i love how he puts his lips on the guitar at 00:47 ,im a guitarist and i just noticed that i do that,to me i think its just comfortable, to john i think its a subconscious kiss
Aaaah just beautiful, John at his finest.. He has never ceased to amaze me with his musical skills.. What I love about this video, apart from the obvious, is the way he's in an utter trance and you can see him coming out of it at the end of the song... he opens his eyes and looks like he's thinking 'wha the feck am I doin here?!...' R.I.P John.. <3 Legend.
@Lilmisstory a trance is the best way to describe it,perfect comment. im playng 20 years and i know i will never get near him for skill,he was one of the most naturally gifted musicians of our time, the fact that his voice is so perfect is a happy accident
Someone posted that there was nothing on YouTube of John Martyn untill he died. That is how sad the music industry has become. John would have just made an earthy Joke about it....."Now i'm dead and now i'm famous...stupid fuckers.!"
John had a hard as nails exterior...but his soul was so tender and soft. I miss the big guys soul.
@Kristopful there was stuff up fella, but none of the rockplaza stuff, which is his best gig you can get on DVD. though i find it easy to buy his albums now he's dead i was abit at pains to give him money when he was alive, been a wife beater and all...
Some soft acid, acrylic paints and cardboard at my old house with my ex-wife, and she pulls this out. Damn near killed me. I love love love this man and his music. And I thank you Ally for sharing a part of you with me once again.
only just heard this song for the 1st time! what a treat! i know i'm a long way behind the times with this but i think he's tuned Bb F Bb Bb F C? could be wrong they seem to be the open notes when he tunes at the beginning? amazing song either way!
shit,i'm sixteen years old...all my friends and same-age listen to elettronic shit or metal or rap.....and i can't understand how can they stay without this songs.
ok my dad was his best friend and im not lieing here hes the funnyest man my dad ever meat once he had my dad lying in a gutting fucking laughing his head off. when my dad found out that he died he was fucking devastated so was i cuz my dad was and im 11...
Man.... I love this guy, what a shame it is that he passed. I try cycling through other guitar based music; folk/blues/rock and i see fantastic guitarists such as John Mayer who are undeniably good. But still i come back to John and he amazes me every time. 'Go'bless im' R.I.P Johnny Boy x
That voice!! "How do you get to sing like that?" Some Muse of the highest order pierces your heart and makes it impossible for you to do otherwise (-:
Thanks for the reply Mertz .. and thanks again for the post {including the brilliant end bit}. One night when I'm feeling brave this week i'll have a crack at the tuning - but I'll have to sing it an octave {or maybe even two] down.
RIP.Can't believe you're gone, you genius. What a voice. Thank you Mertz 123- yes please post more. Can any technically minded people work out how many different mikes and pick-ups he had on that acoustic? Oh and what the tuning might be?..... Oh and one last thing, how do you get to sing like that!!
well it looks like he has just the one electric guitar pickup. sounds like he has more than that. it may be bleeding into the vocal mic as the vocal mic seems quite sensitive.
the tuning is CFCCGD (enjoy coming back up to standard haha)
You've gotta love that stern German accent demanding "SOLID AIR", lol.
There's an audience recording availbale on Itunes of a gig in Nottingham where a drunkard in the crowd keeps on screaming for "May You Neveeaah!" with increasing levels of hysteria throughout the show. Quite funny, but it must have got a bit annoying for John when he had some many other great songs.
I recently heard an old interview of him on YouTube which said he put all of himself into his music which left little or nothing for this wife Beverly. Hearing this song - I get it!
Brilliant! Thanks for this clip. John at his best-voice coming right from his balls upwards and his inimitable & unique guitar technique. The bit at the end-characteristic of John, taking the mickey out of the electric guitar hero image of the time. I think he was genuinely of 2 minds around this time in his life-wanting to go 'electric+band', but having a distaste for what usually passed as a 'band' around that time.
Thats why that last funny bit on the clip is interesting also-to me anyway.
he appears to be in Bb Eb Bb Bb F C here in case anyone else was confused. Maybe he found it easier to sing it slightly lower live. I know I do!
