I have to admit Trek 3 put me off the series. I suppose I watched them when young in the wrong order, I saw the motion picture which I found boring, then 3 which had funny moments but I just kept thinking 'this is so stupid and next generation is so much better'. Never really been a Shatner fan, although you gotta give him props obviously. Picard just seemed more like a real captain to me. Although I agree with Mr Plinkett, in the films he is a murdering psycho!
@BelatedCommiseration I thought 2 and 3 blended well with each other. i thought the 3rd movie brought a serious emotional element to the series...Kirk stealing the enterprise to rescue spocks body, his son was killed by the klingon warrior, and he had to destroy his beloved ship...Kirk was the best captain
@Originaljedi34 I have heard people say wrath of khan is the best one of the original franchise, but I haven't yet seen it. Seriously, after watching star trek 3 I just decided not to bother about the original cast at all and just watched next gen, then deep space nine before becoming a bit disenchanted by enterprise. Voyager was rubbish. I only occasionally saw the odd old trek on T.V. As I have grown older I have learned to appreciate their campyness more so maybe I should revist the films.
@Originaljedi34 Sorry, in last comment meant to say 4 put me off the series, although 3 was the begiining of the let down when they actually found spock, which made no sense.
In my book, Star Trek (TOS films) parts 2, 3 and 6 were the best films of them all. Second best included parts 4, 5 and least favorite was The Motion Picture.
I've never really watched any of the movies and I'm not knowledgeable in StarTrek at all, but I think that scene with the punk and the music in the bus was pretty lame and not funny at all... : P
i have to wholeheartedly disagree about nemesis. id rather eat the rotten asshole of a roadkill targ and wash it down with romulan ale than have to watch that pile of tribble shit again.
Wow. He totally got the plot of IV wrong. But, okay.
The Probe was not in the least bit hostile. The amplitude of it's transmissions was simply too powerful and that's what caused all the destruction. It continued to transmit because it didn't realize that the Humpback whales were extinct.
I'm pretty sure they explained that in the actual movie.
Funny story about the fourth movie. When Sulu and Co. were walking, you see Sulu look inside a window. According to George Takei, there was a dancer (or stripper, sorry, memory is hazy) who showed him her goods.
Okay i dont understand u. U Skip "Insurrection", which is PURE STAR TREK, and instead would watch NEMESIS, which is just stupid...and i started to like u... ;-)
@timberwolf84 It's been a while since I've seen the final frontier, but I really like the Search For Spock. I just forgot about it. I thought Christopher Loyd was awesome as Cmdr. Kruge, and the destruction of the Enterprise and David's death are among some of the most memorable moments in Trek history.
I remember this was the first Star Trek movie I saw as a kid, mostly because of the whales. I even still recall asking my mom "why do they need the whales to talk?" and she just answers: "To save the planet" and nothing else to add to it, like I would automatically understand it....I got up and walked out of the living room.
I remember this was the first Star Trek movie I saw as a kid, mostly because of the whales. I even still recall asking my mom "why do they need the whales to talk?" and she just answers: "Because the planet will be destroyed" and nothing else like I would automatically understand it....I got up and walked out of the living room.
Probably the thing Generations is most infamous for is killing Kirk. Why it's infamous is that a bridge he's standing under collapses on him for no good reason.
1:44-2:00-and that children is why you never flip off a Vulcan....now open to chapter 4 and we will learn why Starfleet Captains have sex with green alien women.....
"Nemesis was another good one." (5:10) I don't even know what to say to that other than I strongly disagree. The villain does a terrible job of pursuing his goals, despite an imminent deadline. His main goal also don't make much sense. And he has an uber ship.
There are 3 numerical rules for which films are good. Rule 1- multiples of 5 are really bad. Rule 2- the even films are the good ones. Rule 3- the odd films are only ok.
These reviews are a really nice way of introducing Star Trek to someone who has never seen it before. I'd just say that James is a little to kind to the TNG movies. To quote AVGN, those movies were horse dump. Sure, First Contact was the best, but it still pretty much sucked .Generations sucked but it looked nice (I wish the TV show used similar lighting instead of the sterile even lighting. At least DS9 got that right.). He was spot on with INS. Nemesis looked the most like a movie, but sucked.
My Ranking from Worst to Best: Final Frontier Insurrection Nemesis Motion Picture Generations The Reboot Search For Spock Voyage Home Undiscovered Country First Contact Wrath of Khan
@DawnHeart15 Nemesis was an awesome movie, entertaining, good effects, though a tad cheesy and some boring scenes, it has some entertaining moments that keep it watchable
@DawnHeart15 why o why do we have so many damn trolls in here, if he liked it thats his opinion. why do people get su excited about things like this? its only a movie!!!
jj abrams should be shot.If you liked the new movie you never liked st to begin with. The only reason hes doing the new one is CASH the same idiots that made fun of people for liking ST years ago think the new one is a kickass action flick.I'm sorry it's a fucking labotomy
They are making another Star Trek movie in 2012! Which I feel is great because star trek 11 had a great new cast that I feel can take on the challenge. Plus j. j. Abrahms is directing again :D
"....and I say SCREW YOU, and I hope you are blue too....." HA!! MOST funniest with that "don't give a shit about society" type of dude on the bus with Kirk and Spock!!
Actually if you watch Next Gen movie reviews my Mr. Plinkett of red letter media you'll quickly find out that although somewhat entertaining the next gen movies are kinda stupid.
Disagree the film's theme is 'lack of communication.' The examples you listed don't demonstrate a 'theme,' but plot devices designed to show the characters' arcs. The real (and obvious) theme here was the lasting effects of short-sightedness. Hunting whales was a metaphor for the unrestrained mining of earth's natural resources & the probe represents the consequences. The probe was made oblivious to the harm it was causing solely because Nimoy didn't want a true villain this time around.
As a throwback to when you said: 'what do they wanna talk about anyway', I'm thinking its like this: Whale: Hey ShitLog. ShitLog:Hey whale...guy Whale:ok, (mumbles) dumbass. ShitLog: Hey! I ain't no... no...no du... du....dumbass, I love you Jenny!!!!!. Whale:Ok than. ShitLog:Wanna know why I am called ShitLog? Whale:Suprise me? ShitLog:Because my dad had sex with a ShitTree. Whale:Thats messed up on so many levels. ShitLog:What'ch you talkin' bout Willis? Whale:Whos Willis? Silence.
@goldengunuser Thats funny because the actor that played 'Doc Brown' In 'Back to the Future' played the villian in 'Star Trek 3:The Search For Spock', which was cool, great villian.
well actually the crew has gone back in time several times before.." Assignment earth" "The city on the edge of forever" and "Tomorrow is yesterday" But never because of a log of shit lol great vid !
They also break a time-line no-no by removing someone who was supposed to have a life in that time era.... and changing how transparent aluminum is made... etc., etc.
The new one isn't a remake, it's a continuation. Spoke keeps living but ends up screwing up time. The movie just shows is the differences between the two universes.
Great review!! You should Definitely do a review of the Many Sliders Series.. I know you had to have watched Sliders!.. If you didn't,, you definitely missed out!!
My "Star Trek' List: 1 sucks 2 is great 3 is good 4 is great 5 is OK 6 is good 7 is my favorite 8 is great 9 is great 10 is good 11 is great Anyone who disagrees is a Communist!!! >:(
One thing I always thought was funny was durring the hospital escape when Checkoff raises his head and Kirk for some reason lowers it saying something weird. I should put the subtitles on during that scene. But it was a good funny scene and a lighter time during two darker movies. And I guess you can't go wrong with a shit log with a disco ball.
The main thing I remember about ST IV is the Mad Magazine spoof, since I used to buy that magazine at the time. It really highlighted the "black sheep" elements of the plot.
They would have revived Data too, if they had been given a chance to make another TNG movie. In fact, what do you think the whole B4 subplot was leading up to? Also, the official canon leading up to the Star Trek MMORPG does confirm that Data eventually recovers his mind in the B4 body.
@EduEnYT I thought that Data himself, Brent Spiner wanted Data killed off at the end because he was getting too old to convincingly play a supposedly ageless android.
I watched Wrath of Khan about a week ago and I just finished Search for Spock. I'm currently in the middle of Voyage home at the moment and so far I love it.
I'd like to continue with these, but I have one question. Should I skip Final Frontier?
I was just scrolling through IMDB and apparently it's supposed to be horrible. I also noticed who directed it. Will it help with the plot of #6 and I should just sit through it? Or should I just skip it.
@xtlhogciao I'd say watch ST: V for the LOLs. It's not a good movie at all, but it does have some funny bits in it (both intentional and unintentional) that make it worth watching at least once---and it's really not quite as horrific a train wreck as many make it out to be. If you want to skip it though, ST: VI has nothing whatsoever to do with ST: V, and it's a grade-A picture that's WELL worth watching.
My top 3 are probably Wrath of Khan, First Contact, Voyage Home in that order. I have yet to see Generations, Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek 5 is the worst. I really wanted to smash my head on something hard to forget all about it. II, III, and IV and without doubt the best. Your videos are really funny by the way. :)
I always thought of the shit log as more of a giant Tootsie Roll with a crusty old Dum Dum stuck to it, but I think I like your fecal reference better.
nice effects, nice jokes (for the most part). the plot was a little confusing but you were able to understand it later in the movie. the action sequences were very nice and there is really a lot going on the screen.
the characters fit the guys from TOS very nice and show a great performance. especially kirk and mccoy. spok looks like a pussy way more than needed, but its not that much of an issue.
and a nice bonus: even non-trek-fans were able to enjoy it!
Was never that much of a fan of TOS (more of a TNG person) but I did like The Voyage Home since it broke the cliche Trek formula of crew vs. villain.
And I LMFAO at the log of shit with the discoball.
ST: First Contact is the best Trek movie hands down as well as the most successful Trek movie (until the new one). Nemesis was not a fitting end to TNG, hell even the cast say that.
This one is personally my favorite movie. I loved 2 and 3, and 2 is the best of the "trilogy". But the death of Spock in 2 and the death of the Enterprise in 3 turned me off when I was a little kid. I understand them now and they are great. But I LOVED 4 as a kid and I still do. It's light hearted and I've always loved Time Travel. It will always be #1 for me, even if 2 is actually the better movie.
To be honest, I hated STIV. It was stupid, and pedantic. Though there is some comedy in it, it really feels odd with the whole thing. The plot is illogical as can possibly be; what could a bunch of whales impart to a society that made such a log of shit with the disco ball. ASS!
WRATH OF KHAN SEARCH FOR SPOCK UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY GENERATIONS FIRST CONTACT THE VOYAGE HOME THE MOTION PICTURE INSURRECTION NEMESIS THE FINAL FRONTIER ...my best to least.
Final Frontier has a Fan Dance.

6, 4, 8, 2, 3, 10, 7, 5, 9, 1.

The main thing I remember about ST IV is the Mad Magazine spoof, since I used to buy that magazine at the time. It really highlighted the "black sheep" elements of the plot.

I hate Nemesis. THEY KILL DATA!!! And they don't resurrect him later as they did with spock. >:-(
EduEnYT 1 year ago
@EduEnYT
They would have revived Data too, if they had been given a chance to make another TNG movie. In fact, what do you think the whole B4 subplot was leading up to? Also, the official canon leading up to the Star Trek MMORPG does confirm that Data eventually recovers his mind in the B4 body.
SchlossRitter 1 year ago
@EduEnYT The guy who played Data himself wanted Data to be destroyed forever
oiramldx 1 year ago
@EduEnYT I thought that Data himself, Brent Spiner wanted Data killed off at the end because he was getting too old to convincingly play a supposedly ageless android.
TMC1982Part2 1 year ago
@TMC1982Part2 That's right. Brent Spiner himself confirmed it in an online article/interview some time ago.

Or should I just skip it.
xtlhogciao 1 year ago
@xtlhogciao Look at it as a regular episode
unless you havent seen the series
oiramldx 1 year ago
@xtlhogciao I'd say watch ST: V for the LOLs. It's not a good movie at all, but it does have some funny bits in it (both intentional and unintentional) that make it worth watching at least once---and it's really not quite as horrific a train wreck as many make it out to be. If you want to skip it though, ST: VI has nothing whatsoever to do with ST: V, and it's a grade-A picture that's WELL worth watching.

Double dumbass on you!
YES!!!!!!!
I love Star Trek! It is SOOOOOOO awesome!

the last ST movie was plain awesome!
nice effects, nice jokes (for the most part). the plot was a little confusing but you were able to understand it later in the movie. the action sequences were very nice and there is really a lot going on the screen.
the characters fit the guys from TOS very nice and show a great performance. especially kirk and mccoy. spok looks like a pussy way more than needed, but its not that much of an issue.
and a nice bonus: even non-trek-fans were able to enjoy it!

Nemesis is a "Good One"?!?!?!
With that line you just destroyed every bit of credibility that your reviews had.
Nemesis was God AWFUL and that is why they had to reboot the entire series.

by you saying its awful ,doesn't make you credible either

Was never that much of a fan of TOS (more of a TNG person) but I did like The Voyage Home since it broke the cliche Trek formula of crew vs. villain.
And I LMFAO at the log of shit with the discoball.
ST: First Contact is the best Trek movie hands down as well as the most successful Trek movie (until the new one). Nemesis was not a fitting end to TNG, hell even the cast say that.
I enjoyed the new film however.

ASS!
