matter of honesty but also of compassion and respect for what we see.
dojonane 1 year ago
@dojonane ~~Why yes, quite, but do remember that this is it and to behold the spirit while you enjoy your joyous cosmology while knowing that there is a myth and ritual of Christianity which proves ever more eloquently that even the uncarved block and the unbleached silk point to the fact that just like the book against the taboo of knowing who you are that some people are just a little more full of themselves and others and to prove it, they presume to tell others how to empty themselves.
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@dojonane~~Perhaps it would be more prudent to remove the beam from one's own vision before attempting to comprehend the mote in one's brother's vision, and especially, since I was only making my own private observation and not bothering to make a ripple in anything except for the extreme ripple that I made in your consciousness, exemplified by the advent of the comments proffered by you yourself, since the intentions of my remarks were to tell nothing but an observation
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@dojonane~~of a broader interpretation of the observable phenomenon of life around me without emotional attachment. In other words, that I had found it necessary for Alan Watts to be a hero in the first place, though his writings have been helpful and influential to the paradigm, the prism through which I view reality, I can now say with hindsight that he was the hero of my youth, but I can now see with certainty that he was a self absorbed asshole. And if you don't like it,
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@dojonane ~~ you could perhaps say to yourself, that was a provocative observation, I wonder how that guy reached that conclusion. But no, with all of the arrogance of a teenager or Alan Watts, you are certain that I must be the egomaniac, so instead of letting my observation be what it is, simply an observation, you have to continue to dog me with your remarks pertaining to what is most obviously the inner failings of a mental and emotional defective. So since that is the case, perhaps you
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@dojonane ~ Perhaps you could take my original suggestion, supplied by the the philosophy of The Book, which observes that we are simply tubes that wear ourselves out over time with the precise activity that keeps us alive, namely eating at one end and shitting at the other, and Richard Alpert's "Be Here Now" and you could GO THE FUCK OVER THERE, FUCK YOURSELF AND EAT SHIT AND DIE.
EEPIIFFAANNY 1 year ago
@EEPIIFFAANNY This is simply a discourse my friend. There is no need for profanity and death threats. Cheers.
dojonane 1 year ago
@dojonane ~~Twasn't. Profane yes. But then again, what is sacred anyway? What is it with your inability to bugger off? Of course, if I wasn't so insanely drunk right now, I would probably see even deeper humor in the fact that the sacred Alan Watts died of alcohol poisoning, and that I am the alcoholic son of an alcoholic Episcopal priest who was himself friends with the late, great and amazing Alan Watts. Sorry for being so offensive. I have not been myself lately.

despite the apparent size of the universe, even it is part of all else.
Thus one does not exist, for existing implies not-existing.
You can not not exist, even death will not remove you (the widest definition of the word you.)
There is just is-ness

sorry Al you lost me when you said "to meet some rather important people...people in the movie industry" ??
Thanks!

What a refreshing sign! Alan reappearing to the current generation. He was a very instrumental guiding light for many in my generation and hopefully his spoken and written word and many books will also start reappearing. His 'message' and insights are crucial to the awakening the must occur if things are going to change. Welcome back Alan old friend, good to see you again!

the human race has to learn how to leave the world alone, and let what is called the natural homeostasis that is the self balancing process of nature, take care of the mess.
now how we going to do that?
good old alan, intentionally or not actually answered by making tea.

i would say r.i.p but your probably travelling thru the infinite as i write this.

Freemanoftheland128 1 year ago
There are two theories in psychology that if combined prescribe the shedding of the ego. One theory states that our psychological health is dependent on creating congruence between our identities and reality. Another theory states that our fear of death causes the creation of the ego as a coping mechanism. So to reconcile the inevitability of our death with our psyches we must release our incessant grip on the ego... shed it if you will.
sleepyeyeguy 1 year ago
@sleepyeyeguy That's really interesting, where did you get that information from? I'd like to read more on that.
formaldehyde28 1 year ago
@formaldehyde28 I mainly got it from books on humanistic psychology. Consider the works of Carl Rogers (for the idea regarding congruence of self concept and reality), and the other theory is Terror Management theory created by Sheldon Solomon. (There's an odd phenomenon though that's almost paradoxical... in order to transcend the ego or become what Abraham Maslow called "self actualized" you must first embrace your ego and have self-confidence... but then again it's just a theory)
sleepyeyeguy 1 year ago
Alan is so succinct...each word is essential and deliberate. You can see him pausing to formulate his sentences. Nothing is without intent. What an example of awareness for us all
