What's pretty cool is seeing how their different styles mesh or don't mesh w/the rest of the band. Some work (Erskine, Blackwell) beautifully, others (Bozzio, Peart) not so much. But it's still pretty cool to discern the connections from the non-connections. Erskine's touch is fantastic on the kit. As much as I adored Peart when I was young, it's quite visible that this sort of music isn't really in his blood. Nor is it in Bozzio's...rock guys are rock guys at heart. Doesn't mean they suck.

As the bassist with most of these guys, it's funny to hear the opinions (especially the disses) of who's good and who's bad, among all these guys (Erskine, Bozzio, Igoe, Nick Rich, Chad, Blackwell, etc., even Peart). True, Buddy would have all of our hides for attempting this music, but all were hand-picked by the best rep he's got, daughter Cathy Rich, to represent. Having said that, each drummer "brought it" in their own personal way. Vive la difference!! It was a blast......groove on!

Peter Erskine is the only one in this preview, who plays this music with class and style and a true sense for the heritage of that sound...and he gets the shortest spot...mmh...does this say something about where the taste for drumming is going?...higher...faster...and down the tubes?...and I am not saying, that the others are no good drummers...they all are in their own right, but should not the music be in the spotlight, not "sports on the instrument" ?...oh well...just my 2 cents

Yeah man! His band is incredible at Birdland. But for those who can't make it there, I highly recommend this DVD (and the Birdland Big Band DVD too). He really killed it this night at the BR show. I couldn't believe they did Little Trane. One of my fav BR charts. Tommy was all over those breaks. His confidence and precision were awesome.

I own this DVD. Tommy Igoe takes everyone to school. Steals the show. Unbelievable performance on so many levels.

Blackwell played some cool stuff, but too much twirling! Okay, we get it- you can twirl- it was cool the first 3000 times.

Peart and Bozzio can't go anywhere near a swung eighth note. It's so bad it hurts to watch and listen to. Yikes.

Erskine was swinging as usual, but I wish he'd get more passionate about his drumming like he did in the 70's and 80's. I miss that.

It was a celebration of drummers and of one perticular drummer (Buddy Rich).Your comments are at best missleading.I can tell just by watching this video that all these drummers have there own individual style.Tommy is a brilliant drummer but he is simply in his element.I fail to beleive that any of these drummers gave a poor performance.
