I love the imperfections in the design it is pure beauty and art. I understan the inventer of this method of construction has passed he left a wonderful work behind and should recieve more praise than I can offer him.
@gotmyfingerrscrowsed They do very good in earthquakes actually. I recently read an article on earthbag homes in Haiti that were completely undamaged after the recent devastating earthquake. Other more poorly constructed homes around them were flattened and they were totally unscathed. An earthbag home that is built right is very safe from just about anything that nature throws at it save perhaps a meteorite. ;-)
If you look for readily available recycled materials it is possible to build the main structures for the cost of sweat on your brow only. Electrical ,plumbing , doors and windows would be your expense if you cant' find a way to get them for free . But anyone should be able to build a house like this for less than 5k.
i think these homes are really wonderful, they all seem to be built in very arid enviroments. i live in ohio, its humid, it rains a fair amount, and the dirt here is wonderful for growing, it has a lot of organic material in it. can anyone point me to an example thats been built in a similar enviroment>? :)
@bearshaman0 A properly constructed earthen home can work in any environment. I am looking into various alternative building techniques like earthbag, cob, strawbale, rammed earth, and the like and plan on building one in the somewhat near future. They all have definite pluses and minuses. Do a simple google search for "green home building" for example and you can find some good info.
@bearshaman0 The principle should be the same. Earth and dirt both absorb a decent amount of rainfall. if you are seriously considering this as a way to build your home, you may want to put a layer of plastic over the sand bags. plants and other foliage also help to absorb rain, and they help to keep your house warm if they are planted on the roof.
the critical thing that holds everything together is simply the dome shape - a simple but extremely powerful piece of geometry lesson. i agree its amazing
what kind of price would you charge to build one dome with four little 'half dome' bedrooms attached ? just as a rough guide - i couldnt afford one for a long time at the moment
The music is De Usuahia a la Quiaca by Gustavo Santaolalla from the movie Motorcycle Diaries. You can download the MP3 album from Amazon for under $10

also the mix is usually 9 parts earth 1 part cement , and is 'rammed ' or 'tamped' very compact so this contributes to the stability aswell .

This wouldnt work in cold climates. the freeze thaw of the ground would heave the walls, unless some sort of footing was poured below the frost line.

I am mad at this guy because it took the idea from the American-Iranian Nader Khalili and doesnt even give him credit .. ):

I don't think he stole it, I thnk he's taking credit for the video. If you notice, they're using Cal-Earth sand bags.
