This solo was originally written for a French tuba. The closest equivalent is a euphonium which is why it is often played on euphonium. While his playing is impressive, it is not meant for something that large.
Excellent job - While many Euphonium players end up getting the job the song is better suited for the tone quality of the Tuba. Bydlo describes a lumbering ox-cart with huge wooden wheels sloshing through muddy country roads. The timbre and resonance of the tuba does justice to this piece. Very well done.
This is very difficult to play on a "Monster" tuba that is so common-place now; Ravel wrote this solo for a small 6-valved C tuba used in French (and perhaps also Belgian) orchestras prior to WWII. A euphonium is about as "authentic" as one can get now. Hopefully one day, there will be a push for tubists to play pre-WWII French orchestral music on the instrument for which the parts were intended. These huge CC/BBb horns aren't always the most appropriate instruments in every situation.
I practiced this solo for months... before I lost it to the Euphonium player. The high G# was just too much for my new braces. I was only hitting it like 1/5 of the time. However, I have heard that the higher range is much easier on the F-tuba. (Which is what he is using)
What model tuba is that. It sounds like a rotary F but is piston! I love the sound of my miraphone 180.....dude what horn is that I ant tell from the side
That was absolutely *the* best I have ever heard that played. Wow... Your pitch is perfect -- razor accurate. Your immediacy of sound and tone is amazing! Those G#s ring full and round. Just wow!! Nice goin'!
Beautiful playing

Believe it or not, the horn he's playing is a YFB-822 F tuba. Normally the big yamaha is kinda bland sounding, but he makes it sing
