i learnt it after about 8-10 (im not sure exactly haha) months of playing guitar. Took me a few hours to be able to do it porperly. Ive been playing for 1 year now, and i havent progressed to anything like this, but im playing stuff like the hot for tecaher intro

nice lick. but i hate the term "shred". its so degrading in terms of musicality as it suggests technique and speed before the actual music itself

Shredding is a term coined to describe the application of absolute fretboard dominance, there is nothing degrading about that. It's not the word shred, it's the people who dedicate themselves to learning how to shred so much so that they lose sight of WHY they want to (to make music) that are the problem - they seek shred skills like it is the holy grail when in reality its merely another road for people to take on their journey to musical utopia :) the word 'shred' is not good or bad!

Tommy, you obviously havent tried very hard to find (yes I will call them shredders) shredders who make beautiful music. just because you make a negative association with the word shred doesnt mean the rest of us do. check out shawn lane, john petrucci, paul gilbert, steve vai, goncalo perrera, eric johnson, yngwie (sometimes) .... not to mention all the great shredders here on youtube.
