@XenovannHellwolf I was going to film the week my wife and both older daughters had the monthly visitor at the same time, but it was just too gruesome.
As I recall the "sideshow freaks" of old didn't consider themselves to be exploited. One, their shows provided a job where careers by and large were closed off to them. Second, they made very good money at what they did.
Despite the kinda terrible effects, its too ba that people now in days cant see this kind of good and freash stuff. EVERYBODY WHOS READING THIS! Isnt it sad that everything is a remake?
This was a pretty bad movie with one of the GREATEST movie soundtracks of all time - from the great Basil Kirchin.
The opening credit sequence of this truly goofy movie has got to be one of the most beautiful scenes in any movie ever / coupled with the exquisite music. They should have just extended THAT for 90 minutes.
Wow. Too bad this trailer was infinitely better and 90 minutes shorter than my moviegoing experience at THE MUTATIONS yesterday. Almost walked out. Unwatchable and unenjoyable, from one of the most groundbreaking cinaesthetic minds of 20th century art. Pffffffffffft. What? Went? This? Wrong?
The political correctness in these comments is sickening, people are so full of themselves and riddled with imaginary guilt they can't even loosen up to enjoy a good ol' exploitation film, geez! That was one awesome trailer!
I agree. This was one in the line of many, for many years of horror exploitation flicks in the 70's form Britain and the USA. When I was 7,8,9 years old, they were rolling these films out every week - and I wanted to see them! Maybe these posters will understand in 30 years when that generations starts laughing at Transformers 2, Avatar, The Last Airbender, et. al. Then they'll get "it".
@goldenagenut Yes I agree. Ever met someone that volunteers at a clinic for people with severe deformities and crippling diseases? They are the least politically correct people in the world. It's how they get by. You can tell a person has never had to deal with anything if they are extremely sensitive about this shit.
Guys Guys. With the whole "exploitation" wave of deformed people in older films you have to understand that films like these gave these people a nice living and I'm sure the filmmakers were gratefull to have them on board. Rondo Hatton was quite a looker but was exposed to mustard gas and got acromegaly, he stared in many horror films as The Creeper and he was very greatful that his films helped his life and he had a small cult following. It's the same thing as vertically challenged people.
What we may not be comfortable with or what we perceive as exploiting those with deformaties..may be the opposite of what the actors felt or feel to this day. They were not forced to do the picture and with the climate the way it is in film today you can bet another film like this will never be made again. Try to appreciate it for what it is..entertainment.. and also a part of film history that is now gone and will likely never return.
And even if there was a director and a group of people with unfortunate deformities got together and made a film, there would be an uproar of complaints. Shame people don't realize that controversy is good publicity, esspecially when your film is good.
@TheForgottenFlesh you make a very good point. It reminds me of a TV special about sideshow people from the shows in the 1930's. The shows were eventually stopped by do-gooders to the considerable outrage of the people actually in the shows. To paraphrase what one said, "It was in the Great Depression, lots of people with normal bodies didn't have work, and here all we had to do was just sit around and let people gawk at us. We got well paid and well fed for it."
Great makeup on that first guy... this movie is one I have to see... its antiquity makes it scarier to me, but that does suck that most of these people who were deformed were exploited for a thrill...
the big difference is that the people in "freaks" were treated with respect, here, with a plot of mutating people---with plants!-real people with deformaties are shown off as monsters.
