I'm reading the biography and boy was this guy a womanizer. He also had OCD...BIG TIME! Love it. I loved his manager who did damage control every time Frank cheated on his wife or pissed off the soldiers. He was a draft dodger too. LOL! But, he was an amazing artist, and with all his faults, he was very loyal to his fans, very generous with his money, and fought against racism. Wish he did that for the women's movement instead of perpetuating his misogyny. Saw him in 1979. Loved the concert.
I was thinking this was another song and I was just about to click out of it, and then ol' blue eyes' smooth croonin' just sucked me in. Sing it Frank!!!!
I think the pianist is none other than the composer of the song, Harold Arlen. A very special TV appearance of Frank. Most recent biography has it that he cut his left wrist and was taken to the hospital for treatment just weeks before this appearance when he realized Ava wasn't coming back to him. He also hadn't been awarded the Academy Award so he was considerably depressed. Still, he shines on this recording.
Interesting time for Frank. Sounds great here. Seems like he's right in the middle of his two styles (crooner vs. swinger), leaning towards the true 1950's swinger I love so much. I never knew he was doing "World On A String" with more-or-less the famous arrangement this early. Is this really 1953? Thanks for posting.
Very interesting to see this...this is way before he recorded it in 1961 with Don Costa--that looks like Harold Arlen, who wrote the music, playing the piano!!!
I just looked at this video, a video from Sinatra singing Rain or Shine in the seventies. And then in 1994 in one of his last official concerts. The transition is amazing. Take a look, if you can find them.
Notice the difference between Sinatra a decade earlier and the way he is in this clip. He's putting it in your face now with no apologies, sort of like Ali after knocking out Foreman when he said, "Everybody stop talking now! Attention!"
What does politics have anything to do with his work... and to let you know he always conservative but at the time when he voted democrat they democratic party was conservative... Like FDR Truman JFK and then he started by supporting Nixon so please learn your facts before you make an ignorant comment again you just sound like a biggot
Sinatra was not "Conservative" until 1972. In 1968, he supported Hubert Humphrey, a liberal. JFK was NOT a "Conservative"! He ran against Nixon, who definitely was. You do not know your politics (or Sinatra's politics) and probably get your news only from the FOX network and other conservative sources. But, if you dig Frank Sinatra, politics don't matter - it's the MUSIC that counts. Thanks for reading!
I think before you make a statement like you did in your last sentance you should read my whole comment... I said his politics have nothing to do with his work... 2nd You NEED TO LEARN POLITICS YOU CAN BE A CONSERVATIVE AND BE A DEMOCRAT AND A LIBERAL A REPUBLICAN! So listen up I am sure you are some 15 year old who doesnt know their ass from their head and hasn't seen anything minus about life rather than what you see on the news so listen up... Sinatra was always conservative Kennedy was
was a conservative democrat his policy in modern era would be moderate republican. More importantly Sinatra only voted for JFK in 60 and then after hosting the Kennedys he was not invited to the Presidential ball and would not support him so in 64 and then on he supported the Republican party... He was also quoted saying that as time goes on parties views change and mine are the same but are no longer democratic. Thank you! If you dig Blue eyes you might want to read more about him
Every Sinatra book out there will tell you that Sinatra campaigned for FDR in '44, and FDR was hardly a conservative. Sinatra campaigned for Hubert Humphrey in '68. Again, not a conservative candidate, and AFTER 1964. Read ANY Sinatra bio, including "American Legend" written by Nancy Sinatra, and you will find that Sinatra's politics were quite liberal until after 1968. I take it that you are a conservative, and want your politics to match Sinatra's, and they probably do, but after 1968.
Anyway, you can go ahead and get the last word in. This song clip ain't the forum for a political debate, and I realize I should not have taken your bait, nor should you have taken Donovan68's bait. Better to just enjoy the music. : )
Well either way there is no point in arguing as you said, I personally do not believe in politics I dispise both parties and am strongly against the two party system... But lets agree that Sinatra was amazing and his music will live forever!
Very good question, this was filmed a good 7 years before his studio recording of "Come Rain or Come Shine". I don't think he ever recorded it with Columbia before then...
@MiscVideos78rpm my guess is late 30's maybe 38. I believe this was when he was at the bottom of his popularity, and with Ava. Frank was hated by the public before he went to Capital Records. In fact the criticism around him only subsided partially when he passed on. They are still writing crap about him to this day. Just pick any of the half assed biography that are put out every year.
@SWISSCOLORVISION You're right. This was recorded soon after Sinatra was signed to Capitol. He had just gotten together with Nelson Riddle. Hence, the very early version of the World on a String arrangement heard here. Sinatra had just started to work his way back into popularity with the public.
@rbratcherjr Actually he did record it sometime at Columbia, not sure what year, but it can be found on iTunes on the album The V Discs: The Columbia Years 1943-1952.
@joemoe23 actually buble is phenominal, not as good as sinatra, but then hes younger. to be honest i think everyone should just be pleased that there is someone in the charts with talent and keeping big band alive
Actually, this isn't from the Frank Sinatra Show - it looks like a Colgate Comedy Hour show (one where Eddie Cantor, NOT Martin & Lewis, hosted.) And the piano player is none other than Harold Arlen - composer of the songs Frank is singing, not to mention "One For My Baby", "Over the Rainbow" and a whole lot more.
I cannot give you an exact answer to that because I do not know the year of the show. I assume it is 1951. If it is, then he would be 34-35 years old.

Music is one of the mysteries existent between Earth and Heaven.
Particularly I think music is the most reliable and sure fire way to get in touch with the Gods of the Universe, mainly when sung by Sinatra. I am sure that when he passed away his soul was turned into the score of a beautyful heavenly song.
I'm a black guy who loves all the great black singers of the American Songbook. Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Arthur Prysock and many, many more. But, to my ear, Sinatra was the best. The closest to him was Nat Cole or maybe Tony Bennett but Sinatra was still the champ. His interpretations of many of these great songs are considered to be the definitive versions. Miles Davis and Duke Ellington, just to name 2 guys, thought he was the best. I have to concur. And I KNOW this music.
Yes, he was. He really made popular singing what it is today. The way singers approach ballad singing is all influenced by Sinatra's example. Yeah, Elvis admired Roy so much, he gave him one of the songs he himself was going to record in Memphis in 1969. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was.

Hahahaha! The only one who could be called a contemporary of Sinatra in that group is Nat "King" Cole. The rest never ventured into his range of music. You may know music but your range seems to be limited considering the people you just listed. And when you're talking about Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, there is no "idol" status. I'd say great respect but not idol since they both started the same time. Idol often refers to someone who came before.
It's not ‘Come Rain Or Shine’. FS sings medley of some songs, including ‘Black magic’, ‘I’ve got the world on a string’ etc.
