This scene is acutally a teaching from the Old Testament. I've read, in my religion class, that if you look directly into God's true form, you will/ your head will explode, literally. EX: Exodus 3; When God speaks to Moses in the Burning Bush, after he says, "I am who am/that I am." Moses immediately covers his face because of the teachings he learned about God. (Just clarifying for those who don't know.)

@FishfilmsInc OK, when i saw this scene as a kid, i used to have nightmare's of this scene where everyone gets obliverated by the power of the ark. when thot's head melts was very graphic, and belloq's head exploding, even though they tried to cover that up with the wall of flame, the chunks of bloody skin resenating from the body is still VERY GRAPHICALLY VISIBLE. this is the ONE scene that really could have pushed the film to an "R rating"..
