.... Good on you for cutting the duet. Actually. It is a majestic performance by the entire cast. Those who would like to see how the whole thing goes should support the people who made a performance like this commercially available to us all in the form of the DVD and BUY it!
Getting to see this is a privilege, not a right. A privilege that must be paid for if it is to continue to be available in the future. Don't ask for more clips. BUY the DVD.
But what a weird place to cut that duet! They should have extended it a little bit for servillia to finish or (I am going to get shot for this) cut it down to Garnaca's singing. That way they could have added Non piu or more of Parto or something! Just what I think. Buy the DVD though!
So by when in the opera has Sesto tried to kill Tito? In some versions, they have it in different places. In the Ponnelle film with Troyanos, it is right before Vengo, Aspettate. In the Harnoncourt with Kasarova, it seems like it is around Dei Conservate. In the Opus Arte with Graham, it seems like it is after the other four (Publio, Annio, Servillia, Vitellia) come.

Those aren't fucking Shmuedatittles. All I see are boys standing in their underwear. Pedophilic director, fucking douche bag- leaving out the Shmuedatittles and replacing them with things he'd drivel over.
By definition, we're all animals. Particularly, I am of the genus homo and the species sapien. I don't think American is a group in taxonomy, but you wouldn't know much about that, assuming you're a more primitive version of a homo sapien. But I'll rest my case, and my pseudonym doesn't imply anything (that's if you let a number dictate your opinion of someone you don't even know).
I dunno. What's innocent about Tito anyhow? The dude was responsible for a lot of massacre when he was a general and only became benevolent after he became Caesar, I think. It's a weird staging device.
I must have watched this DVD 20 times already and I still haven't figured that out. ;oP And they come back letter to serve as dinner at the finale, too!
It really is a dramatically wonderful staging most of the times... and then the other time (like those boys)... errrrr... eh??? ;o)
Great performance! I loved all the cast but hated the director. What's the thing with maniacal Tito or Publio looking like he wants to bed both Sesto and Vitellia in Act II? Eeek. But the singing and acting is splendid, especially Kasarova's Sesto. This Sesto is unmatched! Ms. Kasarova really lives through every word and note she sings. You don't need to know Italian to understand what she sings of.
Yup, it took me a while to catch on to what Kusej wanted to do with Tito and Publio, too (think Tito is really mad, and Publio is looking for love and is jealous of the lovers). A performance to remember indeed! :o)
Buy the DVD, folks! Support these wonderful artists!
I have this DVD, love the whole cast, except Michael Schade(Tito), he has nice voice, but his facial expression and acting just plain rude and ugly. Can't stand him!
Oh, I think that 'maniac' characterization is what Martin Kusej (the director) wanted. It took me a while to get used to that, too, but it somehow makes it understandable why Sesto would choose Vitellia over Tito, I think. Really works in 'Ah, grazie si rendano'... a bloody dictator with guilty conscience, he is! ;o)
The mouth thing... dunno what's with that either. It sure looks weird. :o)
Hope you enjoy it, operagirl. It has odd moments, but still is the best one of the opera out there, imo. And SIT805 is right about the lead roles, too. How the English critics keep calling Kasarova 'mannered' is beyond me. Methink they confuse people who behave like real human onstage to be more unnatural than robots who sing about tragedy while looking like they're bored. Nobody is bored here! Won't find a better Sesto, Vitellia, and Tito than in this show.
Actually, i have seen Kasarova perform live, and did find her quite mannered. Her acting left much to be desired as well, for every trouser role seems to be approached by walking in a "butch" swagger (I suppose in a misguided attempt to look more like a boy or man) that's very distracting. Different strokes for different folks, i guess. We can't all like the same singers.
How can the English think that Kasarova is mannered when they themselves are the most affected people on the planet? Kasarova is a god. Period. Possibly the greatest artist of any medium of our time.
I agree with D9l3tt and don't find Kasarova's trouser role manner fakely butch at all. I think she actually looks more natural in those roles than in some female roles... strangely enough.
Anyhow, she is my all time favorite singing actress. She means every note she sings and it comes through whether one understands the language or not. Extraordinary, that is!
Great singing and direction. Extra credits go out to Schade and the extraordinary, fantastic, superb Kasarova; one of the greatest artists of our time.
The last part of the overture, much of the wonderful Act I Annio(Garanca)/Servilia(Bonney) love-duet, Act I ending explosion... somehow pasted in before the beginning phrase from 'Deh conservate, o Dei', then the last of the opera ensemble finale.
Cool quick preview of the DVD... which is worth every Euro or Dollar of the retail price, btw. Support these excellent artists (singers, orchestra, theater) and buy the DVD.
For some reason I really don't like the singing!!

One can only imagine what sort of animal you are. American? Perhaps your pseudonym says it all.

i don't know if it really just that. There has to be something else to it. Why does one look scared?
olympicfreak678 3 years ago
there are absolutely lots of lesbian erotic undertones in this production. yet it is staged beautifully. one of the best!!!
pieternooten 4 years ago
I tend to disagree as both Sesto and Annio look convincigly male and act very well.
