Hya Kells! Good to see you're still going strong :-)
"This is the song Luke most wanted to be remembered for." And this is what he shall be remembered for... You know, like we now have these talent-shows "The voice of Holland, the Voice of America" and all that, you guys in Ireland don't need that. Lukey WAS, IS and ALWAYS SHALL BE "The Voice of Ireland" :-)
story goes they were in a pub in enniscorthy and a man came in and listened to them play and said would you mind if I sang something, they said sure, and he sang this, they were mesmerized
between Luke singing these really emotional/passionate songs and Ronnie singing the real party, everybody-clap-hands-and-stamp-feet songs, no matter what mood your in, your covered. two legends sadly missed and irreplaceable.
When I was a child you would wonder why you would be shushed by the adults for talking when a song is being sung. When you hear this powerful song you know why
really really wonderful song with beautiful lyrics, full of deep simple incurable sorrow. "...common grief is error, true grief will still remain" as Dowland says. Author unknown I guess. Interpretation of such a song has to be very difficult. Luke also omitted some "redundant" verses I think.
me n my favorite uncles song......he died saturday rip love u H xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
a good irish brekfast followed bye a load of stories and a few well told lies alongside a wild scatter of pints and then ly back and listen to luke, now thats a day being irish is about.
The dub's were in enniscorthy, drinking in a boozer on the bridge, playing for their own enjoyment when a gent asked if he could sing a song for them, the gents name was michael j flannery, sure they agreed and the song was bunclody, this is where luke first heard this song. Beautiful song.
Ended up the last years of my sad sporting life playing junior hurling in Wicklow! Many a trip down to the Wexford - Carlow border area and this song came to mind. Great sense of place from the great man. Like lives on!
Wonderful stuff. Luke was the ultimate folk singer. When he left the Dubliners earlier in his career they just drifted. They were just another group. It was after his return they became a great group. Luke was the Dubliners.
where would louke be with out his great backing, ciaran bourke, john sheeehan, barney mckenna, ronnie drew,he is not the dubliners by himself,he is the best part no doubt
Just got into u-tube this week, and asked for shoals of herring, my fav LUKE KELLY, takes me back to the time I had a few guinnesses with Luke backstage in Milford, well done kellyoneill, have downloaded all of LUKES songs, thanks again. Tosh
Thanks for reply, the hairs on my arms have just risen thinking about it, Christ he was some guy, seen them bout 10 times in 2yrs back then, and got to be honest never seen them after LUKE died, I cried that day, just as I did for Lennon.
Always went to Milford and surrounding areas in Donegal pabu4, my wife came from there, I am a Glaswegian, but love all types of music, seen them in Glasgow a couple of times, but as mentioned, will never forget backstage with the guys, Jesus they could down the Guinness, and Luke just had an aura,a magic about him, I just could not take my eyes off him, he was just such a happy guy, and so easy to talk to.
When a tingle goes up your spine you know its a good song, a brilliant song a Luke Kelly song.
