Why did Bothwell cross himself when he was a Protestant? Mary and Bothwell were finally married at 4am on May 15th 1567 in the old Chapel at Holyrood by the Calvinist Rites conducted by Adam Bothwell (Calvinist Bishop of Orkney,( this was not long before even Calvinist Bishops were disposed)) and the Reverend John Craig (Minister of High Kirk of St. Giles, (John Knox's successor)), with only a few witnesses, namely the Scottish Chancellor James Stuart (Head of Government) and very few others.
