@SeanCF1 Hakkinen never won a race by then...this was his first win ever...If I remember correctly if was even speculated about him quiting or something similar so that's reasonable, Villeneauve only neede to score those few points & the agreement went on! =) epic moments
villeneuve actually slowed down, because Ron Dennis of Mclaren and Frank Williams of Williams, had an agremeent if this situation should arise, everyone knows that, just look at the press conference later when all the drivers say what actually happened
Williams and Mclaren had an agreement before the race that Mclarens wouldn't hold up Villeneuve if he was behind them after pitstops. Having done this, William's end of the bargain was to let Mclaren win if they were in a position to do so. Which they did. Coulthard was forced to let Hakkinen past by the pitwall, not asked by them.
The pass on coulthard was based on team orders and JV's car was damaged in the MSC incident thus a slower car. JV only needed a point to win the world championship. ron dennis and frank williams orchestrated this result. Nothing to take away from mika.
Villeneuve needed at least 1 or 2 points. So I think he didn't want to "fight" agaisnt the McLaren and put his points in danger again in another little crash (first one with Schumacher).
I thought Villenueves letting through of Hakkinen was to avoid some kind of punishment for some reason. As for the Hakkinen/Coulthard pass, there may have been pre-race agreement for this particular race, but it was definately a decision from the pit wall to let Hakkinen through.
Still Hakkinen remains my all-time favourite driver. Raikkonen a fairly close second.
Actually, McLaren told Coulthard to let Häkkinen pass, but it seems to be less shocking when it's McLaren (here and in Melbourne 98) than when it's Ferrari (Sepang 99 & Spielberg 02). And I DO NOT understand why people are shocked when the red do that and amazed when the greys do it...
Villeneuve let pass both McLarens due to a damage car. He did not need a victory to win the championship anyway since schumi was sent out after non accidental collision with Villeneuve.
his car had some minor damage but the main reason he let them both pass was that he didnt want to risk a possible collision with the mclarens trying to overtake...3rd was good enough to win so he played it safe and allowed them to passs without much struggle
Nothing spectacular, the commentator is excited because he is finn, but Coulthard let him pass and Villeneuve had the damaged car due to Schumi's cheat attempt.
I always liked Hakkinen but this race was as farce. It is known also that Villeneuve also let him go past. A great gesture from both Coulthard and Jacques but not what F1 should be about.
team orders, fixing, as Coulthard had won GPs and was ahead in the championship

What was left unnoticed, Berger passed Irvine on the last lap. Eddie narrowly held off Frentzen in the end.

Hakkinen was a great driver, he didnt only win 2 world championships. He won them when racing against a person who was statistically the best.
Mika for the win!!
