You need to have your pattern set up, so that you can play a triplet note and a quarter note. Normally when you set that up, the number of rows in your pattern will be a multiple of both 3 and and whatever the shortest note you intend on playing (usually 4, 8, or 16).
For brevity, let's say your pattern has (3 x 4) 12 rows. This makes it easy for you to play triplets and quarters....
So, in your first channel, you'd play the quarters on rows 0, 3, 6, and 9. In the next channel, you'd play triplets on rows 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Then play that back (you'd have to slow the tempo so you can make out the beats).
It usually helps to have a very short note, like a 16th, as a sort of "metronome channel", then make your pattern a multiple of 3 x 16 = 48 rows (48, 96, etc.). Play the metronome every 3rd note. (The metronome would be your 16th note.)...
If you make something in Famitracker, let me know. I've never really used it, but it emulates the NES audio, which is cool. Sounds almost like the real thing.
brumster225 - It's not too difficult to use, but that's just me. When I started out, the program interface was so "wide" (lol) and cumbersome. Quite a bit to take in at once. But, having an understanding of music, I think, makes it much easier to understand.
pcgeekman - An overclocked NES? Heh! The changes in key and tempo were inspired by a commercial for a Super Mario game a while ago.
You can make it play the current row by clicking the Play Row toolbar button (just left of the red circle Record button), or by pressing Ctrl + Enter.
You can see all the key configurations in the Setup window, by clicking View from the main menu, selecting Setup, then clicking the Keyboard tab.
The play row action, in particular, can be found by selecting "Pattern Editor - General" from the category drop-down, and "Play Row" is in the bottommost section.

how did you get the triplets to work? I'm learning famitracker and I've been curious if it'd work for it

Hey untamedfrikkle. Thanks for the question.

Usually, a 16th would be enough; it allows you to properly hit triplets, quarters, halves, wholes, eighths, and sixteenths.
In my tune, they're not exactly triplets. If you listen carefully, they're slightly off, but most people probably won't notice. :-P
Hope that helps, and makes sense. If not, let me know. Sorry if it's too wordy.
Also, it could easily work for Famitracker as well. (-:

Hey.
hitmenow - Thanks, but it's not in the "wrong" key, as I have transposed the tune. Therefore, it is in a "different" key. :-|
Furthermore, the transposition was inspired by a commercial that Nintendo released some time ago, that had an upbeat tempo and transposed tune.
mista405 - Yes. :-P
holyguitar90 - I used the then ModPlug Tracker, now called OpenMPT.
