Apparently Sammy Davis Jr. was in the audience at this show; I have a recorded version of this performance from a compilation and Bobby called Sammy "the greatest entertainer in the world" before he started the song. Class act all the way.
I'm so sad Darin was off my radar in 1970 -73. Later, when I heard his many renditions of so many great songs... I asked ,"where was I when he was doing this?"
Bridged the gap between the Sinatra and Rock, Folk Eras.....seamless transitional talent who was better than all of em.... I never knew of his heart trouble or personal story... hell, I didn't know he was married to Sandra Dee.
I never saw one of her films.
I just downloaded 2 of his albums.... what a talent!

Currently playing in THE BIG ROOM upstairs. Perhaps the greatest talent pop music ever produced. He could play any instrument and sing like nobody else. Even Frank couldn't cover him.
One of the greatest talent we have ever had, right up there with Sinatra, Dino, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Frankie Laine. etc, etc..... I thank God that they were all part of my era, my years of growing, loving, dancing.............This generation has nothing like this. They do have "Il Divo" which I love to listen to but how much publicity do they get, hardly none. to bad, very very sad.
THE MAN BOBBY D.!!!! CAN DANCE..do you see his moves...a natural...like Michael Jackson...DRIVING and SEXY from the core...unbelievable..the best ever..thanks for posting.
Bobby Darin was way ahead of his time. He had it all--voice, stage presence, humor, and he didn't just croon--he accented his music with blues and jazz--
Im 17 and I just recently started listening to his material and to say the least I am amazed!! Much better than music of my generation!!
"Music" and "performances" just arn't the same as they used to be back then!! Live performances these days are all visual and no talent. Music these days are made by computers. Bobby was a REAL musician and a true entertainer:]
@RobotSlaughterhouse Bobby Darin is an inspiration. He did all this with a terminal heart condition, too! He didn't ever let his disabilities get in his way.
I am watching this vid (again) 35 years (?) after his death and I could just feel his energy, his emotion so vividly...i'm dancing to his song!, oh gosh, wish i saw him perform live!
It's incredible to know how ill he was. God, what a perfomer. Bobby lived to perform and this number really shows it. Those of you who think he was racist, check your facts. He was active in the civil rights movement, used black musicians when the studios didn't want him to, and refused to play clubs where black performers weren't allowed. The line is SWEET LITTLE ANDREA GIRL!
Some people are ridiculous. Need to read up on it before they comment. He was at the Selma and DC Marches, for God's sake. MLK went to the Copa to see him and BD introduced him to the audience to ABSOLUTE SILENCE because it wasn't done in those days. Idiots.
Bobby Darin received the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TONIGHT! His son Dodd Darin gave a beautiful speech on his behalf. Bobby was a versatile, multitalented genius!
=) You feel down? Just put on a Bobby Darin vid! Everytime I hear and see him dancing, singing like this I cant help but smile and all this energy hes putting into the song is just incredible! He said on the recording at the Desert Inn that this is a song that "Makes him feel as good as he can possibly feel" and did you ever see sombody have that much fun on stage as Bobby? I think its beautiful I think hes beautiful performing like this with a weak heart.
I totally agree with you on that. he always makes me happy. :)
I really like the variety he had from about 68 to the end in the 70's. That's when I think he was doing what he really wanted to do...You can still feel it.
Bobby died early but when you see vids like this its as if he put three times his age into his career! He achieved so much in such a short time! RIP Bobby, God has a better plan for you! If Bobby could read this now (Morons arguing about their political crap He'd turn in his grave)! How does crap talk like that give the Guy the Praise he so rightly deserves???
Bobby himself said his leftwing views "were absolute", (and knew they would hurt his career)..but Bobby could not stand to be irrelevant, which he had become, as a musical entity, with little commercial viability. That's why he came back to what he was great at, to please his audiences, who loved him. (and make a buck) .and why he is still the greatest live entertainer, in his prime, of any performer...look at his last performance..he gave it everything he had, knowing he was a goner......
Bobby Darin was a once in a lifetime combined talent, singer, entertainer with impeccable timing that took a chance on jazz and blues highlighting his crooning pop skills which was in vogue. He was a genius that used his musical skills to revolutionize music in an incredible way. Thank God for the spontaneity and the genius of BOBBY DARIN!
BTW - he is saying "sweet little Andrea girl" whoever said he was saying Aryan that is ridiculous, nobody ever even heard of that term back then anyway. His girlfriend at the time was Andrea Yeager.
I don't believe his "leftwing political stuff" was incessant. He searched for truth just like all of us do. I also do not believe it cost him fans, that is one person's opinion. Some people just cannot handle someone speaking truth to power. He spoke his convictions and refused to sell out. I admire him for it. We got tired of seeing our visionary leaders shot dead. Bobby was no different. He loved his country just like everyone else and wanted better for it.
Bobby owned the stage. His moves and timing are unique. And the soulful, jazzy way he performs here. Why did he have to die? Never in my memory though.
At least Bobby went back to his real talent and roots for his last show...put his toupe back on and his tux!! In the end, Bobby "parked" the incessant leftwing political stuff that was so problematic in his lack of popularity in his last years. He spent a fortune on a horrific, unreleasable movie called THE VENDORS. He was broke, and said: " I have to go back to doing what I love! And he did, but died far too young. DARIN REMAINS THE BEST STAGE PERFORMER, ever, IN HIS PRIME!
Great singer & performer. Full of life, unfortunately died young. Even after his death, he's lovingly remembered by many.
Bobby Darin you'll be remembered because of your contributions to the music industry. Singer, songwriter, a superb stage performer & actor. You & Sandra Dee will be forever remembered.

Energetic, absolutely, but this is awful, especially since there is a great version of Bobby doing this song on a video called,"The Darin Invasion" and he took it note for note from Jackie Wilson. Bobby IDOLIZED Jackie Wilson, literally, and saw him often at the Apollo. He even took some of his moves from Jackie, but not the splits or spins...it's too bad there aren't any performances from Jackie's live show of this tune...it would make believers out of anyone...I did Elvis.

decent BUT no 1 can seem to hit the high notes like jackie wilson did...in my opinion if you can't do that you will never do this song justice...simple as!!! jackie wilson...LEGEND...bobby darin was good at what he did but stick to your own songs methinks.
Let me re-iterate how much I love Bobby Darin before I start some flame war. I think he's one of the greatest all-around -entertainers of his era, and a master of phrasing and vocal delivery. He just lets go and flies with such freedom and exuberance, and that's why he's so fascinating to watch. I always thought it was crazy that Roger McGuinn from the Byrds got his start with Bobby... Those must be some interesting stories.
Not Andrea. There's no N or D in his enunciation. Unless it's a flub, which is possible.
There's another one in the beginning where he does that "one in a million" phrasing trick and it sounds like "one in a million sweet little Marymont girl", but on both of these lines he has to speed back up to catch up to the rythm so, its hard to be sure.
Darin had a significant role in fostering new talent. Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson and Wayne Newton opened his nightclub performances when they were virtually unknown. Early on, at the Copacabana, he insisted that black comic George Kirby be his opening act.
Also in 1973 he married Andrea Yeager, so I think it's just dodgy pronounciation. No way was the man who wrote Simple Song Of Freedom racist.
And I agree, one of the greatest, or maybe THE greatest!
I know, its WEIRD right? don't get me wrong, I love Bobby Darin...but there's such thing as going too black, vocally. there are moments that he sounds like Fats Domino with his voice inside out. So he does this total Uncle Tome thing, then sounds Distincly (to me) like he's singing My Sweet Little Ayran Girl.
I can find no evidence of him being racist. but this is SO strange.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm sure there may be some that might not agree with me, but in my opinion, he was the best. Better than Sammy, Elvis, Jackie, and others that follow. He could sing, dance, play any instrument, and emit such love and emotion of music through it all. It's obvious he love music and performing soothed his soul.
Thanx. I don't there is anyone today or since Bobby performed who can come close to being a total package performer/entertainer. And I don't know if he made a lot of money, but I truly believe Bobby Darin did this for the love of it. I'm sure he might've made a lot of money, but no amount of money could "make" anyone be as passionate as he. As one of his interviews said he never records a song without thinking it might not be a hit
I agree, I think if Bobby had more time, he would have been bigger than Elvis. He did get paid a lot- $75,000 a week in 1973, but it his committed attitude showed in 1968-1970 when he just carried one performing his protest songs, despite commercially being unsuccesful.
your damn right, and we his fans hope you and future generations will never forget Bobby !!!!! Music was in his soul and he was in heaven on stage, expressing it !! as you can see !!! Thank you for honoring Bobby to the world......dh
NO one NO ONE AT ALL !!! Can compare or come close to the amount of energy, feeling, soul, and talent that Bobby Darin put into one of his performances. If so called "musicians" today think there hot shit, they need to take a look at this. and I'm only 20 and I'm pretty versatile in my musical selection
I have even heard Bobby sing this song before and its the "lemme hear that tune Billy" that just gets me no matter how many times I hear it. love it. thanks for posting it is appreciated. I think Bobby really liked this song, he always gave every song his best and always did an amazing job because that is who he was but I think he enjoyed this song. It is in my favorites and has been for a while now. He does lift this song to a new level. typical Bobby Darin.
lemme hear that tune Billy, gosh, I just love this, Bobby amazing Darin. Just keep posting those great Darin videos latefor and we will keep watching. Help keep this amazing man's talent and memory alive. thanks for posting.
This is my all time favorite of Bobby's performance of this song. I just love it. It is truly amazing to watch this and know how sick he was here, you would never know it by the performance, he was the ultimate performer.thanks for posting
Whenever I'm down or out of sorts, I just YouTube "Darin Higher and Higher", click on this video, and just smile and watch. This is one of those rare songs that will make you feel good no matter what. I must have watched this vid at least 30-40 times since discovering it last year
Every time I watch the GREAT Bobby Darin on stage***his voice & graceful moves just "blowes my mind" !!! Swing Bobby Swing.......the ultimute performer of all time!!! Not even Elvis was as talented & heavenly--thoe I do respect Elvis`s contribution to the musical industry too!! Bobby & Elvis were casual friends in Vegas !!!!.......but in my opinion, BD is itttttt!!! "RIP" Bobby, Higher & Higher you are and we miss you soooo much......dh
I know you feel the same way as I do about his legacy!! How can you not, when you see performances like this one!!!! I`m sorry world, but I`m just simply hooked....call me crazy & I`m proud of it !!!! Thanks to people like you {latefor} his talent will live forever......dh
You are so right, he was incredible and his timing, everything he attempted was perfect or darn near. It was a very great loss and this is one of my favorite songs he did, I love let me hear that tune Billy. just great
His foot movement is so smooth it looks like the bottoms of his shoes have been oiled. He was such a class act. Miss him every day. thanks for posting.
Bobby didn't just give 200 per cent on this song (which he did it is fabulous)) he gave 200% or more to everything he ever attempted to do he was the ultimate entertainer, a real class act. love this thanks
This is the best live recording of this song. Bobby gives 200%. The voice, the moves, he was the greatest. I have the entire DVD of this show. I heard he leaves the stage to breath some oxygen. Hard to believe he had all those heart problems and still managed to stun the crowd. Never met him, but miss him very much!!
Look at Bobby`s *** HIGH ENERGY MOVES in this last taped performance ***Magnifisent!!! He confessed in one of his Vegas Concerts-- in so many words, that this song truely does take him "Higher & Higher"--such passion--"that was Bobby!!!!" dh
He enjoys it like nobody enjoy their productions!!! According this, he was the best. Because he COULD make his production, not only sing. "Magnifico!"

So he does this total Uncle Tome thing, then sounds Distincly (to me) like he's singing My Sweet Little Ayran Girl.
I can find no evidence of him being racist. but this is SO strange.

ANY singer / entertainer can only aspire to have this much talent. When Bobby and Elvis died, so did entertainers.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm sure there may be some that might not agree with me, but in my opinion, he was the best. Better than Sammy, Elvis, Jackie, and others that follow. He could sing, dance, play any instrument, and emit such love and emotion of music through it all. It's obvious he love music and performing soothed his soul.
dwtslvr 3 years ago 2
Spot on. Elvis idolised him and said that Bobby could do things on stage that he could only dream of doing.
robbdarren 3 years ago 3
As one of his interviews said he never records a song without thinking it might not be a hit
dwtslvr 3 years ago 2
I agree, I think if Bobby had more time, he would have been bigger than Elvis. He did get paid a lot- $75,000 a week in 1973, but it his committed attitude showed in 1968-1970 when he just carried one performing his protest songs, despite commercially being unsuccesful.
Bobby Darin- The unsung hero of popular music!

This is one of his best performances when Bobby Darin sings "Your Love lifted ne Higher"
His dancing is marvellous and he gives it his all. I have yet to see a performer do as much.
He almost seems to be out of breath and yet he
continues to perform. Oh Mr. Darin how we all miss you, thank God we have your videos to see
you. You have certainly left your legacy to
the world. God Bless You.

Bobby didn't just give 200 per cent on this song (which he did it is fabulous)) he gave 200% or more to everything he ever attempted to do he was the ultimate entertainer, a real class act. love this thanks
bdfan50 3 years ago
This is the best live recording of this song. Bobby gives 200%. The voice, the moves, he was the greatest. I have the entire DVD of this show. I heard he leaves the stage to breath some oxygen. Hard to believe he had all those heart problems and still managed to stun the crowd. Never met him, but miss him very much!!
