Make sure you have a good air stone and air pump if you don't already. Keep a watch on the pH. It should be around 6.5. I hope you ran the system until it developed the proper nitrifying bacteria load (called cycling) or else it will not work. Sadly a few dead fish can bring up the ammonia and help the cycling along, but it should stabilize. That is when you should actually start. That can take up to 2 weeks!!! It takes patients to set up this little "ecosystem".
Thanks everyone!! I recommend in every way!!! The produce tastes great!!! Yes the lava rocks in this system serve as the planting media, and the filter/ host environment for the all important nitrifying bacteria as well.
@padkisson - Thanks for the update. I have some questions for you though. Is your entire filtering media just the lava stones? What is your average rate of water replacement? Most importantly, does the harvest taste good? I'm thinking about trying a setup similar to your's. I was considering a straight hydroponics system, but I found it to be lacking in that it's a one way system. You pour all of those resources into it, and your return's aren't as great.
My fish in the double barrel system keep dying did you do anything special to keep this from happening.
