  • lets see chuck norris do that

  • @bsam20uk Agree about the ladders, unreal. This chimney is a couple of miles away from where I live and it makes me dizzy just looking up at it, never mind climbing the bloody thing.

  • The amazing thing is how he got the ladders up there in the first place, especially on the overhang. See the other videos "laddering a chimney". The first time each ladder is climbed it's partially unsupported so he can put in the attachment further up, that's scary enough but I can't imagine how he could have done that on the overhangs, simply incredible.

  • Im quite young myself, but it's sad to think that the world has changed so much that there will never be another Fred Dibnah around. What a friendly and intelligent man, his had good values and passion around engineering meant that he didn't need Autocues or anything similar.

  • You could ride a bike around hear lol

    Great vid Great man RIP

  • My dad was a steeplejack in Detroit.

  • TOP TOP BLOKE ! GODBLESS FRED, GODBLESS MATE X

  • What a man! Respect, Mr. Dibnah!

  • it makes me feel weird, balls of tungsten tipped steel

  • Makes me feel dizzy just watching him climb the ladders, from the safety of my armchair.

  • this man was a great hero to me, so sad he"s gone now will never see is likes again,r.i.p fred.

  • I have balls but Fred had 22mm solid brass nutts!!!!!!

Just another day at the office.

  • No belay no harness no nothing just climbs the fucking ladder!

  • @happyuk06 And stops on the overhanging bit to admire the brickwork.

  • i was stood at the bottom of india mills chimney today.. its losing hell of alot of brick these days.. all the way up too on the corners.. not good.

  • @alanfromdarwen i should add, from the same area fred had his ladders.. but on all four sides.

  • Fred is the best ! he has got a bottle that I can't understand lol and he is very interesting with it

I could watch him for hours love the dude and miss him RIP Fred

  • you are a no lifer

  • We will never see the like again

  • Pure class

  • That chimney is from my old home town..the video doesnt do its size justice!

  • @chereadnine

Its India mill chimney in Darwen Lancashire isnt it ?.

Had many a night out in Darwen in the early 1990s & sometimes started out in that pub near the base of the chimney

  • Must admit, I'd quite like to try climbing a chimney, but not that one with that overhang!

  • Imagine getting back on that ladder,at the top and at that degree,Fuck that.I would have shit myself.Mr Fred Dibnah, you are a Legend, may you rest in peace....Mark...Cambridgeshire..UK

  • old school love it.

hse would hav you for that now

    kidz wavin too pmsl

  • Fred had more balls than Bolton united on cup final day. Fly that flag Fred from your lofty heights.

  • That wasnt just a flag he was carrying, it was his spare pairs of boxers. What an amazing man he was.

  • I climb this upside down with vaseline on my hands and stilettos on my feet. What's the problem?

  • He would pass for the georgian navy doing that overhang

  • He should of worn a GoPro, would like to have seen his point of view!

  • i remember seeing that flag on india mills chimney

  • UNBELIEVABLE

  • If Fred flew the Union Jack up there today he would get an injunction from the council telling him not to do it again, as the flag could be considered offensive to some!

  • @lec0roh Same in America. Only with the US Flag.

  • @lec0roh no he wouldnt you idiot. Do you believe everything your read in the daily mail?

  • Fred was amazing ,his enthusiasm was and still is contagious ,he followed hes goals and lived life to the full ,a true gent

  • SEEN IT,Amazing, would love to do it for children living in hospices. But the health and safety are well onto it,and unfortunatly brings in the insurance buggers.

  • Fred Dibnah was such a badass. A real-life badass, too, not one of those sissy pretenders like in action films where all the real stunts are done by someone else (stuntman/CGI).

  • That overhang looks terrifying to negotiate. I wonder how Fred laddered it first time?

Great chimney though. As Fred pointed out, how did the builders get those big stones up. You'd have to rig a pretty complex system to move them into place - that's after you'd got them up there.

  • A real inspiration.

  • A RESPECTED former Burnley Express journalist, television producer and playwright has died aged 83.

Mr Don Haworth, who won a BAFTA for his production of Fred Dibnah's television programmes, is also well-known for his popular book "Figures in a Bygone Landscape".

    250107

    He was born in Bacup

  • @kawasaki5187 well pointed out mate,i didnt know don had died.He was a great producer, and he grasped the working class ethic perfectly. We will never see the likes of fred and don ever again

  • @eatmypies Thanks, have you had a look at NorthWest Exploration Forum ? Some lads climbed the chimney the other night using the steeplejacks ladders !

  • Well said Neptune. All the best from Birkenhead

  • just remember, young jack and roger somtimes watch this,so please keep your comments proper

  • 'a 300 footer!' what a legend!

  • It's a good job his ladders can support his massive balls!!

  • @badboymod hahahaha yea as a demolition lad i know what hights are like i have ultimate respect for fred

  • legend !!!!!!

  • This is the Indian Mill in Darwen, Lancashire UK I live there :D

  • @DrTixaR : I live there too and it's called India Mill by the way!

  • @mymine777 Oh well, I call it indian mill :L

  • fred was nothing more or less than a bloke just doing what he loved.....if you know where to look there are many like him, perhaps not in the same game but in other fields engineers for one who can lay there hands and knowledge to any situation required .......if you do not work in one of these environments you will never see what your missing.......see you in the future fred........

  • Fred had so many skills,a proper gent and a person who new his job which he so loved,he was over 50 when he climbed this massive chimney,im 36 and it scares me to death, this guy is what proper trades man made britain great which is now a dying sort.

  • "You could ride a bike 'round here"

He probably would have if he could get one up there

  • this is scarey to watch.

  • To all these three people who don't like the video: What in hell exactly you don't like?

    Xt's sake...

  • I wouldn't do it with a harness for a million quid. He'd not be allowed to do this today with such stringent health and safety, which is kind of sad. He'd be disgusted at the ridiculous payouts that people claim through 'slip and trip' accidents. Shamefull when you watch this. One of the last of a dying breed.

  • bloody scary that well done fred lad

  • why didnt the bbc crew not follow him up the ladder to film him at the top? FAGGOTS

  • @plpra79 Would you have done?

  • What an amazing man he was. Shouldn't be forgotten that Fred himself put those ladders up there. Beggars belief how he did it.

  • Aside from prostate cancer, chimney sweeping is a great job

  • Fred made his own way up to Heaven..ON HIS LADDERS!!

    R.I.P Fred,you are a Hero.

  • Absolutely terrifying.........

    Hats off to you Fred!

  • Make's my stomach go just watching it!!!

  • whats so good about a guy climbing a later... i could do that...

  • @GriffyDelibero knob

  • good man but he was pulling down what the great Victorian and previous builders had made(god knows how many workers died or suffered) in the works - I have been associated with the the building maintenance trade myself and can only imagine. I think we have become a Lousy nation now - We work only to support cadgers ( that includes the British government (Blair/Mandelson and co.)

  • Fred was an amazing guy.

  • legend

  • i have so much respect for him..i work on the demolition ..been up high..but even i wont be comentin on how much a over hang like that was.........fuck sake did fred have fear

  • I can't even watch without feeling scared!

  • That's mad. I winced a number of times at how dangerous this seemed and I KNOW he doesn't fall off!!

    What a guy.

  • This man has alot of guts!! Just watching him my feet get this funny feeling in the bottom LOL!! I could not do that,

  • Amazing Man , I bet he is waving down from the clouds as we speak , but what a building achievement by the people who created it aswell , and to think we were building prefabs years later , great vid

  • I noticed the cameraman didn't go up with him

  • @jjj0mmm

    Well sod off then!

  • What a legend! R.I.P. Fred.. This is what the young of today are missing a great role model and great work ethic sadly missed.. The health and safety wouldn't know what to do with this fella !!

  • all it tokk was one of the runds for the ladder attaching it to the chimney to become rusty and give way and goodbye frederick, upmost respect fred from chelsea. it gives me a nasty feeling in my stomach just watching fred go up these mad chimneys, one false move and down he goes. respect fred.

  • all it tokk was one of the runds for the ladder attaching it to the chimney to become rusty and give way and goodbye frederick, upmost respect fred from chelsea.

  • fred had serious balls man! he would go up a 200ft high wooden ladder with no ropes nothing. hats oiff to fred if i wore a hat. rip man.

  • How did he get over that overhang with such big balls...because obviously he had them..

  • good old Fred. i watched him bring down a chimney in my hometown when I was a kid. i also met him at some point but can't quite pin it down in my mind. he was on a steam roller. he wasn't that impressed with us kids mithering him. laugh.

  • Who put the ladders up?

  • @sirtinycreep he puts them up being a steeplejack was a dangerous buisness he learned unless u build ur own then ho can u trust fully to climb the fuckers.....he must have a nutsaxck the size of a carrier bag full of rocks mate

  • @InstructaMic Mate, I had my stomach in my ass watching that. lol. I'd never do it in a million years!

  • "You could ride a bike round here"

    How about NO.

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OY Dinbar No Bombing!!

  • my ass just chewed a hole in my pants watching that !

  • i tell you what, i'm a scaffolder and if my Boss told me to do some off the things Fred did i'd tell him to stick his job and put my P45 in the post! he has BIG balls for such a little man.

  • Legend : )

  • Admit it how many of your arses were clenched watching this lol

  • @paulallan1000 Mine wasn't clenched....it was unloading large amounts of crap!

  • Dont tell me he did all that just to wave a fucking flag about

  • @irrilius No. He went up to inspect the state of the stonework for maintainace purposes and to take photos of the condition of the stonework.

  • lol its great when he coughs, amazing how he could keep his cool climbing a ladder that high. what a guy, RIP

  • i wouldn't do that for a million quid without a saftey rope.

  • amazing man.

  • Fred had balls, health and safety people dont.

  • What a legend let his traction engines steam on R.I.P

  • he was fukin fit to do that every day asides from being very brave.

  • They just don't make people like that any more. RIP Fred.

  • would this even be allowed today lol you can ride a bike around here

  • only one thing to say: What a man!

  • what a great man not many real men like him today

  • Comment removed

  • Fred was a man who had balls of steel.

Not like the exhibitionalist cretins on the inappropriately named show 'balls of steel' that channel 4 broadcasts. With the exception of the two welshmen I dont think anyone from that show would even dare to climb that chimney.

  • imagine simon cowell and the rest of the x-factor tossers, doing summat like this!

  • how does he get down?

  • @jimbomike1234 thats what i wanna now lol it would be so dodgy getting down where that overhang is he has balls of steel Lol

  • Comment removed

  • @jimbomike1234 ..same way he got up.

  • Makes my arse grip the seat just watching that!

  • i couldnt do that for a million quid

  • I'm a commercial deep sea diver by trade. I've been under 200 feet of ocean sometimes in pretty hairy situations and i've got to say just watching Fred climb that over hang makes me want to soil my pants! Respect to the man. R.I.P. Fred

  • This is the best example of what England is missing today. Real working class heros that can only be admired. Balls of steel and yet as humble as can be. Kindred, greatness for the working class youth to have something to which they can aspire. I'm from Bolton and feel nothing but pride to see this man quietly going about his business with dignity and not one trace of conceitedness. This is what we lost in England when big business decided to de-skill the work force to save a bit of brass!

  • @NeptunesHand

So supremely correct. England is now finished - completely and utterly done. In the next 20 years it will be a banana republic.

  • @NeptunesHand couldn't agree more.

  • @NeptunesHand Well said! Can you picture today's kids with all their false tough attitude saying "I ain't doin' that!" "I don't see why I should"? REAL courage, respect and integrity don't come from posing like a rap singer, but by quietly giving your best, enjoying giving your best, and doing what you can to make sure your best is good enough. Fred Dibnah - a wonderful reminder of better times!

  • @NeptunesHand IT COST ME AND THE WIFE 30 POUND FROM LIVERPOOL TO BOLTON.and 24 pound to spend lovely hours wonderin around freds garden at 121 radclifroad, what an experience ,absolutelty emotional for me.The wife isnt really into fred but even she said its different.

  • @NeptunesHand

You had a good point until you blamed everything on big business, you worthless liberal. The problem is everyone sucking off the government teet.

  • @DaBabyEater In fact I agree with you (about the the problem being everyone sucking off the government teet, not about my being worthless or being a liberal for that matter). Thing is mate, I find myself wondering if people would be so eager to get on the scratch if they still had skilled trades they could take pride in. The type of jobs working men did before they had to do mindless repetitive nonsense that could be done by a well trained monkey.

  • @NeptunesHand It's all part of the agenda. De-industrialise the west and move it East. Give the west a service economy. I was in Detroit a few weeks ago and it's saddening to think that most of the industry that went on there is now in China. That's globalism for you.

  • Top man

  • my hands are sweating just watching this...

  • The man was a bloody genius , simple as that.

His old house was opened yesterday (15th June 2010) as a Heritage Centre dedicated to him. Going to visit ASAP, hope you all do if you can cos it will be interesting.

. RIP Fred, you are a Legend

  • R.I.P. Fred, he truly loved Britain.

  • whats the name of the chimneyu

  • @09hudsond India mill.

  • "you could ride a bike around here" Any takers for that challenge?

  • my arse was gripping the seat the whole time i was watching this

  • Comment removed

  • rawl-bolts, the secret.

  • must be one of the first x-factor lot on telly. A different talent, not much seen these days, like good telly.

  • its a shaymen now you dont see people like fred on tv now to much in ya face i wont ya money etc kind of people on tv

  • Legend in his field , scares me just watching this .

  • my hero true british legend

  • Im watching this in horrified fascination - I couldn't do what this guy is doing even though my life depended on it. I actually feel sick!

  • what make me laugh is he walks up those ladders like i walk upstairs, with no fear and calm as you like...he probably whistles or hums a tune on the way up :)

Fred once knocked down a tower of 2p's built like a chimney for charity once, the charity event was being held in a pub at the time...lol

    good ole fred!!

  • You wouldn't get me on that overhang for a gold pig.

  • Dibnah? Fucking legend.

  • Dibnah is fearless.

  • That's one splendid chimney.

  • Comment removed

  • your saying climbing a mountain is pointless?

  • Absolute respect to that man,how could he climb these ladders, health and safety today would have a fit. he had some balls to go up there.

  • Fred Dibnah: The greatest Britain.

  • "little jack there.. i think it would be rather foolish for him to attempt this sort of thing"

and that is why i love this ha

  • Mountaineers and explorers do it for their own ends and ego trips, nobody forces them to do it, there is no bravery in that,Here is Fred who did it for a living out of necessity,he could knock them all into a cocked hat!!!

  • surely the fact that he was required to climb chimneys to earn a living makes his task less brave than those who choose to scale high buildings or mountains for the hell of it.

dibnah wasn' t facing a fear, he was earning a living, so his motivation was clear...climb the chimney or lose his job. clearly, he didn't naturally fear heights & had no real fears to overcome.

dibnah CHOSE to climb chimneys to earn his living. Had he feared heights, he would've chosen a different career.

  • @TheLongdaysdying1 What a load of tripe. Fred was self employed. What about professional climbers and explorers, are their achievements less valid than those of amateurs? Fred had no fear? Rubbish. It was controlled fear which kept him alive. The fearless are careless and often reckless and end up dead. In this vid he says that some chimneys give him an uneasy feeling. That feeling is fear. Like he said, you only make one mistake up there.

  • Fred Dibnah, unequalled in,application determination, enthusiasm, calculation and common sense,he was simply brilliant, a hard working man and highly intelligent,i cannot think of any body like him today who could even come close !

  • i bet the words "risk assessment" featured in fred's work

  • amazing bloke!

  • He had some balls i lived round the corner from fred.

  • You would think with a chimney that big in crss section that they would have built an inside staircase that went to the balconies and the top,so as to affect repairs and inspection when required, its a vast chimney and it seems stupid that they didnt! You wouldnt get me going up it,not with those overhangs!

  • Imagine your thoses health and safety execs watching the vid of dibnah they must be shitting there pants lol

  • ha ha manyhighills me 2 i adored this man when i was 8 im 47 now. him and the late jack hargreaves gave us a sense of i dont know ,but pride good point you made tho

  • I used to live down the road from this man, I met him when i was a household cavalry man when he collected his MBE in buck palace he was stumped when i said we met before in the palace and he even looked me in the eyeat the time and didnt realise it ( incidentlly i wasnt allowed to move or speak to him at the time ,bummer)

  • Utter modesty and nerves of steel. You can't beat that combination. Fred was great.

  • Heroic effort.

  • God what a man!! The thing is, as awe-inspiring it is to see him climb over those overhangs, he has to do it the other way too - imagine how it would feel to put your foot out on the very top!! There's not many people of Freds calibre.
