I`m 52 and bought a piano 4 days ago and am going to learn to play. This is one of my favourite Black Crowes songs. You sound great and this serves as an inspiration to me. Thank you. Coming over from Wales to see them in San Francisco in December. They are such a cool band.

Thanks man! I started by putting very small portions of songs on repeat over and over until I could pick things out and play it. Try using some music editing software to splice very small portions, then put it on repeat on an ipod or computer or something. Then sit down and fiddle with the notes until you get it. Then move to the next part. If you practice enough, your ability to play by ear will improve dramatically.

That is fair. I've often tried to analyze the "strain" you speak of, and I know what you're talking about. Since this was improvised, I know that is part of it. But it would be nice to approach a point with total ease at improv. I would also note that in my experience, it helps to have an acoustic piano with keys weighted lighter than than ones on my digital piano. However, recording quality would suffer (with amateur means). The "strain" is something I haven't figured how to overcome.

this is what I believe. you shall not think when You're playing, you shall play. the more you play the piano the more secure you will become on the keys. so my advise is, practice a lot and u'll soon come to a point where the music starts to come from your "soul".

i got to agree with what dax says about just doing and not thinking. i play guitar and i'm at an intermediate level and sometimes while practicing certain songs etc i've caught myself play through something that i would've stumbled on a few dozen times earlier that night. it's like when you dont think about it that it just comes out on it's own.  sometimes it really does feel like it's coming right outta your soul.

Interesting thoughts. The video here is mostly improvised with only some chord notation written down. I suppose improvising it over and over would have a similar effect to practicing sheet music. One would find certain "patterns" that work and keep with the melody, and would play them with more ease with more practice. I lose my attention span too easily. lol
