  • I guess this is somewhat of a creative approach to guitar. Unfortunately its not listenable ,so who cares? Its interesting for about 5 seconds beyond that it just becomes self indulgent.

Listen to Jeff Parker on Vandermark's powerhouse sound, its creative AND its listenable.

  • Искусство.

  • I don't get what the balloon is doing...maybe I just can't hear it through the recording

  • i guess he's having fun, but I wouldn't want to have to pay to hear this...

  • thanks x

  • has anyone got the guitar tab for this? : )

  • @StrongHeartLives What? You can't learn this by ear?

  • THIS IS ART

  • @betweenthelinesofage THIS IS CRAP

  • @earthless1990 HAHA THATS WHAT I MEANT. INTERNET HIGH FIVE.

  • @betweenthelinesofage c'mon you can easily call art every kid who play random crap using toys

  • @earthless1990 HAHA FAGGOT YOU DONT GET IT. FUCK YOURSELF.

  • @betweenthelinesofage HAHA I DON'T GET IT BECAUSE LOVING THIS IS TO CALL YOURSELF A FAGGOT. FUCK YOU!

  • this is where music meets art and noise and its the intersection with on it written abnormal is the norm and .............

  • I guess you can practice your scales all day like Ribot, or you can actually learn to play your instrument, like Kenny G and Esteban and play from the soul, not from the index of a book, like this bebopper Ribot.

  • @snoopyflick are you being serious? esteban and kenny g both can play well but i wouldnt say they push music in any certain direction and i sure as hell have heard all their shit before played way better with more heart and soul, but pushing music in a new direction is out of the question if your putting those guys on the top of your "soul chart". ever heard of john cage? its all just noise right? pshhh you guys crack me up what are you watching him for if its beyond your comprehension?

  • Did someone state that this was musique concrete? Nope, scratching on a balloon live does not quality, get better sources. Technically this is known as squeak-fart music.

badmuddy, I was playing the clubs then too with a Theoretical Girls offshoot. also a bunch of assholes.

dancoleman2 is my yahoo addy if you want to trade Tier 3 stories!

  • Ribot is a Master. This is some very out, conceptual work which is only a tiny part of what he does during his artistic life.

It is not for everyone, I think that's clear. But just because you don't get it, does not mean it ain't hip.

  • Retard......ed.

Guy plays guitar good, but this "song" is fucking stupid.

Somone needs to break the news to him, because its only gonna be worse when he eventualy realises that licking a fucking balloon is RACKET, not music.

Tree huggin, crystal gripping, bullshit. this work is a combination of LSD and new wave punk funk 3 year old child holding daddys guitar while hes in the pisser.

    New wave,lol... a turd is a turd.

  • Ribot's work is just a combination of jazz-punk-funk styles from the Frith / Laswell / Zorn squeak-fart music era. And Zorn, Laswell, Frith and others were just copying the no-wave-punk-funk sound of 78-80 because they weren't IN it to begin with.

If you were there for that no-wave period in NYC, Marc Ribot is dated, otherwise I am sure he sounds very fresh..

  • @dancoleman2 you read my mind. i was one of the players he "borrowed" from back in the early 80's, when he was in the lizards. nels cline is another "innovator" riding on the backs of those who did this 30-35 years ago. look, we all have influences, but if you're not clever enough to bring YOUR OWN version of them, & over 30 bloody years later, please, stop wasting space. neither of these 2 guys has recognizable voice you could pin down blindfolded...

  • Ok, Ok, Everyone just calm down. We've all heard Marc Ribot actually PLAY the guitar and we all know that he really is VERY good. But sometimes as an artist you just go fucking crazy. It happens, look at Van Gogh. He chopped of his ear. ART.

  • Call me old fashioned but this is mindless crap.

  • there is nothing wrong with being experimental and trying to do something new, but this is just silly

  • yeah...this is pretty much just a waste of time. how can this guy get gigs doing shit like this, but hard working musicians have to struggle to make a living?

  • @jw89

You clearly know nothing about this guy because it doesn't represent his serious work at all.

  • wow. I hope no one payed good money to watch this guy dick around.

  • oh my god i have never heard anything quite so fascinat(crap)

  • Listen to some of the rest of his output - Marc Ribot is no charlatan. And yes, having taken a couple classes on Musique Concrete in school, I can tell you, that's what he's doing. If this was all he could do on guitar it'd be a little sad, but it's not. Marc Robot is a freakin' genius on guitar.

  • What the Fuck?????????!?!?!

  • Marc Ribot has made great music but this is shit.I find the people who applauded this insane.

  • ok?

  • You're shittin' me. Right?

    The guy's a charlatan.

  • You may like or dislike what he is doing, but how does that make him a charlatan??

  • A charlatan, according to Dictionary, is "a person who pretends to more knowledge or skill than he or she possesses " . The musical performance on this video reminds me of the visual artist who presents an entire exhibit of white canvases. Some viewers are taken in by how "daring" and "artsy" this is; while others see it for what it is - an attempt to snow people with facade that disguises actual lack of creativity. The term, charlatan, seems to me to apply quite appropriately to both.

  • or he could simply be a student of le music concrete'

noise for the sake of noise is just as good as chords for the sake of chords.

how many blues/jazz chords can he string together before it gets boring?

there is a difference between sound art and music.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn like Woody Allen said if someone went on stage at Carnegie Hall & took a shit there will always be people that think that it is art.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn If you would actually do some more research on Mr. Ribot you would see that he has had quite a successful career. Most notably with Tom Waits and more recently...Robert Plant/Allison Krauss. Of course by not even knowing who the "artist is who presents an entire exhibit of white canvases" you exemplify the very word of Charlatan. The artist you're probably referring to is Ad Reinhardt. You should look him up someday. Until then stop trying to define music in your own obtuse way.

  • @PwShelton

Fact is I've heard Ribot play live. The rhythm section he played with that evening was actually great. Ribot's tone grated. He was ostensibly playing "jazz" but not really 'making the changes'. I bought McCoy Tyner's 2009 guitar album. Anyone who plays with McCoy, I figure, must have something going for him. But what a disappointment. Besides, when commenting on a single piece, how much homework must one do?

Say, I've got some white canvases I can sell u. Interested?

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Implying that someone is a charlatan without regards to their oeuvre is ridiculous. Maybe you should have just clarified that you don't like him as an artist. This performance doesn't represent his brilliance as a guitarist in any way and when taken out of context it can seem just plain bad. In other words, try to put things into context and perspective. Say, I've got a book on art history for sale, interested?

  • @PwShelton

Again I ask, how much research into an artist's "oeuvre" is required to make a comment on a particular performance? (If you dislike a novel, do you go out and read more by that author?)

You think the guy is brilliant. I suggest that that is what is really ridiculous. And if you think his playing is so remarkable, it is you that needs to do the research. We live in a world and age of hundreds, nay thousands, of truly brilliant guitar players.

I can write you a list. Interested?

  • it's amazing!!

a guy in our ward plays as good as Mark

  • 1:55... crazy good to hit those notes

  • I love the music this man has made but what the hell just happend?

  • awesomeness happened.

  • I'm really trying... really, really trying.

  • i love his work with tom waits...

  • I first saw a UK guitarist called Derek Bailey do this type of eccentric thing back in 1969. He was with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble. Takes abit of getting used to but i realise that even avant garde stuff is acceptable. Ribot is a gifted musician underneath it all.

  • I like this, its this sort of spirit that keeps the guitar alive - a person with the will and guts to do something different. I love Marc Ribot's playing and I know that he is not limited to this, he can play circles around most people; he has exhausted, probably a long time ago, playing things like power chords and scales and harmony, after 20 or 30 years on the thing in a post modern world what the hell are you supposed to do?

  • not trying to come out as an ignorant ass but i truly don't get the greatness of this, maybe my ears have been too damaged from listening to crappy pop comercial music :(

  • What a jerkass.

  • Was that balloon plugged into a Vibro King?

Cool...Maynard G. Krebs got nuthin on Marc in this one...

  • Last time I checked this sounded awesome and wasn't even hard to get. Everyone in this comment section needs to chill.

  • eso fue una fucking mierda.

  • pointless

  • he should work with loops to make it more accessible. i like his work with naked city, but this seems pointless at times. anyway, thx for uploading.

  • I don't think he was in Naked City.

  • evilcowboy! the only music you know seems to come from other bands, you metal, metalica playing un interesthing shit!

  • Evilcowboy. You can't tell me that playing Unforgiven III! a song you didn't write makes you any better of a guitar player. I will admit I am not a cop of anything, and my opinion might mean crap, but look up some history on who Mark Ribot is and what he does, and then you will learn to appreciate it for what it is. Now go back to your basement and keep recording your self playing other people's songs! If you have anytime after jacking off to Metalica.

  • Right. I take it all back this guy is better than Andrea Segovia, Niccolò Paganini, John Williams, and even Bach. Give me a fuckin break. Besides your the one getting all tore up because I insulted a retard with a balloon. What is he to you? The reason you live and breathe apparently. Who give a shit if I like some heavy metal doesn't mean I don't culture myself with other music. I also did a few things by other artist not just Metallica so way to fail at looking at the whole fucking page.

  • Oh yeah and another thing. Who the fuck are you to comment on anything to do with music Mr. I don't have ANY videos because I'm afraid someone will hurt my feelings by saying something mean. So stop crying over someone being mean to your hero. I mean really what would make you whine like a 2 year old about me insulting this guy. Hopefully you just stop all the fucking crying. Crybaby.

  • I play in a band, which is a bit more original than posting videos of me playing other people's songs on you tube. The fact that I got you going, says a lot about how much you can take. Fuck you and your your tone deaf tone you stupid piece of you tube shit. Now come up with your own material and post it. Not another bands songs....broke back cowboy!

  • whaaaaaaaa cry some more. Too bad you ain't got some vids of you and your shit band playing gay punk songs. wow never seen such a little girl crying in a long time. Daddy give you a poke in the stink hole too much? Two words.......Daddy Noooooooo!! So go cry to someone who gives a shit. I'm done with your gay homo ass. I'll just delete the messages from my inbox and not read the shit. So I got last word nigger.

  • Ribot's nod (ala the balloon action) to tasmanian guitarist Greg Kingston

  • he's a genius!
