Would it be possible/smart to set this up so when you floor the accelerator or get it to a certain point, the solenoid opens up? (instead of having a switch)
Adding LPGas to diesel engines has been done in Australia for years. You replace about 25% of the diesel with LPGas, and that acts like a cataylist - much better burning of the diesel, so no smoke out the exhaust and more power. Diesel in Aus is $1.50/lt and LPgas is 70c/lt at the pump (yes we have LPGas pumps at gas stations), so you save about 10-15% on your fuel bill with better power and reduced emissions.
Nice work. I'm also studying LPG fuel systems to learn more about how the propane is vaporized before it enters the engine. With much more heat ie 400 to 440 degrees Fahrenheit, I may be able to vaporize liquid gasoline before it enters the combustion chamber. My research indicate vaporizing gasoline inside the combustion chamber is one of the least efficient ways provide motive force. Great video, thank you for posting this video up.
@Eddie100. Early drag racing was nothing but guys tinkering with things they didn't understand, but look what it led to today. If you don't tinker that's fine but don't assume your the genius in the room because you don't
Do you people have any respect for the explosive capacity of what you are messing with? Many people have been victims of tinkering, so that we can have Standards as to who can and how we modify cars. I don't want to crush the inventive, but these vehicles are on the road and may contain children. I only had to see one video of a home done gas conversion, with a gas leak, the father lighting a cigarette and the car igniting and family perishing with audio screams. Safety first idiot.
just curious, but on the real kits i would imagine that the amount of propane being delivered to the enigine would vary on how much throttle it was given through a variable regulator or something?? like the more gasoline/diesel you sent to the engine the more propane you would also want to send to keep the percentage of fuel/propane the same.. is that the real difference between your homemade kit and the real deal??
You should look into hho, same concept except no need to buy propane or mess with a setup liike this, it runs all the time automatically giving better mileage, hp, and cleaner emissions without user intervention other than refilling water. And you can build it yourself too.
wont this system work on the fuel line with a injector engine instead of using petrol? One could block the return pipe so the gas is fed directly to the injectors in much the same way as it works on a petrol engine. Any ideas if this would work
Keep up that experimenting. I have to agree with TheChiefEngineer and say get a blow off cap fitted to that intake manifold. You have a combustable mixture inside it when it's running and a backfire into the manifold will cause a non-ideal situation. Quite a loud one I would imagine. :)
I love this sort of stuff too. It's the little guy's without corporate interests that keep it interesting for us experimenters. Good luck.
It would seem to me that along with a hobbs switch (to allow the propane to flow only at boost pressures of several pounds or more) that a vacuum actuated safety valve (called a lockoff valve) would make a good back up plan. In this way, propane flows only when running, only under boost and only when you have the engine running.Should cost around another 100 bucks off eBay. Just rambling...
The end of the vid Luke mentions "Dont use at idle, use under load or in boost". Activating the system with the master switch in the cab should not allow the solenoid to open. Using a HOBB switch set to close at a certain manifold pressure, would then provide the "underload" safegaurd.
I made a water injection system using this same idea.
Nice work Luke.
So what pressure do you set your reg to? what about an electrical pressure gauge in the cab so you know what is going on?
Kinda pointless to add another fuel to lessen the usage of the first fuel. Now if your truck was ONLY running on LP then that would be good like shown in the motherearthnews article where they converted a VW bus to propane. NIce try though. I'm working on a 100 mpg car myself. The engine I'm using 60 years old and the car body is 40 years old.
I have to disagree. It is NOT pointless to add a catalyzing fuel to the system. Propane improves combustion and enables a more complete burn. It is silly to allow unburnt fuel to exit the tail pipe.
Do you have documentation of your trials building the 100mpg car? Best of luck and I hope no one chimes in and says its pointless. Because that would be very useless commentary.
men have played golf on the moon 41 years ago, 100mpg car is pointless. a vehicle thats doesnt run on fossil fuels, now were getting some where. look into hydrogen.
propane increases the the mpgs with minimal usage of the lp look it up i can run through a 20lb cyl in 1200 mi with a 2-3 mpg increase know your facts before you start running your mouth.......... besides your car and engine dont weigh near what this truck does and 22mpg @ 80 mph and 3000 rpm on a 9800lb truck is not bad!
This is nearly similar to the lean-burn process for dual fuel engines. I like the ingenuity :) You need to make sure you use solid pipe, and incorporate a flashback arrestor and/or a bursting disc. This will help prevent an explosion in the bottle if anything goes wrong. I really liked this video :)
I'm running a little more complex system but on an 06 dodge 6 " lift 37" tires and I got 4 MPG and a little BBQ size propane bottle 4 gallons will last 500 Miles depends on how much you dump in and at what boost you get it to kick in. I can also put it to the max and get an extra 93 HP Dynoed but those 4 gallons will last about 150 miles fun at the race track 593 HP runs a 13.8 1/4 at 105 mph
I'm not sure. I do know it will increase the mileage because the burn is more efficient, but the way I have it set is for power increase, not for use during extended periods of time.

@Peterthegreatest. It's a diesel engine if it is back firing through the intake it has a lot bigger problems than the homemade propane kit.

@eddie100 Gasoline is much more dangerous!
I use to drive CNG vehicle,big 3 axles truck,for 6 years.
It is just idiotism to stay on gasoline at this price...

what kind of fuel mileage you get?

hi luke, i believe it's good to connect the solenoid valve to the ignition switch to automatically shut off the gas when shutting off the engine.
Is there a significant decrease of gasoline consumption afterwards?

@deuctewelle He's injecting Propane into the air box on a 7.3 diesel for more power not fuel economy.
