Even a 1 minute recording sends shivers down ones spine, such passion emoted in such a short recording just proves how great he was, the opera world was robbed of what would have been the most dramatic passionate tenor ever heard or seen. Other tenors may have been a little more technically trained but Mario was unique and gave everything to his adoring public, any doubts watch his performance from the LOndon Palladium in 1957 for absolute proof.
Based on my limited 2D exposure, it seems he's got no problems in terms of technique and range (in comparison to the hooted, throaty and pushed sounding hispanic tenors). The timbre of his voice is lovely. For some reason he reminds me of the young Pava but such a comparison would be unfair for both Pava and Calleja. If he's got enough zeal and industry, he'd make his mark in the opera world. I sense a great potential in him. Let's hope for the best.
I heard Calleja in London in 2006 at St John's Smith Square and was hugely disappointed. There was something lacking though I admire his technique and the way it reminds us of a puted Golden Era. I have also heard Aragall, Pavarotti, Domongo and Carreras live and although I am very appreciative of Calleja, I will not praise his uncritically because vocally and technically I have heard better
Yoni; Where in the world did you ever get this recording? I thought i had every-thing Mario ever recorded but i've never heard this before it was just amazing as always even though he crooned down at.59 his voice was clear, piercing and full.. simply the best. Ty so much for posting this rarest of gems
God, the Great Mario lanza. If he ever got a chance to start his full opera stage carrer, he would have been one of the greatest of the Met and beyond.
I do not think I ever heard this in youtube or elsewhere. Another fantastic song by the inimitable and unique Mr. Lanza Thanks very much for yet another jewel
Listening to his purity of tone and his confidence of voice on this recording compared to others that were in Serenade, it makes me wonder this one was cut...
Also, it is testament to his ability to have sung the role of Cavaradossi!!

Mario Lanza aveva una voce d'oro. Peccato che è morto giovanissimo...riposa in pace caro Mario....

Indeed. :)
By the way, have you had an opportunity to hear J. Calleja live?
ShawDAMAN 3 years ago 17
Not yet. But it's on my agenda. So far I like him (based on limited 2D exposure). I am anxious how he sounds in 3D and in a role.

It would have been awesome to hear him sing 'O dolci mani'

A revelation! I was not aware that Lanza had recorded this. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.

Never heard this before and didn't know he'd recorded it. Magnificent! What a Cavadossi he'd have made.
