...benefit of the major repairs such as the cost of a new engine, trans, differential. This only gets you down the road until the next major repair is needed. I know, I have been down that road myself. If the car is totalled then you get book value. When you say enough is enough, you get nothing on a trade, it sits on you driveway, anybody interested wants to pay a few dollars and gets mad because the car was actually used, not preserved in showroom condition for 27 years.
Nice car, these old G.M. rwd 80's cars are practically indestructible. But, at 150, 000 plus miles, how much longer will it run before it needs major repairs. This is the trap people fall into when they buy high mileage used cars. You buy the car, maybe at a deal, but then repairs are needed. And then more.. until the total is 4, or 5 thousand dollars. You still have an old car with way too much money spent on it. You never see the money on a trade, nor do you ever get the full...
Its true, that the Car dealers were marking up cars for the clunker program. The owner of this car probably could have sold this to you for 2000.00, went to the dealer with cash in hand, and got a better deal than the cash for clunkers deal would have gotten them.
@Capricious9C1 Your best bet would be to ask someone in a southern state or a place like California.
That said, after many years of not seeing very many of these cars, I have noticed more of them on the roads and being offered for sale at used car lots. Most are in excellent condition. I wonder if they were owned by elderly people who became unable to drive.
My father and I have had 6 of these 1977-1989 B-Body Pontiacs and all were great reliable cars..My current version is a white 1986 Parisienne Brougham
@solo2vette They really are great cars, and as of late, I've seen quite a few of them peeking out here and there. Most have been in excellent condition.
What a shame this country blames a noble OLD car such as this for their glut of 6000 SUVs and Pickups....even without great technology these old behemoths would equal the mpg of the newer pickups
@solo2vette What I'd really like to see--and do, if I were any kind of machinist and had the money to throw it at--is one of these cars retrofitted with a modern engine and drive train. I suspect it could be done, and it would be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes, just as a test.
There will probably never be cars like this again, and that makes me very sad. As I've said elsewhere, I will have one, and nobody will ever take it away.
I just bought one today, a light blue 1985 Pontiac Wagon.. it runs and drives like a dream. I will never give this gem up! I paid a few hundred. Sweet ride.
If I was in the market for a family vehicle or something with lots of cargo space, I'd rather have a station wagon than anything else. I want RWD though, the way good station wagons used to be built. This vehicle would be more appealing to me than anything built today - and it's obviously a lot cheaper. Such a shame that it got destroyed.
All CFC was, is a bailout for GM and the UAW. Fact one, like it or not, the truth is in front of your faces. GM has built total crap after 1990, fact two, like it or not. The Volt and vehicals like it will have as much success as Obama in 2012...................
@daewooparts While I would have loved to see it go to a good home--or at least to someone who could get some use out of it--if there was no other option than for it to be destroyed, I'd have much rather seen it go out fighting...
Nice wagon - that would have been a great family car or church youth/small group vehicle (better mileage than a van or bus for youth trips) heck - you can put a 4x8 foot sheet of wood or dry wall in the back w/ the seats down :-) do that with a Taho
You see what a WASTE this program is? My Alcoholic, Crack Head neighbors, who are Already on EVERY kind of Gov’t Handout could’ve used a NICE, BIG CLUNKER to Drive around in so They’d be SAFE when they run into something. I’m SURPRISED the Pres. Didn’t think of this; These are His “Peeps”.
Cars such as a Parisienne in such great shape would be appreciated much more than any Kia or Hyundai. Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it--such is the case once again with embracing government programs.
“Morning Sir.” “Mo'ning; What'cha got?” “Cash4Clunkers was a HUGE success!” “It was?” “Oh Yes Sir! With all of the money we borrowed from China to buy cars from Japan & Korea; Their economies are Right Back on Track!” “So?” “Don't you see Sir? Soon they'll Buy Up all of OUR available Real Estate; It's called Trickle Down Sir. And Sir, Please Make Sure you BOW when you meet them; they don't like shaking our hands.
Back in Japan: Joshi - "Grandfather, when will we take Revenge on the Americans for Hiroshina?" "Even now my son, they are Destroying Their cars & have Borrowed HUGE sums of Money from China, to buy cars from Us & the Koreans." "How will that benefit us?" "We have included a Destruct circut in the ignition systems of all of the cars we sell them; a few went off Early by accident, but when the time comes ALL of them will go off at the same time & we shall have our revenge".
You know what? We're all blaming Obama for being an idiot and proposing the cash for clunkers, but in his defense, how the fuck was he supposed to know there are people out there, stupid enough to trade in cars like this, or much, MUCH nicer, cleaner cars for a pathetic $4500 DISCOUNT on a NEW car that'd depreciate about the same amount in a week?
People are fucking stupid. Don't blame Obama. Wouldn't you propose such a program for people who're making due with really really old shitty cars?
@wildbloodydragon most people cant afford a car payment - most city people dont even own a car and most middle class people cant afford a car payment any more because theres no jobs that pay much over $9.00 per hour any where unless you want to be a teacher or cop - oh crap they are loosing their jobs around here too... so now we have nearly NO sub $5k family vehicles like SUVs and Vans and few sub $5k cars and to top it off - no freeking jobs so: epic fail
@wildbloodydragon kind of like the last pres with the war - seemed like a simple thing but turned out to have long term problems... not to get into politics - ug politics....
@mustang633NY - The previous President had nothing to do with conducting the war on terrorism. That was approved by Congress and the war on terrorism is going to be long and hard fought. We knew that going in. But it's better than having thousands of innocent people did in more World Trade Center like attacks.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 my thoughts exactly - keep the fight over there so they cant get us again.... but even though i supported bush in many of his ideas - i do whish we had a better plan for iraq back in 2002 when we went over there.. as do we all im sure
@JohnQuincyAdams1 First, it's not better. The number of Americans killed during this pointless war is more than the people killed in 9/11.
Second, it won't prevent the next attacks. Do you know what caused the attacks in the first place? Hatred. We go into these countries and kill millions of people who WE consider to be "terrorists". Why would they not hate us? They have every right to.
If we stop fucking with other countries, we will be much more secure.
@wildbloodydragon - I don't see any, "good intentions", with this failed cash for clunkers bologna. It was just pure socialism, "spreading the money around", taking from the poor and giving to the rich! In a democracy, a free society, the government has no business in screwing around with the economy and people's money. For over 234 years, American soldiers have been dying on the battlefields to defend FREEDOM in this great country we have, not the chains of SOCIALISM!
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Obama is as far as socialism as it gets. He just agreed to extend tax cuts for people making $250K and above for another two years, which adds $70 billion added to our deficit.
Cash for Clunkers was only there to make a market for new cars. In effect it was an indirect bailout for big corporations. Nothing socialist about that one either.
@wildbloodydragon - My friend, I know exactly what I am talking about. Do you? Obama-nation was *forced* to agree to the Pres.Bush tax cuts *for all Americans* by a Republican majority Congress, which was the elected will of the people. Obama-nation didn't want to do it, rest assured. Tax cuts don't add to the national debt, as they spur economic growth with *increases* tax revenues. *Spending* is what adds to the national debt and Obama-nation has spent more than *all Presidents combined*!
@wildbloodydragon - "Spreading the wealth around", via the failed cash for clunkers is very much socialism, however in this case it was stealing from the *poor* and giving it to the *rich*! Instead of providing a 41,500 gift of taxpayer money to people who could afford a new car, it would have been far more effective and in keeping with *freedom* of they just had cut taxes $1,500 for every American and let *the people* decide what they needed, be it a car, home improvements, or what have you! 9
First, socialism is a very complex economic system far from a reality even in so-called socialist countries. Get this retarded idea that anyone could get us even close to it out of your head. Don't even say that word again until you have a clear idea what "socialism" means.
Second, the money went straight into corporate pockets. The money was paid to the dealers. People did not receive a dime, they got a "discount". Again, nothing to do with socialism.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Spending and cutting taxes BOTH will obviously contribute to deficit.
Taxes: Republicans risked tax cuts for 98% of the country, along with unemployment benefits, took them hostage, only to gain tax cuts for people who absolutely don't need it, the top 2%.
The top 2% make nearly 30% of the wealth in the US. What do you think cutting taxes for these few people will do to the budget?
Spending: Republicans fully support spending 750 billion a year on the war. Go figure.
@wildbloodydragon - Cutting spending will reduce the deficit and cutting taxes will increase the volume of taxes collected, by putting more people to work and they will pay income taxes. This has been historically proven over and over. 90% of the taxes in the U.S. are paid by the top 10% of the wage earners. Slightly more than 50% of the citizens pay no income taxes at all. How is this fair? How does this stimulate the economy? It doesn't. Is spending money on the war on terrorism an option?
@wildbloodydragon - It is the case. The rich generally don't get tax refunds, because they are smart enough not to overpay on their taxes in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten rich in the first place. Again, 90% of the taxes are paid by the top 10% of wage earners. Punishing success with punitive tax rates will and has hurt the economy, big time. What is fair? Taking *all* of the money from those, "evil rich people"? How will destroying the rich help anyone? it will hurt...
"Again, 90% of the taxes are paid by the top 10% of wage earners."
I'm not going to read your lil essay here, and I'm going to watch your videos. I'm sorry but if you didn't take the time to look that figure up I have absolutely no interest in the information you're offering me because you don't take the accuracy and the factual support of that information seriously.
The top 10% been paying 70% of the tax consistently for years.
@wildbloodydragon - Ah, the classic signs of a bitter, hate filled liberal/socialist/democrat, sticking their head in the sand, ignoring the facts. I am so sorry you hate so many of your fellow Americans and in so doing, your very country and everything it stands for. You are barely out of teenager land and yet you know it all and have nothing left to learn from anyone else. With all due respect, what a sad existence. If the facts don't suit you, then you don't believe them. Sad, really sad.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 My mistake. I meant to say: "I'm NOT going to watch your videos."
Hate? No I don't hate you at all buddy, that'd be stupid. As stupid as falling in love with a girl I've never met.
But I hate how you're arrogantly trying to school me without taking the time to look up the facts. Here's a tip: if you're sure of the accuracy of your facts, cite your sources.
The National Taxpayers Union says the top 10% pay 70% of the taxes. So, what's your source?
@wildbloodydragon ...hurt *everyone* and help *no one*, but the greedy liberal/socialist/democrat big government. The rich have more economic power and the ability to stimulate the economy than anyone else. You are correct, with lower tax rates, they'd put that money in the bank, where the bank then invests it, stimulating the economy further, or they buy a new house, putting unemployed Americans to work building houses, truckers delivering products, real estate agents making sales, etc.,...
@wildbloodydragon...all of which *puts the unemployed to work* and while they are working, they are paying *income taxes* that they weren't before when they were unemployed, which *increases tax revenue* to the government."Those evil rich", people buy houses, cars, boats, airplanes, cruises, invest in new business ventures, etc., etc., etc., all of which puts Americans to work! When we take away the money of those, "evil rich", then they don't make as many purchases, and people lose their jobs!
@wildbloodydragon - This is really basic economics and common sense. I mean no disrespect at all, you are obviously an intelligent person, but I'd recommend you stop drinking the liberal/socialist/democrat/Obama, "hate America", Kook-Aid, because it's blinding you to the common sense truth. A poor man never gave anyone a job and tax and spend, spend, spend and then spend some more until the pot is empty for *generations*, will bankrupt our economy and cause an economic collapse that will....
@wildbloodydragon ....that will make the Great Depression look like a party! Liberal/socialist/democrat tax and spend policies have *utterly failed*. We have to acknowledge this and move on to policies that actually work, or our economy will collapse and people will *die* because of it. It is said that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity. Tax and spend has utterly failed and we are not insane, so it's time to move on to policies that *do* work.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Hey guys...just dropping in here due to the sudden renewed commenting. I think you both make some really good points, but as a rule, I do NOT discuss politics here. If you guys (or gals?) want to have this conversation, I think you should, but I'd ask that you take it private
@uxwbill - it does fit the topic at hand and unless you'd want to see another horrendously failed cash for clunkers fiasco followed by the collapse of the U.S. economy, it might be a good idea to encourage such exchanges of information.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 As I said, I most definitely think you _should_ have this conversation. Just maybe not here. :-) I know it fits the topic at hand. There are some great forums out there (like PolitcalChat) and they'd be a much better match than the comments section of a YT video, where you're limited as to what you can say by letter count.
Even with voting, demonstrating and writing the elected, I feel rather powerless to stop another C4C or fix the economy disaster.
@uxwbill - Freedom of speech should always be encouraged. Talking, sharing thoughts and idea's with others, (be it face to face or YouTube forums), using our freedom of speech, is how people decide on how to vote and as with the horrendously failed, socialism based cash for clunkers program and the resulting tanking economy, that can have very large affects for all of us, as it has. :( So never feel powerless. The pen is mightier than the sword! :) Freedom rules. :)
@Matthew55904 Being as this car had a carburetor, changes in vacuum pressure caused by the action of the carburetor (under acceleration, for example) would probably drive the gauge. Today it would be done with a computer that monitored various parameters.
The econometer was a kind of er 'easy read' vacuum guage. Nothing to do with carburetor or fuel injection, both had them. It tells you if the throttle opening is economical or not. When the pin goes to max your a gas guzzler so drive in your highest gear not letting the engine labor at low revs. Avoid hard acceleration and braking, drive at a good steady speed wherever possible keeping the pin at the minimum deflection of the dial scale. Still guzzles!
Thanks Obama, for starting a program where people trade in their "clunkers", which are usually in good condition, for some new piece of shit that will be falling apart in 5 years. Thanks for sending all these wonderful, well built beauties I would kill for straight to the crusher. For destroying perfectly good cars poor families would have loved to have. Thanks again, idiot!
That's a sweet car. I didn't even know there were Parisienne's in the states. I thought that they were only a Canada model. I thought your top end was the Bonneville. Well, looks like I learned something today.
Again, sweet car. It's a shame to see something as nice as that get toasted. They drove very smoothly. Very Plush. So sad.
Yes, there were and like yours, they were a clone of the Caprice from Chevrolet. I don't know where the top end fit in, but there won't be any cars like this any more and that makes me sad.
If I ever find one in good shape, I'll never let the heathens near it.
With a beat up one, I could see that. But a perfect example like this would be far too nice to destroy that way. Or...it was. If there were only two ways for this car to go, I'd much rather that it went out with a bang...but that'd still be a waste.
@koioo2 - He never had the car in the first place. The car was destroyed in the Obama-led, "Cash for Clunkers", program. :( Isn't it just, "great", to have a President like this?! :(
Right. I really did hope it would escape on a technicality (lack of valid tags on the car--last ones were Dec 08?) but it didn't. I figured that the least I could do was get some pictures of the old girl and give her one last hurrah, and show it to some people who actually *would* have appreciated it (like myself).
I would have been just sick if I'd have had to see it die. That 305 V8 ran so beautifully, not a problem in the world. Sickening. Just sickening.
@uxwbill - Make darned sure you vote this Nov. 2, 2010 and vote out the rubber stamping, Obama-bot, will of the people IGNORING democrats out of Congress and the Senate! This bunch of democrats is the worst I have ever seen in all my life. They all deserve to be fired for supporting Obama-nation's socialism, such as this incredibly stupid and wasteful Obama-nation cash for clunkers program! America, have we had ENOUGH YET?!
@MrSponge1985 - That's a good thing! :) Make sure you vote this fall, in November, and vote OUT all the democrats in Congress and the Senate, as they all supported this Obama-nation idiocy with YOUR taxpayer money!
Oh :( it's not around anymore? :( This is such a beautiful wagon, They don't make them like this these days and it's a damn shame. WHY would this car be destroyed?! It's beautiful! Poor thing, would have made a good car. :(
@Declipse16 - The car was destroyed because of our Obama. Make sure you vote in this fall's Congressional election and vote out the democrats who rubber stamp everything Obama wants, and vote IN a Republican controlled Congress to put the brakes on Obama-style socialism!
@JohnQuincyAdams1 OF COURSE it was HIS fault. I can't STAND him! WHAT has he done that's actually been good since he got in?! NOTHING. I can't vote this fall because i'm not 18 till december, but you can be damn sure i'm voting those idiots out of there when i can.
@Declipse16 - Hats off to you! It's good to see there are *some* folks with a brain! Here's what you CAN do until you can vote; exercise your Constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom of speech and spread the word about Obama-nation to as many people as you can! Freedom of speech, IN ACTION! :) Freedom! NO MORE OBAMA-NATION! VOTE OUT ALL DEMOCRATS on Nov. 2, 2010 and put the brakes on what Obama-nation is doing to our great country!
@JohnQuincyAdams1 OH I WILL. I'm about sick of this nonsense he's doing. I WILL NOT have beautiful cars like the one in the video destroyed and replaced by toyota's! D:<
@uxwbill - That's really, really a crying shame that a car like this, in such great condition, would go to waste. Obama's cash for clunkers program I felt was totally disgusting. Destroying thousands and thousands of perfectly good older cars that low - middle income families would have loved to have, because they can't afford a newer car. So instead we take *their* tax money and give $1,500 of it to a person who *can afford* a new car! Stealing from the poor and giving to the rich! Terrible!
@jason4485 - Age doesn't have anything to do with a vehicle being a, "clunker". Someday if you are lucky enough to drive a full sized GM car from the 70's or 80's, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover how well they ride and how well they drive. They are low cost to repair/maintain and very easy to repair as well. Today's cars are an absolute nightmare by comparison!
@canadiancatgreen I don't know how it ended up. Technically, I don't think it shouldd have qualified either--it didn't have a current tag on it, nor was the owner carrying insurance on it. So far as I knew, it was a requirement to have both, so that people wouldn't be getting junk but "drivable" cars out and trying to turn them in.
aahhh beautiful vehicle, my bravada i also lost too cash 4 "clunkers" i was given a 02 bonneville for compensation, but i still really miss my bravada RIP
what a sham i have always loved old cars but i love them even more now that i bought my first car ever a 1988 Lincoln town car the car you show looks like it is in wonderful shape what ever the guy got for it from the cash for clunkers program was not enoff sorry to here that its gone
I am driving an 84 pontiac Parisienne and it has the same paint job, I use it everyday and I love it. WOW! this has 5,444 hits, and 122 comments, that's great, I know what my next video is going to be.
Looked like it would've been a nice car to have. I prefer the wood paneled models (my '89 Country Squire) but if I got one like this, I wouldn't complain. Thanks for showing.
Kills me to think how many perfectly good cars were destroyed. How many poor families out there without a decent car? They would be thrilled to have something that nice. Obama is an idiot.
@joeysixtysix - I agree, except he's not an idiot, Obama just clearly doesn't give a flying rats ass about the average American. Untold numbers of perfectly good vehicles that low-middle class Americans would have loved to own were destroyed by Obama's program! It only helped the rich by giving them up to a $1,500 discount on a new car, paid for by everyone else with the taxes they paid! Talk about a welfare program for the rich! :(
im getting all the people that are in the automotive field to vote him down because they took a big hit for this one who wants to buy auto parts for an old car now or even buy a used car after this so called cash for clunkers they sent the steel to china for a big development so let me think china is happy the us government is happy the auto companies are happy but the people are not the end by america
obamas didnt care about the waste he caused he cared about getting the money back from the auto companies that the government bailed out the auto makers who cares about the people fuc them now the funny thing is that is income so at the end of the year you get taxed on that $ 4,500 they gave you read the small print people i bet alot of people are going to be pissed and not vote for obama next election ..
Please hold that thought. I like reading comments on my videos and don't mind almost any comment, even critical ones.
However, I did specifically ask (in the video description) that excessively political or politically charged (left/right/etc) comments be left at the door. There is no point to turning this video into your soap box or a comment war, and doing so is NOT welcome!
Please respect that request and stop doing so. I'm asking nicely. :-)
What a rip! With so many out of work and many others in need of a decent car, it's a shame. This car would have been nice for a family in need. It looks like it was taken care of and I'm willing to bet that mechanically it was in good shape too. What a waste! Thank you Obama for ruining the country in yet another way! Now my kids have to pay for the CFC funding.
It's an aftermarket player. I think the owners thought it was the most valuable part of the car...well, that and the wire wheels. They took both items. :-(
I have a feeling that they cut up the panel to put it in there--the original stereo would have been a shaft-style unit. If I'd have been fortunate enough to save it, I would have put a nice Sony AM Stereo/FM Stereo shaft-style unit in there to restore the mostly original look.
I wouldn't bet that it hasn't happened in some cases. If nothing else, you can always get a used/new engine and drivetrain. Might even be worth it in some cases.
I've *heard* stories (that's all they seem to be) about cars that have quietly escaped from the doom of CARS. It seems that the main method behind this has been pulling VINs and stuff from abandoned cars.
i hope so, i would think that there would be a few mechanics that wouldnt have the heart to just let a classic just go away like that, i would have done it, i tell you that, but thats interesting and good to know, thanks man
I know! The funny thing is, I hated them, growing up in the 80s. The 60s cars were so much more beautiful and now, 45 years removed, it is conclusive: the 60s cars WERE more beautiful. But the real dislike for the 80s cars was ultimately based on the fact that they were commonplace. Now that they're rare, their appeal to me is HUGE! My Youth! I own several 80s cars but hide their identity because I don't trust this administration and need to protect my anonymity. Evil, self-righteous people!
Want to see what a communist thinks about C4C? Check it out! Remember to remove the spaces youtube auto-inserts, especially the hidden one at the end of the link:
I looked at that other video and I see that you've been....ah....busy.
I can appreciate and agree with the fallacy behind C4C. The program could have been done better in every way, if it had to be done at all. And the first thing that should have been canned was all the senseless destruction of serviceable cars that people could use!
But I'd prefer that exceptionally political comments be left out of it, as the description says.
To say that the program could have been done better is to completely misunderstand the point of the program. This program worked perfectly. The Senate bill was inserted into a war supplemental funding bill and this was appropriate. CERTAIN PEOPLE are at war with the American people and what we've built. They're in the process of scrapping our nation. Next up: Your Granny and Nationalized Health Care. SOMEONE says we're "spending too much" on her...
yeah if you get the chance save it its to beautiful and 2 think some one would take the poor thing to cash for clunkers i know a junk yard employee that had to smash two 60s corvettes and one chevelle all in mint condition almost he quit his job and i saw the horror of them taking in a chevy scottsdale k20 and a k10 suburban and a c10 chevy silverado and it brought tears to my eyes and i felt sick all that week thinking people could do such things to destroy such beautiful vehicles
The older cars you mention wouldn't have qualified for Cash For Clunkers, so I'm not sure what was up with that. It's unfortunate, because if nothing else, those cars could have been used to keep others on the road by providing parts.
I do know that despite what countless videos have shown on YouTube, that *no* destruction of the vehicle beyond the powertrain was required. Vehicles collected in C4C could have been sold as salvage at auto auctions or parted out. That's too much work, I guess...
thats what i though but they had orders to crush them and then the metal was sold for scrap i didnt believe they did it he refused to crush one and quit instead i hope what you say is true i would like to get some interior door panels for my truck and all the trim
There were PDFs at the CARS web site that explained everything dealerships had to do, and that was pretty much to drain the oil, move the car where you wanted it to be when it died, and put x amount of engine poison in. Then you run it around 2,000 RPM until it locks up.
I doubt that most of the "whiz kids" doing this work bothered to read the guidelines, considering how many videos show dealership mechanics bouncing the engines off the rev limiter and laughing like idiots.
Cars that had been "disabled" could be sold at salvage auto auctions, and I believe that anyone could buy the bodies so long as the power train components were rendered irreparable or taken out and disposed of later.
I've heard stories of cars that were supposed to be destroyed as part of the program resurfacing with different identities and VIN numbers pulled from abandoned cars or cars from junkyards and then rebuilt as salvage autos. I could believe that has happened.
I would definitely suggest that you go and see the salvage yard operator and ask. There shouldn't be any harm in doing that, although you might have to sign a waiver to be able to go into the scrapping area. Offer 'em a few bucks for the parts, just to sweeten the deal a bit. Scrap metal prices are down, so they might go for that if they won't otherwise let you in there to get parts.
wow its so beautiful hope u can save it i just recently saved a 1981 chevy c20 and its my first vehicle its rusted but nothing a little body work wont fix just needs two new doors i had a feeling if i didnt it would go to cash for clunkers and idk why but i love those old chevy trucks i would of gotten a suburban but dad didnt like the idea he also hates my truck hopefully a vid of it soon cold start it hates the cold

That is certainly not a clunker. What a shame...
maplewoodsp 1 week ago
Its true, that the Car dealers were marking up cars for the clunker program. The owner of this car probably could have sold this to you for 2000.00, went to the dealer with cash in hand, and got a better deal than the cash for clunkers deal would have gotten them.

@Dreambro1 I don't know if I ought to say anything or not, but the owner of this car wasn't what you'd call a wizard...

I had this in the sedan. It was my first car and a great gas-guzzler. However gas was only a dollar a gallon back then.

umm anyone got any parts for a 1989 caprice wagon rust free let me know I cannot find the boxy wagons anymore here in lower Michigan.

What a shame this country blames a noble OLD car such as this for their glut of 6000 SUVs and Pickups....even without great technology these old behemoths would equal the mpg of the newer pickups
solo2vette 3 months ago
@solo2vette What I'd really like to see--and do, if I were any kind of machinist and had the money to throw it at--is one of these cars retrofitted with a modern engine and drive train. I suspect it could be done, and it would be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes, just as a test.
There will probably never be cars like this again, and that makes me very sad. As I've said elsewhere, I will have one, and nobody will ever take it away.

People are fucking stupid. Don't blame Obama. Wouldn't you propose such a program for people who're making due with really really old shitty cars?

@mustang633NY - The previous President had nothing to do with conducting the war on terrorism. That was approved by Congress and the war on terrorism is going to be long and hard fought. We knew that going in. But it's better than having thousands of innocent people did in more World Trade Center like attacks.
JohnQuincyAdams1 1 year ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 my thoughts exactly - keep the fight over there so they cant get us again.... but even though i supported bush in many of his ideas - i do whish we had a better plan for iraq back in 2002 when we went over there.. as do we all im sure
mustang633NY 1 year ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 First, it's not better. The number of Americans killed during this pointless war is more than the people killed in 9/11.
Second, it won't prevent the next attacks. Do you know what caused the attacks in the first place? Hatred. We go into these countries and kill millions of people who WE consider to be "terrorists". Why would they not hate us? They have every right to.
If we stop fucking with other countries, we will be much more secure.
wildbloodydragon 1 year ago
@wildbloodydragon - I don't see any, "good intentions", with this failed cash for clunkers bologna. It was just pure socialism, "spreading the money around", taking from the poor and giving to the rich! In a democracy, a free society, the government has no business in screwing around with the economy and people's money. For over 234 years, American soldiers have been dying on the battlefields to defend FREEDOM in this great country we have, not the chains of SOCIALISM!
JohnQuincyAdams1 1 year ago 4
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Obama is as far as socialism as it gets. He just agreed to extend tax cuts for people making $250K and above for another two years, which adds $70 billion added to our deficit.
Cash for Clunkers was only there to make a market for new cars. In effect it was an indirect bailout for big corporations. Nothing socialist about that one either.
I'm not sure you know what you're talking about.
wildbloodydragon 1 year ago
@wildbloodydragon - My friend, I know exactly what I am talking about. Do you? Obama-nation was *forced* to agree to the Pres.Bush tax cuts *for all Americans* by a Republican majority Congress, which was the elected will of the people. Obama-nation didn't want to do it, rest assured. Tax cuts don't add to the national debt, as they spur economic growth with *increases* tax revenues. *Spending* is what adds to the national debt and Obama-nation has spent more than *all Presidents combined*!
JohnQuincyAdams1 1 year ago 3
@wildbloodydragon - "Spreading the wealth around", via the failed cash for clunkers is very much socialism, however in this case it was stealing from the *poor* and giving it to the *rich*! Instead of providing a 41,500 gift of taxpayer money to people who could afford a new car, it would have been far more effective and in keeping with *freedom* of they just had cut taxes $1,500 for every American and let *the people* decide what they needed, be it a car, home improvements, or what have you! 9
JohnQuincyAdams1 1 year ago 4
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Wow, you're clueless.
Again, nothing to do with socialism.
wildbloodydragon 1 year ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Spending and cutting taxes BOTH will obviously contribute to deficit.
Taxes: Republicans risked tax cuts for 98% of the country, along with unemployment benefits, took them hostage, only to gain tax cuts for people who absolutely don't need it, the top 2%.
The top 2% make nearly 30% of the wealth in the US. What do you think cutting taxes for these few people will do to the budget?
Spending: Republicans fully support spending 750 billion a year on the war. Go figure.
wildbloodydragon 1 year ago
@wildbloodydragon - Cutting spending will reduce the deficit and cutting taxes will increase the volume of taxes collected, by putting more people to work and they will pay income taxes. This has been historically proven over and over. 90% of the taxes in the U.S. are paid by the top 10% of the wage earners. Slightly more than 50% of the citizens pay no income taxes at all. How is this fair? How does this stimulate the economy? It doesn't. Is spending money on the war on terrorism an option?
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 That woulda been a miracle. I wish that was the case.
Are you honestly assuming that the rich would spend 100% their tax refunds hiring new employees?
Seriously? Would you do that if you were rich? I know wouldn't. I'd put it in the bank or buy another house.
The top 10% pay 70% of the taxes. How is it fair? They make roughly 70% of the income, that's how.
If you don't tax these rich cunts they'll just hoard the money. Simple as that.
wildbloodydragon 5 months ago
@wildbloodydragon - It is the case. The rich generally don't get tax refunds, because they are smart enough not to overpay on their taxes in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten rich in the first place. Again, 90% of the taxes are paid by the top 10% of wage earners. Punishing success with punitive tax rates will and has hurt the economy, big time. What is fair? Taking *all* of the money from those, "evil rich people"? How will destroying the rich help anyone? it will hurt...
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 I'm gonna stop right here.
Sorry.
wildbloodydragon 5 months ago
@wildbloodydragon - Ah, the classic signs of a bitter, hate filled liberal/socialist/democrat, sticking their head in the sand, ignoring the facts. I am so sorry you hate so many of your fellow Americans and in so doing, your very country and everything it stands for. You are barely out of teenager land and yet you know it all and have nothing left to learn from anyone else. With all due respect, what a sad existence. But I hate how you're arrogantly trying to school me without taking the time to look up the facts. Here's a tip: if you're sure of the accuracy of your facts, cite your sources.
The National Taxpayers Union says the top 10% pay 70% of the taxes. So, what's your source?
wildbloodydragon 4 months ago
@wildbloodydragon ...hurt *everyone* and help *no one*, but the greedy liberal/socialist/democrat big government. The rich have more economic power and the ability to stimulate the economy than anyone else. You are correct, with lower tax rates, they'd put that money in the bank, where the bank then invests it, stimulating the economy further, or they buy a new house, putting unemployed Americans to work building houses, truckers delivering products, real estate agents making sales, etc.,...
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@wildbloodydragon...all of which *puts the unemployed to work* and while they are working, they are paying *income taxes* that they weren't before when they were unemployed, which *increases tax revenue* to the government."Those evil rich", people buy houses, cars, boats, airplanes, cruises, invest in new business ventures, etc., etc., etc., all of which puts Americans to work! When we take away the money of those, "evil rich", then they don't make as many purchases, and people lose their jobs!
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@wildbloodydragon - This is really basic economics and common sense. I mean no disrespect at all, you are obviously an intelligent person, but I'd recommend you stop drinking the liberal/socialist/democrat/Obama, "hate America", Kook-Aid, because it's blinding you to the common sense truth. A poor man never gave anyone a job and tax and spend, spend, spend and then spend some more until the pot is empty for *generations*, will bankrupt our economy and cause an economic collapse that will....
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 - That's, "KOOL-AID", although, "Kook-Aid", could also apply I suppose. lol :) Sorry for the typo.
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago

If you guys (or gals?) want to have this conversation, I think you should, but I'd ask that you take it private
uxwbill 5 months ago
@uxwbill - it does fit the topic at hand and unless you'd want to see another horrendously failed cash for clunkers fiasco followed by the collapse of the U.S. economy, it might be a good idea to encourage such exchanges of information.
JohnQuincyAdams1 5 months ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 As I said, I most definitely think you _should_ have this conversation. Just maybe not here. :-) I know it fits the topic at hand. There are some great forums out there (like PolitcalChat) and they'd be a much better match than the comments section of a YT video, where you're limited as to what you can say by letter count.
Even with voting, demonstrating and writing the elected, I feel rather powerless to stop another C4C or fix the economy disaster.
uxwbill 5 months ago
@uxwbill - Freedom of speech should always be encouraged. Talking, sharing thoughts and idea's with others, (be it face to face or YouTube forums), using our freedom of speech, is how people decide on how to vote and as with the horrendously failed, socialism based cash for clunkers program and the resulting tanking economy, that can have very large affects for all of us, as it has. :( So never feel powerless. The pen is mightier than the sword! :) Freedom rules. :)

a Fuel Economy guage? how did that work?
Matthew55904 1 year ago
@Matthew55904 Being as this car had a carburetor, changes in vacuum pressure caused by the action of the carburetor (under acceleration, for example) would probably drive the gauge. Today it would be done with a computer that monitored various parameters.
uxwbill 1 year ago
@Matthew55904 - watch?v=MBYVZLRyQjk
Still guzzles!

what a sham i have always loved old cars but i love them even more now that i bought my first car ever a 1988 Lincoln town car the car you show looks like it is in wonderful shape what ever the guy got for it from the cash for clunkers program was not enoff sorry to here that its gone
juzzy1k 1 year ago
@juzzy1k Saw the owner about a month ago. He said " hey they crushed my car" like he was proud of it or something.
I just looked at him and said "that's a tragedy". Like saying the ocean is wet, though.
I don't know if it actually happened that way or not. Don't *want* to know, frankly.
I'll have one someday, and I'll be damned if anyone will take it away.

Not with the owner right there. I *asked* them if I could take the pictures.
I won't say it wasn't a tempting thought...but two things: it would have to be hidden and later registration would have been a problem.
Nope, not for me. I did what I could to save it while staying on the right side of the law. And I'm so glad I never had to see it die.

you could of bought it :) and just kept it running in the back yard :) just drive it around lol

I just wish this one was still here. To destroy it was pointless and unforgivable, especially in the shape it was in.
I'll have one someday.

too bad it had to go. it looked in a very good condition for its age. it coulda became a classic

Obama is an idiot.
joeysixtysix 2 years ago 34
Right on there. Just because it is old, and needs to be retired, doesn't mean it still works...
Many people can't afford a top of the line car these days, with all this pushing around. So if it still works, why waste it?

@joeysixtysix - I agree, except he's not an idiot, Obama just clearly doesn't give a flying rats ass about the average American. Untold numbers of perfectly good vehicles that low-middle class Americans would have loved to own were destroyed by Obama's program! It only helped the rich by giving them up to a $1,500 discount on a new car, paid for by everyone else with the taxes they paid! Talk about a welfare program for the rich! :(

im getting all the people that are in the automotive field to vote him down because they took a big hit for this one who wants to buy auto parts for an old car now or even buy a used car after this so called cash for clunkers they sent the steel to china for a big development so let me think china is happy the us government is happy the auto companies are happy but the people are not the end by america
midnitesquirldog 2 years ago
obamas didnt care about the waste he caused he cared about getting the money back from the auto companies that the government bailed out the auto makers who cares about the people fuc them now the funny thing is that is income so at the end of the year you get taxed on that $ 4,500 they gave you read the small print people i bet alot of people are going to be pissed and not vote for obama next election ..
midnitesquirldog 2 years ago

It's gotta CD Player! OMG didn't expect that
RollinOnDemDubz 2 years ago
It's an aftermarket player. I think the owners thought it was the most valuable part of the car...well, that and the wire wheels. They took both items. :-(
I have a feeling that they cut up the panel to put it in there--the original stereo would have been a shaft-style unit. If I'd have been fortunate enough to save it, I would have put a nice Sony AM Stereo/FM Stereo shaft-style unit in there to restore the mostly original look.

haha if i was one of the people killin these cars, i would have been stashin so many cars,
MrBunsX 2 years ago
I wouldn't bet that it hasn't happened in some cases. If nothing else, you can always get a used/new engine and drivetrain. Might even be worth it in some cases.
I've *heard* stories (that's all they seem to be) about cars that have quietly escaped from the doom of CARS. It seems that the main method behind this has been pulling VINs and stuff from abandoned cars.
uxwbill 2 years ago
i hope so, i would think that there would be a few mechanics that wouldnt have the heart to just let a classic just go away like that, i would have done it, i tell you that, but thats interesting and good to know, thanks man

im from ireland and love these 80's square shaped american cars, i could not scrape that baby never mind crush it!
2009jimmy2009 2 years ago 3

But I'd prefer that exceptionally political comments be left out of it, as the description says.
uxwbill 2 years ago

DRNEGOLICIS 2 years ago
The older cars you mention wouldn't have qualified for Cash For Clunkers, so I'm not sure what was up with that. It's unfortunate, because if nothing else, those cars could have been used to keep others on the road by providing parts.
I do know that despite what countless videos have shown on YouTube, that *no* destruction of the vehicle beyond the powertrain was required. Vehicles collected in C4C could have been sold as salvage at auto auctions or parted out. That's too much work, I guess...
uxwbill 2 years ago
thats what i though but they had orders to crush them and then the metal was sold for scrap i didnt believe they did it he refused to crush one and quit instead i hope what you say is true i would like to get some interior door panels for my truck and all the trim
DRNEGOLICIS 2 years ago
There were PDFs at the CARS web site that explained everything dealerships had to do, and that was pretty much to drain the oil, move the car where you wanted it to be when it died, and put x amount of engine poison in. Then you run it around 2,000 RPM until it locks up.
I doubt that most of the "whiz kids" doing this work bothered to read the guidelines, considering how many videos show dealership mechanics bouncing the engines off the rev limiter and laughing like idiots.
Sorry, not funny.
uxwbill 2 years ago
Cars that had been "disabled" could be sold at salvage auto auctions, and I believe that anyone could buy the bodies so long as the power train components were rendered irreparable or taken out and disposed of later.
I've heard stories of cars that were supposed to be destroyed as part of the program resurfacing with different identities and VIN numbers pulled from abandoned cars or cars from junkyards and then rebuilt as salvage autos. I could believe that has happened.
uxwbill 2 years ago
