the idea is that, as one of the developers said in the game callouts, why boder modeling someone (the sniper) your not going to see? so instead of having alyx there, they smply put the combine there and made it friendly, except they forgot to take out the "kiling" animation!

its cuz when alex gets the sniper, its actually a combine sniper programmed 2 help you. So when you grenade sniper alex like you would to kill a sniper combine, the combine soldier wuld fall out cuz thats thats what it does if a u detonate a grenade in%Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

Confirmed, when I loaded this map up, i sv_cheats 1'd and spawned a combine soldier, he stood there staring at me, and acted as if he was on my side. Its like the antlions on HL2 nova prospect, AI_Relationship :)

It's forgivable that Valve didn't bother making a new Alyx-with-rifle model in case one of us curious HL nerds would try to throw some explosives up there - which really is what you by reflex come to think of doing, after playing HL2.

They just put a Combine Sniper in there, then made an ai_relationship which told the Sniper to be friendly to the player.

There's no "specially coded" Combine Sniper. You can do this with any NPC. Hell, you can even make Combine Soldiers attack each other if you want. Or make Alyx attack the player.

This has been explained. Alyx is using a sniper rifle at this point and since the player isn't at any point supposed to be able to see her there, an AI-modified Combine Sniper is in her place.
