You didn't have a TV (in nearly ALL cases) - you had a radio, cards, stickball, boardgames and your imagination.

You didn't worry that the government was going to take your rights away, you looked up to the government because it protected you.

You didn't have technology of convenience, you had the movie theatre, plays, and friends.

@DanielKnyphausen that's a polite way to view the times. At the time, economy was in the ruts, jobs were hard to find, gangsters appeared and organized crime became what it is today. If you were a minority, you were likely to be screwed over by society, blacks more so. On the other hand, society was indeed less vulger and more social, idiot celebrities did not have a bigger influence then your kids, and Taxes were hardly noticable unlike today.
