Beautiful song and she does it well. However, this is truly a song that only Hazel Dickens can really pull off. This version doesn't have the haunting and painful tone like Dickens.
I just saw Kathy for the 2nd time, this past Friday, in Lakeside, Ohio. Wonderful. Truly one of the best performers around. Few people could pull off a concert like that, and have the encore be 'Black Lung' --accapella. Her voice was as fresh as if she had opened the show with it. If you get a chance to see her, take it. The 'Coal' cd is a must-have.
All of us from W.Va. have been talking music and politics.....Afellow W. Va native who has put her talent and passion toward helping our miners.Love her passion
This song always takes me back to a time when I was just becoming aware of the miners & the lives that they lived.....Hazel Dickens wrote this song for her brother.
@hillbillyclimber EXACTLY! That's what I like about classic singers better than singers today. Probably the reaason why they crank songs up so loud at concerts is so you can't hear their crappy singing. Haha.. Most artists that I've seen today live you can't reallly tell if they're good singer or not anymore, because they crank the acoustics so loud you can't hear what they're singing.. There's been some good ones but then also there's been a few bad.
blacklung is a fact of life for miners...my family is full of miners....they are tough people...i dont know her personaly but i know shes from wv where coal is king....this song is true to her heart...but im proud of my coal mining family
Glad I heard this on the radio a couple of weeks ago, stopped me in my tracks.Since booked tickets to see Kathy in Jan, having never heard of her before. Agree with
bangwezl-ritwingr, you are a son of a bitch.
I'm from a coal mining family in South Wales (that's in Britain for all you ignornant people) and am very proud of my roots. Sadly, we don't have much of a coal industry left - thanks to rightwingers and economic ignorance.
However, those roots go deep and remain underground!
What are "lefty friends" and what makes you think that she would have the mines here to shut down? I've heard no talk of our Kentucky mines shutting down. In fact, clean coal processing has boosted the production and the mines are working steady. Are you just talking or do you know something we don't??
You could always get underground and mine it yourself if you don't want to freeze and be in the dark...or wait you still would be freezing in the dark mining coal. Better yet, just chop off the mountaintop and leave it barren and riddle with toxic chemicals so you can be warm and cozy while those in the coal fields suffer.
God Bless the miners and their families. What a powerful song. I know my Daddy and Grandpa would have loved this. God Bless and keep you all. Daughter of a W Va coal miner.
Why is it that coal miners cannot get the benifits they deserve from this deadly disease known as black lung. My father has tried on many occasions and has been turned down every time. The doctors says his lungs are full of it but when he goes for the tests he gets turned down. Guess the company Dr's are the ones mostly to blame since they are paid off. Guess they would rather see a druggie get benefits instead of a miner. Go figure.
Yes, Hazel Dickens wrote this, after her brother died of Black Lung. You can hear her perform and talk about it on the Appalshop video "It's Hard to Tell the Singer From the Song", about Hazel that's just being rereleased on DVD. Great to hear this song being performed!
This is by far one of the best acappella songs I have ever heard. It just oozes with emotion and soul. Kathy used to perform an acappella song with her band but that was a few years ago. I hope to catch one of her concerts this year. What a voice!!
Nice rendition of one of the most emotional songs I have ever heard..I think Hazel D. wrote this in memory of her brother, but I'm not sure why I think this. Anyway your version is very soulful.
i love kathy and all of her songs...

Kathy's music is an inspiration to me, and it speaks to a part of my life that I don't share with a lot of people.
Thank you for this. It was beautiful.

Only someone as talented as Kathy Mattea could pull this off. It takes ALOT of talent to sing a song this powerful in acappella.
