Maestro Thomas is showing and teaching us how to listen to the symphony in the eyes and through the eyes of the people during his times of when the sysmphony was written.
Man, I didn't know about the reference to Russian liturgical music. Considering religion was officially banned, that's a pretty gutsy move. Balls of steel, that man had.
The narrator, Michael Tilson Thomas, is, I think, one of the great conductors of our time. I think that most, when seeing him conduct the San Francisco Symphony, may not know this. He has an insightful understanding of a piece like this Shostakovich work that we don't understand ourselves.
this is amazing.
I love shostakovich, and the commentary is fantastic.
I just played this piece at my camp, and we were given a brief history of the piece, but nothing that in depth
