It's easier than you would expect playing a roll with one hand to be but, like all techniques, it has its difficulties.
As mentioned in the video, the first note is a down stroke that uses the rim to push the stick back up. The second note is simply the result of me lifting my hand back up for another go.
Also, check out Johnny Rabb, he has some excellent videos on this technique :)
Wow. As I am starting to refine my skills after 20 years of playing, I stumbled on to this video. Now in my 20 years of playing I have not practiced enough. I should be making Alex van halen look like a school boy....not the case!!! I am a decent drummer with excellent timing and a knack for double bass. My question is; Can this be applied to tom rolls??
It can indeed. There are some limitations though depending on which tom you are playing. Take a look at my video on push / pull technique to see a demonstration of this technique on other drums / cymbals and other one handed roll type techniques. I discuss the pros and cons of each technique.
I dont get how you can do that so fast with the video showing that your hand barely moves. I was wondering what I was doing wrong, I didn't know you had to put the stick to the rim, I do now. Thanks!!!
lolololol thats cool as i can sorta get it but my stick keeps hitting the rim on my drum (i got a metal rim) so idno if thats right or not cas u hear the rim with the hit can u correct me if im wrong?
As mentioned in the video, the stick should hit the rim and the drum at the same time on the first note. This effectively "drowns out" the sound of the rim and keeps the roll sounding even. Many of my students get a problem with too much unwanted rim noise if they try to speed it up too quickly.
I advise to spend some time playing the first and second notes over and over at a slower tempo in order to make sure the first note hits the drum and the rim at the same time.
Thanks man, Ive been doing this technique for about 5 years but it didn't take that long to master the basic one handed roll effect. Playing more complex rhythmic patterns is still a work in progress but most drummers would agree, the freehand technique is much easier than it looks.

Me again. That is tougher than it looks. I can't get the second pop. Is it leveraged off the rim?. I'll watch the vid again.
