  • thank you so much, the first thing i did was destroying my string :(

  • aaahhh my pin broke while trying to pull the 6th string out!!

  • Thanks for this! T'was really helpful mate! :-)

  • If DR strings are good enough for you then they are good enough for ME.. Thanks.. great video us beginners need all the tips we can get...I never knew about stretching...Just goes to show you that your never too old to learn

  • omg thank you so much man! i used to string my strings like crap on my electric guitar and it would like like a pile of junk in a tangle. :)

  • Thanks that really helped after almost 10 years of playing....my necks not a jumbled pile of strings

  • When changing my strings every few months I still need to watch this video. Unfortunately, my visual thinking is rather bad. That's why I hardly remember after some time. To me, your way doing this is the best as you even wind the fixing knot with the tuning winder at the guitar (no idea how that thing is actually called, even in German, my mother tongue) instead of doing this knot manually. I think this really works better! So, Justin, thank you so much for this lesson!

  • Thanks!

  • Wow! I've been putting strings on wrong for years (at the tuner). Great video!

  • Thanks!!!

  • fuck fuck fuckkkk!!!! i did everything right except the tuning, i stretched it so hart it broke again, now im gonna have to go and buy another pack.

any advice about the getting it in tune ?

  • nice tutorial! and your right index finger nail well taken care^^

  • your nails are dirty

  • @calofsf1 You came here to watch his nails or to learn how to change strings?

  • @calofsf1 yeah, they usually don't get clean while working with an instrument that holds thousands of dead skin cells. if that's a worry of your's i'll bet your no musician

  • Great videos thanks!

  • Im currently changing my strings. Lol!

  • Thank you very much, but I put my last 3 strings in the opposite way lol

  • It was very helpful.

  • On my Yamaha F335, the bridge pins ALWAYS pop out while I'm tightening the string. EVERY FRIGGIN TIME!

  • @GuitarBlues3 , I have the same problem on my guitar, it bad wood on the bridge.

Only ask someone, to press the pin on with his thumb while thightening the sting.

  • THANKS!!!

  • cheers mate massive help been doing it wrong till now,

  • pff i changed the strings before i watch this video and the result is crappy as hell...no i have to play my guitar with protecting gear on ;p

  • thank you so much for this video, I've just did it for the first time in my life to help my boyfriend because he didn't have time to do it himself, and it was a total success :) Now he loves me even more and I think its now time for some nice treatment for me in return :)))

  • so frustrating for me is that the string always seems to want to pop up over the top of the tuning peg.

  • <3

  • i just changed my acoustic guitar strings for the very first time without fail. works perfect. fantastic video, but the whole time watching it i was just like OMGOMGOMGOMG SOMEONE HAS TO CLIP THOSE FINGERNAILS!!!!

  • @elliottsauvage He use them to play, dude. He said that in another vid

  • Wonderful video, thank you! Wouldn't know how to do it without this.

  • Thanks, just changed strings for the first time with pegs. Very helpful. My string jumped out of place when winding. Any tips?

  • Thank You

  • To all guitar beginners: do follow the instructions given in this video. Imo this is the best and easiest way to restring your guitar.

Plus: make sure the set-up of your guitar is o.k. and... in case your finger tips hurt like hell while starting to practice...don't give up !! Try the flexible core strings (FX) especially designed for beginners by Martin. Not the cheapest strings, but they're worth it, great for beginners.

  • Just changed the strings on my new APX500 in less than 20 minutes thanks to your excellent video. Cheers Justin.

  • Just

  • Damn i got a string in my eye and a pin in my mouth!!!!!You sick ba........No i am kidding that was really helpfull thnx a lot :)

  • AAAAAA i got a string in my eye and a pin in my mouth!!!!!You sick ba........No i am kidding that was really helpfull thnx a lot :)

  • I really liked this video. When he was talking about checking the pin, mine popped out in that exact moment.

  • This really is the best.

  • Thanks for the video! I watched several videos before yours and kept having issues. You explained every detail and I really like how you do he over- under routine with the string up by the nut. I really helped!

    Now 5 more to go.

I use Elixir and have been happy with them but I'll give DR a try and see.

  • Justin I just got my first acoustic guitar and it was a gift so it was missing a string...i went and got some at Guitar Center and I said to myself "Justin is ought to have a tutorial on how to change strings..." so here I am and I am now ready to keep on practicing...thank you so much man your videos have helped me improve so much...you are too kind!!! Keep on playing and thanks again Sir!

  • Hehe, I actually figured out how to wind the pegs by myself. And then I was surprised to find that you do it the same way!

  • great my string just came out!...WTF!!!! lol (im not blaming the video btw)

  • Very helpful, thanks!

  • I'm going to try DR strings. Thanks for the video.

  • =( I broke my string. Didn't give enough slack.

  • @thm8lve haha me too now i gotta buy more

  • such a low quality vid. it is difficult to see details.

  • cant change the strings , no metal cutter , well no playing for me .

  • @Bazgann Don't you have a hardware store in your vicinity?!

  • @Philmriss haha now i have those metall cutter but still fail to change it . one of the strings (E) dont have this rounded ending : |

  • Hey, thanks mate... a great tutorial

  • I Love this guy ♥

  • your videos are truly helpful and great.

i was terrified to change my strings myself because i was scared i'd break a pin or worse not do it right and then have my strings snap while i'm playing.

but i think i've got the guts to do it myself now, thanks to your tutorials.

    thanks so much

  • nice one :)

  • When the strings break i actually crap my pants. Even when it doesn't spring in my face, it's like my phobia of guitaring D:

but thanks for the video. Once again, you helped me out :)

  • Thank you very much

  • this was the technique I was looking for! cheers, can I use this way on an electric guitar?

  • @mrtommyhendrix1 yes if it has the same type of head

  • @inhuman96 - :/ i've got a tele, wouldn't it work?

  • @mrtommyhendrix1 no this technique works only for guitars that have 3 tuning pegs each side....a tele has all 6 on the same side... just do the same exact technique except twist it the other way so that the string is on the inside when u twist the peg

  • do we leave the same amount of slack for every string?

  • my g string keeps breaking

  • Another great video! Very informative. Thanks for all the tips.

  • @theamazingsupergirl

D'addario is great, no worries. They're my brand of choice :)

  • @TheDJJerome Cool...thanks for the comment. I put them on my guitar and they completely changed the sound. I have light gauge and now get volume while picking along with a crisp strum. What gauge do you use?

  • Wat kind of guitar is that been looking for the brand?

  • i cant do it :/

  • Thanks Justin. Not just for this video, which helped me a lot, but simply for everything and being such a nice guy.

  • Very Nice!!! :)

  • akward pause at the end 7:14 - 7:16

  • thank you so much, this was entirely helpful :)

  • Thank you very much, mentioned many of the simple parts that many of the other videos forget to include, but ultimately are essential.

  • Nice one Justin, much appreciated

  • thx now i know how to change the strings in a great way

  • OHHHH Now i know how to wind the string on the peg so the winds lock the string in place! Thank you Justin!

  • @W0rkingClassHero i know u got ur profile name from one of John Lennon's albums! :)

  • I didn't know what kind of strings to get so I'll try DR. I hope they have them at Guitar Center.

  • @yoGregg0ry Well, someone else picked up some strings for me. They got D'Addario. I haven't put them on yet. Do you know if they're any good?

  • @theamazingsupergirl no i don't know. sorry

  • When im turning the peg that much im afraid that the snare with snap, Cuz i've been bitch slapped by a string when it snapped lol

  • I've watched about 20 of these guitar string changing videos. This is the best. Thanks

  • Thank you

  • just did my first string change successfully thanks to you i had no idea at first now i feel pretty confident, thanks a bunch!

  • Thanks man!

  • your nails are very long for a guitar player...

  • @xblackxsailsx

They're nothing compared to proper fingerpickers; I've seen players with nails almost a centimetre long from the tip of the finger.

  • nice x)

  • Excellent presentation by a very charming and kind gentleman.

  • that's very nice. thank you ^^

  • Thank you so much! Very helpful!

  • What a cool guy. But I'll add in what he wasn't allowed to say: "DR strings are nice but elixir strings are way better!"

  • @MrPinkZeppelin you have a cool name. Wish I thought of it

  • thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • thank you very much. I have watched a few other vids where you have taught me to play and I just got some strings and my axe sounds great. THank you very much for your time and keep being yourself you ace of a guy!!

  • wow that did nothing... thanks for confusing the heck out of me..

  • does anyone else have trouble changing the e and b string? everytime i put with the peg and start tuning it up.. the strings starts slipping and ball ends up coming up. and then when i want to continue tuning, the string doesn't make a change in sound because the ball won't stay properly in the hole.. help? D: i tried following this video carefully, but im still having this problem.

  • very helpful video, thank you

  • One Happy Camper here! Cheerio!

  • after i change the strings,i try to tone it,and it broke. i was like "shit!"

    why?

  • same thing here....

  • @jackylyn1030 you have to take it slow and work them in. new strings snap very easily

  • Cheers fella - you make it so much easier for us beginners. We cannot learn enough and you feed our hunger for knowledge. Tazzy Devil :)

  • Is the g string the 4th string? Im sorta new

  • @MeTaLiCkMoNsTeR it's 3rd

  • @Zeinishe

Yep, and remember that strings are counted from high(tonewise) to low. So E and B are the 1st and 2nd strings.

  • @oskarpajunen and G is 3rd

  • @MeTaLiCkMoNsTeR

No the G string is the third string. The counting is done FROM the highest pitched string which in normal playing position is the one nearest your feet. The sixth string is then the one nearest your face. It can be confusing for a newbie the string physically lowest is the highest pitched but the lowest numerically. It would have seemed logical to number the strings from the lowest in pitch upwards. (or should that be downwards LOL)

  • thanks man, you're great. i appreciate it

  • this is hard its my first time i dont think i did it right

  • hello there,

My name is Mike i teach guitar on youtube here please drop by my channel subscribe too me so you can get updates of my latest videos.

    Take Care Guitarists

    Mike:)

  • Omg, first time I changed string normaly :D. Thanks m8 that`s helped me a lot :-)

  • i wonder i followed this instruction does it matter how much wind on the nut? when i tuned my guitar all the winding was only 1 wind around the nut instead of serveral D:

  • @ieatconheo its because you didn't leave enough slack whilst winding it , it is cruical to have the strings wrapped around as so they do not some loose!

  • @ieatconheo It isn't necessary to have as many winds on the thicker strings, two is sufficient on the 6th but I normally aim for about 6 on the 1st string. It's also essential you don't have too many winds never more than the tuning peg can reasonably take. Incidentally you don't wind the string round the NUT the NUT is actually the part of the guitar near the headstock, normally bone or plastic, with six slots to space and hold the strings. (Sometimes called the "nut bridge")

  • the old guitar strings make nice weapons especially the low e

  • Hey, I just changed strings on my guitar and since they're new, the guitar is out of tune right away (about a minute after I tune it). I was expecting this, but can anyone tell me how long will it take to...get the guitar used to it? (I don't know how to say it, hopefully you know what I mean) Maybe it's a silly question, sorry, but I'm new to this whole changing strings thing...

  • @TheyCallMeTeri it really shouldnt take long as long as you keep stretching out the string , the more you do that , the more the strings get used to the tension.

  • @TheyCallMeTeri

Regarding the guitar being out of tune soon after you change the strings that's normal, take more notice of the part of video regarding stretching in the strings. Also often overlooked is the need to always tune UP to a note, to put it simply; if the string is too high in pitch slacken down below it then tune UP. The final adjustment in tuning should always be a tightening of the string. Not enough room to explain fully. Hope this helps.

  • I guess, the same principles apply to classical guitar, eh? Never needed to change strings on any guitars, other than my own, electric.

  • This is the best video for changing strings ever. i love it Thank you VERY MUCH!

  • you got a maton guitar eh? tommy emmanuel plays those , they have absolutely great tone . are they very expensive?

  • Does anyone find that they sometimes prick their fingers on the ends of the E and B strings after you cut it? Maybe I just keep cutting it too short..

  • What a lovely guy! Really friendly and easy to watch - you just kinda 'warm' to him! Thanks for posting!

-And I LIKE the extra chat about cats and dogs and glass cleaner etc; that's what makes this so nice and human compared to other 'How To' videos... I wouldn't want a boring robot, thanks!

  • Thanks for that!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Had to rewind a few times but I finally got.

    Thanks Justin !!!

  • i dont know how the fuck your meant to do this, i tried and the string just popped out over the tuner thing

  • Did you say if you change all the strings on a single day the neck will bend? That should be a note on any guitar books. I have 3 books here and never warned me something like that. Man! thanks btw.

  • The only thing you should clean your fretboard with is Dunlop Lemon Oil.

  • wow..... stinks for your cat haha wow

  • i still dont get how to put the string :((

  • I've been playing for 30 + years and used another method, but I like this style. I'll give it a try. Also when loosening the peg if you push the string down into the hole with the peg it tends to loosen the peg enough to get it out easier if you don't have a winder attachment handy. Thanks mate.

  • i used a spoon to pull the pin out

  • @youngreb903 u must be bad ass by now. Iv been playing 4 an year n i suck. But i still like it

  • There is only DR, there is nothing else.

  • thanks man, really helpful. Now I know how to change them properly, with the under and over thingy. Cheers

  • Thanks for the help. I'm just curious about wiping the guitar though. Will it be okay if I just wipe it with a damp towel or something? Does it even matter? Will it make a difference if I don't wipe it, or I wipe it 'wrong'?

  • @biglmac u shouldnt wipe with a damp towel as the water will cause the strings to rust up quicker. use a dry microfibre cloth or some string wipes.

  • Yeah. Unless u let the fretboard dry the strings will rust. I just use a dry cloth usually.

Having dust on the board dulls the sound so its a good idea to clean it,

  • Thanks mate.

  • really helpful mate -never used that over under lock thanks

    steve

  • such a nice guy lol

    poor cat :( haha

  • AWSOME VID HELPED A LOT THANKS MAN

  • You've left some hash under your fingernails. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • OH ya, Finally I did it XD

  • cheers mate

  • Well done. The best tutorial I've seen -- even with a bit of advertising for excellent DR strings.

  • just a thought... does anyone else change all there strings when one snaps?? :S

  • Thanks Justin!!!For help!

  • thanks justin (:

  • thanks. I used it a while back and this vid really helped. trying to do it again but the vid won't load up.

  • ahh thanks alot man!!!!!!!!!

  • so frustrating

  • fucking a i still cant do it, when im winding it at the tuning peg i mess up

  • can you use nail clippers to clip the salck of the string?

but thats the only question really good video :~) thankyou

  • I've used nail clippers out of necessity, but it's not the best tool for the job. Not to mention the fact that it screws up your nail clippers by boring small indents into them after you used them to cut strings.

  • cheers buddy yehh i know what you mean my nail clippers are now ruined! haha and i didnt get the string off anyway ill get the pliers on it now haha

    thankyouuuuuuu

  • thx dude

  • i tried on my own first and strings broke while winding. so i saw this one and tried and it was done perfectly. thank you justine.

  • @W0rkingClassHero i had the same problem just now and broke a string before watching this video

  • @W0rkingClassHero oh sorry i meant one of john lennon's songs. im a de de de

  • Thank you!!

  • "a whole semi tone" :) ... thx for the lesson

  • way too much windings. but except for that it's a good description

  • tVM that helped a bill and i subbed

  • i just broke my strings and im getting new ones sunday so this really help since i have no idea what to do. thanks for the video :)

  • thanks, man this helped a LOT!!

  • and make sure the excess string is coming out the inside side, not the far side"... well what if it IS coming out the far side??! argh

  • For the folks who say the string breaks when they try the stretching bit:

Don't just stretch it. Make sure your left hand is pressing the strings down to the fretboard close to the nut, and at the same time make sure your right elbow is holding the strings down at the bridge end. NOW use your right hand to stretch the string out. This way it shouldn't break, unless you have a dud string.

  • i know how to change strings and i still learned a lot, very thorough. makes me think i could learn something from his lesso
